Title: Promotional Video (Not yet, but it will be done)
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-06, 00:47
Hey loyal forum-readers, I'm going to do something cool, and I need you.

'What on Earth for', I hear you think - well, here's why: I'm going to make an movie (avi) to promote generations. I'm not sure if I want it done or even 'recorded' before 1.0 and it's art is fully developed, but at the very least I want to do some test runs.

I'm using FRAPS so I can get pretty much any demo going and take bits and pieces that look particularly cool. For a couple of minutes, I'll probably use demo stuff that's in the .99f demo thread, but I don't want too much First Person Action, if you catch my drift. I can do some fun stuff with cg_thirdperson, but unless there's some cool tool I'm unaware of, I fear keygenning is sort of out of the question (Please correct me if I'm wrong here, it would be very cool to be able to simply manipulate demos that we have so far, since that would look so much better than free floating stuff)
We have one or two acceptable free floating demos, in which a few moments could be cut out to present nice Generations action going on, but far too little is available.

Therefore, I'm asking all of you two things:

1.
I'm sure someone remembers the old, huge .99e Doom only night. I have no demos of this, and specifically, I have no free floating demos of this. If anyone somehow miraculously has some free floating spectator demos of those games on his disk, I'd be much obliged to receive them: wonderful fragging material for movie-making!

2.
I'm going to try and throw a very intense and chaotic FFA game, to get some spectacular Generations footage. I want a lot of specific shite for this:

* I want it done on the Euro server
(smoothest settings for demoing, can't have people teleporting about in a vid),
* I want the server loaded, right up to the maximum (we might even have to up that for one game),
* I want it to be on Simply Dead and possibly some other big arena style map that's representative of the Generations Principle: old school classics.
* I want no chatting during the game,
* I want it to last at least 20 minutes,
* I want people to use smooth settings (rate of 20k or up, cl_maxpackets 125) and no exceptions to this,
* I want everyone to go Random Class only,
* I want peope to go absolutely WILD using all the possible weapons available, using rocketjumps, taunting, using the LSOV and causing the biggest chaos ever.
* I want Arena/Strogg players (randomly selected!) to avoid picking up the medkit, because Beserker > Medikit,
* I want one other server attendee (besides myself)  to record a full demo of the entire game from a static angle and position and send it to me.
* Edit: I want to see a very varied selection of models, so before we begin we'll have to get everyone to select some fun skins and models for every class. However, Orbb will not be tolerated.

A good time for this sounds like Saturday, perhaps in between the normal forum games (say, around midnight C.E.T.). The score won't be interesting, but carnage will - if you can blast 20 people at once with a BFG shot: wonderful, if you can punch the living daylights out of everyone with beserker: even better!
People with very choppy connections are somewhat discouraged  -  but everyone is welcome!

Edit: midnight CET == 23:00 GMT == 6 PM EST!

Post here if you're up for it, and let me know whether Saturday 05/07 or Saturday 05/14 at midnight CET sounds good (and which). Suggestions welcomed.

Wow... that would be awesome. I'm free every weekend, so I can help out there. I love taunting (especially Anaki's 'I Rule!'), but I also type from time to time.. either to taunt, or gripe. I'll have to unbind my 't' key for that, so remind me! :)

I think it would make an awesome promotional video when it's done, and could be released like maybe a week or two before 1.0 to increase hype. Maybe even include some unreleased footage in there somewhere, at a later date of course, from a first person perspective with complete weapon animations.

But yea... Sign me up, baby!

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Nahand on 2005-05-06, 01:13
... been thinking in GEN-related vids for awhile but i lack any knowledge at doing them (own-age.com regular though :p ). That said, and as long as i remember the GMT equivalent to the CET timing, i'd certainly show up. I'd go as far as saying i'd get the demo of the static point for you, but we'll see. It's funny you mentioned that specific map and free-floating, because among the 40-so demos i have to clear on GEN folder, i *know* i have of free-floating one in Dead Simple, including (IIRC) some more or less cinematic angles/approaches. This demo wasn't sent - it sits here until i check it and get all screenies, before being dumped like the others. Interested in having a look? I think there where about 6 people playing (not 20 slot mayhem), but it could do for "fillers" in your movie overall...

EDIT: i forgot, this next Saturday is fine by me, but it can be the other aswell. OT, but, why not Orbb? (not a problem, i don't like it)...

I'm game. Sounds fun.

However, about the no chatting thing: There's a cvar to remove that, I believe. I think it's cg_draw2d 0

I'd love to help, however, it's really short notice for me, so I may not be able to do either day. I hope that you get all the ppl you need, and I'm sure it'll be great. :)

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-06, 04:33
it still disrupts the sound, and cg_nochatbeep doesn't seem to work. Besides, maybe I want some 2d stuff to show: just no chat for one single game, should be easily doable :P

Post by: Damager on 2005-05-06, 08:44
Great idea! :)

wherever, whenever :]

Been trying to convince people I know to try generations again but it's the whole part of getting them to download the files first.. needing some kinda inspiration to..

reminds me of the work of MarcoPolo for the game Planetside,

http://www.marcopolo.me.uk/PS_AD.html (http://www.marcopolo.me.uk/PS_AD.html)

nice way to make for a fan to make an advert for a game,

Not that I use orbb , but why no Orbb ?
anyway are we allowed to play as sorlag but with orbbs head ?

( to bad the server doesnt have the arachnatron model :( )

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Makou on 2005-05-06, 11:15
Orbb is quite possibly the most annoying player model ever conceived, that's why. Bones would rank second.

As for Sorlag with Orbb's head, I have an odd feeling that Tab disables the headmodels setting on his end, so use away... he still won't see it. ;)

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-06, 13:39
Indeed, because Orbb is not only an ugly and stupid model, it also has horrible sounds. Normally cg_headmodels is 1 for me, but it will be 0 for this, yes :]

I'll be there if I'm back from the gig. I'll also tell BAT.

Post by: Phoenix on 2005-05-06, 19:19
Cg_draw2d still shows text and chat and obits, because I use it to record demos and take screenshots.  Notice the obits in the screenies, but not "SPECTATOR" plastered across the bottom in giant white letters?

6 pm Eastern is bad for me, and keeping me quiet in a game is next to impossible anyway.  I'm just too excitable that way.  :)~

Post by: Thomas Mink on 2005-05-06, 23:16
I actually forgot about the races I go to every week on Saturday... guess because they were rained out the last 3 weeks. It's supposed to be nice this weekend though, so I most likely won't be able to show up.

So unless it rains every Saturday, it's actually a bad day for me. :)

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: mecha on 2005-05-06, 23:16
everyone should unbind their talk binds, hell, unbind the console too ;)

should be silent then, I guess :P

I'm willing to show up for this thing, saturday afternoon will work nicely. just tell me what to do in the game.

a way to mask unwanted sounds would be to have some background music in the promo vid. just a thought.

9pm CET = 8pm GMT = 3pm EST

so

midnight CET - 11pm GMT = 6pm EST

11pm GMT then. I'll still be guitaring and throwing shapes. Hope it goes well for you lot.

I can't do next Saturday unfortunately.  I'd love to help you out though Tabun.

If I may just make two suggestions...

I think you should probably make the Euro server  password protected for that game to prevent a random guy from joining in and saying, "Hi guys!" or some other friendly greeting.  Plus, there really wouldn't be a good way to go about informing the new player of what's going on.

Utilizing the Team Speak server (is that still up?) might be a good way for everyone to vent their need to talk. :)

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: shambler on 2005-05-08, 12:39
Sorry I couldn't make it, I rushed back and got on about 12.30.

Teamspeak. Why doesn't anyone use it? Why type when you can talk and shoot at the same time? (I am a really slow typer, not due to hand speed, but due to dylexia, I have the hands of a guitarist, but typing in a game takes me out of it for too long. Why I never talk much in game.)

Its still up, at  69.93.136.72   just checked it out.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-08, 14:30
There was no 'big-game' yesterday, only 4-5 attendees, so you didn't miss anything. It will probably happen not this or next week, but the week after, since a few peeps have already acknowledged that they'd be able to join then. And it gives others some more time to find this thread.

I don't use teamspeak for several reasons. One is that I feel like a nut talking into a mic when I'm fragging, another is that it takes up some bandwidth that I'd like to use for whatever game I'm playing, yet another is that I have no headset. Admittedly I don't use a whole lot of team messaging, so that might be why, too. In clan games I used to play, I had special binds with useful messages, like 'Quad back in 20' or 'Defense is weak!' etc.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: shambler on 2005-05-08, 16:56
I see. Thanks for telling me the game was off. I'll look forward to the right night then.

I thought that teamspeak only used about 9k/s? anyway, the mike thing doesn't bother me. I use one often with my PA system so I don't notice it anymore.

Do you have a map or two in mind for the vid that we should be running around to find out where things are like?

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-08, 17:06
Angst's dead simple remake (red2m7, if i'm not mistaken), is one that will definately be used. It is both nostalgic and a big open arena, which is perfect for this kind of thing. Other suggestions are still welcome.

Maybe q3dm17 will be nice for a short(er) bit, because it's so popular among Q3'ists..

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: scalliano on 2005-05-08, 17:23
I'd go with those maps, along with perhaps:

Earth: Dunwich
Slippy: Dark Zone
Strogg: Frag Pipe

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-08, 17:38
Hm, I fear not:
wdct Dunwich: rooms, hallways and vertical madness: no good.
Dark zone: rooms, hallways and vertical madness, the central arena is nice, but too cramped.
The Frag Pipe: rooms, hallways and vertical madness, the central arena is nice, but way cramped.

For promoting Gen as a nostalgia mod those maps are fine (although I'd rather pick a wolf3d style map, not Dunwich) - but not for huge games like this one. I'll do something else to promote other/normal maps.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Lordbane2110 on 2005-05-08, 19:09
yeah i use a mic normally i can't be bothered though as nobody else is

but i use roger wilco

and well.   it never effects both my ping or my gaming

so if anything it would probably just add to the game

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: YicklePigeon on 2005-05-08, 21:17
Me, rick, chara and others have found that using Skype in the background does not use that much extra bandwidth...and we still have a consistent ping (for me that'd be 53-60ms) without packet loss thanks to Tabby's tips.

It's also good quality...although I tend to clip a microphone/earphone set to the top of my t-shirt and use my headphones :}  - it should also be pointed out that I've never used Skype beyond a 5 player game (including myself in that count).  But I haven't noticed any skippyness in other players.  Not to say there isn't any, just that I haven't noticed :}

Regards,

Yickle.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-08, 21:18
Not everyone has the same perception, connection and system as everyone else, obviously: I've known people with relatively shoddy connections, who claim not to notice 50% of their bandwidth being claimed by kazaa and whatnot. Fine for them, but I do :]

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Thomas Mink on 2005-05-08, 22:15
I use ventrilo on extremely rare occasions... but I rarely talk much when I do use it. It's just to listen. That way, people can tell me stuff and I'll still hear it. But *shrug*... I don't talk much.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: shambler on 2005-05-08, 23:02
What about 'Eternal Arenas'  that map could look good from a player point of view. anybody who knows the originals could get a kick out of seeing it.

Or maybe we could make a map, using a room or two of some of the best Gen maps, just for the vid? it could then have a few big open areas.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: ReBoOt on 2005-05-09, 10:27
Uhm that whould indeed take sometime to create one of those map sure you could do a basic and ugly map quite fast but to have a detailed one requires some work. the idea however sounds nice.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Nahand on 2005-05-09, 14:48
... was going to suggest Eternal Arenas aswell. It's not open spaced, but good angles *are* possible, you'd just have to edit vid later to get only those. I think its unnecessary to refer the nostalgic/re-enactment reasons behind the choice ;) On the subject, an Eternal Arenas 2 (much more expanded/layout thought out) would rock...

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: Tabun on 2005-05-09, 15:23
Aside from it being a not very good looking map (I don't want to be blunt about it, but it just isn't very good overall), Nahand is right: no open spaced arena.
Again, the 'big game' is not the only thing I want included in a promotional vid, so don't worry yourself about that. This thread, and the map suggestions related to it, are about the 'big game'. A huge free for all fragfest in one (or more) arena type maps. The only purpose will be to show the chaotic madness of Generations. Don't worry about anything else for the vid, this will not be the only part of it. Now, please focus powah! :]

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: OoPpEe on 2005-05-10, 08:26
Personally I believe you should go with the most popular maps.

Quake:
I never played it online, just countless hours on Lan, I like "House Of Chthon", nice and open.

Quake 2:
The Edge, obviously this is the most popular map. Sadly though there is alot of that vertical madness Tab. mentioned, however showing this map with the vertical madness is kinda debatible. Showing it though will get the Quake 2 fans all in.

Doom:
Simply Dead (red2m7 is the remake) was a favorite (well it was with alot of my friends and online friends). However that is a very basic map which would be hard to get the whole Doom gameplay in, since the trademark BFG isn't in it.

Earth:
Personally I cannot think of any maps, I found Wolfenstein 3D better than RTCW, I am just more of a classic gamer. There are not any real maps which show off Wolfenstein 3D except for the Generations map. Honestly the best way I can think of advertising this side is to make a whole new map which has RTCW and Wolf3D level design in it. Getting the classic look will get many interested and so will the RTCW look.
Personally though, I miss the RTCW Telsa - are there ever any plans to include this as Earths Lightning gun replacement (of course balance the hell outta it).

Quake 3: Use the favorite Q3DM17

I would have to say in this video to get the best advertising it would require a few games. As in on the Quake 1 map everyone plays as SlipGaters for awhile and record. Do same for Q2, Doom and Earth (play as everyone as the class, then later have all classes). Have the whole basic "Earthlings" "Doomers" "Slipgaters" "Stroggs" "Gladiators" intro where it shows the only battles. Then at the end show the whole "Throw them all together" and then show the footage of all the classes taking eachother out.

Of course this whole post is just my opinion (also I didnt read this entire post), just tossing out a few ideas.

have you even PLAYED the map?!
*twitch*
Seriously, the bfg spawns in the deathmatch-mode specific exit room, with TWO BOXES OF AMMO next to it. There's more to that map than the center square.

Title: Re: Promotional Video
Post by: OoPpEe on 2005-05-10, 08:43
Hmm must of missed it. I did play it but awhile ago, with Quake 3's gameplay I basically overlooked it because of the size (I generally have a 1 on 1,  and a map that small doesn't work out too well for balancing.)

Doesn't look like it. It needs to be more effectively promoted I think (and we'll need to be clear on a specific date. Next week is better, the week after more so, in this respect.
