Does anybody have any particular Vanilla Q3 favorites when it comes to playing Gen with no map packs?  Which ones work and which ones bomb?

Personally, I think Q3DM8 and Q3DM10 are 2 of the best. Just stay the **** away from the tourney maps!!

Grim Dungeons might be good. The Dredwerkz is good for camping.

There are only two changes to the map, but they both really add to the overall mood and flow of the level in my opinion.  The first is a graphical change.  The Dreamcast version has a skybox depicting some area in space.  What makes it contribute to the mood so well is that the skybox rotates about the level.  I'm not sure how Raster pulled this off, but it was quite a cool effect.  The second change is that of the elimination of falling to your death.  Instead when you fall a certain amount of distance, you're shot through a portal similiar to that featured in the Team Arena map Vortex Portal and thrown right back onto the map.  That makes the level a hell of a lot more frenzied that what it is currently.

I'm pleased someone asked that. I didn't know and was too lazy to ask. (really)
I had the feeling it was like telejano or something.
You live and learn, unles you're a zombie. then you just learn. Slipgate - Laugh

I like q3dm18 myself, and the fragtown 30 map (play it the most, but wish the lighting was a little more moody etc evening time maybe)

Ever tried to play Q3DM1 in team deadmatch with Gen? It's pure carnage!!!! I recommend it because if you fill up that map with bots...well...it's total carnage and the only thing that you can see is:

GIB
GIB
GIB
GIB

Napalm Launcher is my fav weapon in that map. Imagine...12 bots in the same place and all of them dying at the same time...

I must be one of the few people who actually likes Q3DM1.  I hear constant groans about the map, how it sucks, etc, but in a small Gen FFA it can be a blast to play.  I recently played as Strogg there with two other regulars and managed to double everyone else's score.  As Strogg goes that's not bad for having only a rocket launcher, hyperblaster, and super-shotgun.  It was a fast-paced game with a lot of conundrum around the rocket launcher, and very fun.

As a simple short & sweet introduction to Quake 3 1on1, Q3DM1 is decent. As anything else, I have to say I'm one of those who says it sucks, too. Mainly because playing VQ3 in a 15 player FFA is so terribly obnoxiously repetitive. Not comparable to Gen and smaller games, admittedly, but it's set a trend for me ;]
