Title: Odd problem in Gen...
Post by: o'dium on 2005-02-08, 14:23
I dont know why, but i cant seem to get 32bit colour...? Everything i try wont work, at all? The menu says 32bit and everything, but still no go. Quake 3 appears fine in 32bit colour, just genarea doesn't...? Everything else works fine in 32bit as well, apart from gen

Specs:
GeForce 6800 2256meg GT with latest nvidia drivers
3200 64bit AMD Athlon CPU
1gig DDR Ram
Windows XP SP2
etc

Could it be caused by a game profile not kicking in? If for some odd reason Generations (on launch) isn't detected as 'Quake3' for Nvidia's profiles, it might be that another profile limiting color depth is enabled. This sounds like a stretch to me, but it's the only thing I can think of a.t.m.

I'd probably suggest grabbing your autoexec and q3config.cfg files; move them elsewhere temporarily, and see what that does. If you're still running 16-bit, you might want to make sure it's not carrying over your desktop settings.

I'm a tad confused.  If the system screen says you're running in 32 bit color, how do you know that you're not?

You can actually see it. I know I did when setting r_displayrefresh caused my monitor to switch to a 16 bit mode, while my settings still were set to 32 bits.

Hmm... sounds like there's some kind of hidden graphics setting that's causing an issue then, though I'm not sure what.  I'd recommend making a backup copy of your q3config.cfg in your Generations folder, copying the one from your baseq3 folder over, and trying to run Gen.  If it fixes the problem then I'd compare the files for a variable difference.  I had to do this to figure out why rocket explosion lights were going funky on me and why I was getting z fighting once.

I'll try all above. But it easy very easy to see the banding on 16bit vs 32bit images ;)
