I've been following this fellow for several months now, and what he's doing with Doom and Doom II is phenomenal.  It's bringing the third dimension to Doom and Doom II without destroying the original look by using voxels.  He's even doing the first-person weapon sprites with a very unique process that ends up looking right when weapon swap is in action.  Just check out his videos.  He's not completely done, but there is a version released on moddb:

Makou:
Voxel work like this is always impressive. Some of the enemy models look a little off, but giving the sprites actual depth by extrapolating what might have been intended there can do that, and that's not a knock on it at all.

Doomsday this ain't, and that's a good thing. :doom_thumb:

Thomas Mink:
Some things seem a little off, but that's probably up to interpretation. Still, certainly a lot better than the models I've seen for Doom that are pretty much ancient at this point. The voxels are retro, and hold the style and feel extremely well. I hope he's able to finish.

And I like Doomsday.. only I use sprites because the models didn't age very well, even from a retro standpoint.

Looking at the videos it is very weird seeing the weapons sway left and right and not just the moving sprite.

Given that things are still in development, Perhaps even more so now than ever DooM really is eternal isn't it?
