I remember watching a video where a couple of Microsoft employees pulled a somewhat similar stunt on their co-worker's office while he was away.  They covered the entire floor of the office with cardboard cups filled with colored water forming some kind of mosaic picture.  I saw the video at the Microsoft museum while I was visiting Redmond to check out a college, but I'm sure it's available somewhere to download.
