Title: Rare moments in DM (Ever have this happen to you?)
Post by: Assamite on 2004-09-23, 02:50
Unfortunately, I have neither a demo nor a screenshot of this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

I was just playing Rubilaxe, and somehow, we ended up blaster-dueling. Neither of us survived.

For the slow, that means that we both killed each other. With blasters. At the same time.

Personally, I think the worst thing to happen is when you get knocked around with a rocket or whatnot and get forced to crater... it's worse than humiliation in my book.

Humiliation's not the point. You get rocket-cratered all the time. How often do you see two blaster-duellers die at the same time (without any outside intervention, I might add)?

How about someone chainsaw killing you at the same time you kill them with a shotgun?  It's happened.

I think... I've seen simultaneous gauntlet deaths before...

but yeah - two blasters - what are the odds =]

Or how about fist-killing somebody, then getting killed by a direct hit from that person's BFG ball?

I still can't believe that happened.

Actually...

THE strangest kill yet in Generations was when Tabun got me with a BFG10K on ztn3dm1...

...WHILE I WAS SPECTATING!!! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT????

simultaneous rail-kill, rewired and I have that on occasion.

Hehe, didn't you know Tek? I can frag you anyway I want ;]

anyway, the weirdest moments in DM were all in Quake2 for me I guess.
But generally amusing stuff:

- tossing a grenade, then getting in a catfight and both getting popped by it
- overbouncing when you least expect it
- rocketjumping out of the lava and killing the bastard that sent you in, but never expected you to survive ;]

Oh wait, that last one was not weird - except for him ;]

- Chainsaw-jousting over the ramps on q3dm17 only to both end up in the wrong place.
- Fragging Hollowpoint from the opposite end of Vesperas with a Doom rocket :ninja:
- I'll post the screenie I came across of a bot pyramid on q3ctf4 when I can dig it out. Watch this space!
- Actually winning.

One of my weirdest DM moments occurred on Liquid Carbon.  One time, Omega-X came up behind me.  I fired my sniper rifle at the wall, then the bullet ricocheted and fragged him!  I was probably just as surprised as he was at that.

I also remembering cornering Con with the chainsaw while I was invincible in the little alcove with the BFG on Vesperas.  I still remember him saying "I hate you, Rob!" after that.  :D

EDIT:  I just remembered another one.  I once managed to dance around someone's Slipgate Thunderbolt without getting hit...

there is 1 but I can't tell ya guys due this would be ending in the Controversy corner   .

so heres another 1 . having 10 life as an earth soldier and no bullets to spare .
some doomer comes running straight at me with his chainsaw reving . so out of pure defence to make shure i go down with a fight I poke my knife straight forward into the doomguy , he died while he was slicing me . had 1 or 2 life .

other 1 was in normal q3 where I railed sombody trough the fog of dead while I was standing on the bottom of the fog of dead ( I didn't die for some reason and had ammo enough )

in ET I also had a weird moment on railgun ,  it was 20 secs for the end of the match and I was alied engineer .
we where winning and pushing the axis back .

so just because of fun i shot from my spawn a rifle grenade up into the air over a mountain .

next thing I killed 2 axis players with a rifle grenade .

I remember just this last Saturday or so, I fell into the lava on gen-q1dm1.  I figured I was fragbait, so I discharged my lightning gun.  I popped back out of the lava and landed on the floor with about 6 health.  Lava discharge and LIVE?  I didn't even have any armor!  :wtf:

Tek:  I hope that spectator frag was .99d or prior.  Otherwise expect a paddling for not posting a bug report. ;)

Yes yes, that was a .99d occurence =p

I think it can pass as some kind of freakish fluke, but even my roomate witnessed it. I have abseloutely no idea where to start to try to replicate it, so we'll see =p

Isn't the power of the Shaft's discharge ammo dependant?

Yes in q1 it was ammo dependant.

Title: Re: Rare moments in DM
Post by: Phoenix on 2004-09-24, 22:19
And so it is in Gen as well.

Tek:  What's even stranger is when I got blown up by a Strogg rocket as a spectator back in .99d.  I put a statement in the damage call function to completely ignore spectators, so in theory that should not ever happen again.

Last night playing Q2 was rather fun.  I railed a guy out of the air and I got called a hacker, despite the fact that I was not in the lead.  I also got called a "noob" repeatedly for going for the powerups on Q2DM3.  Funny, but I thought they were there for a reason.  It's not my fault nobody else seemed to want them at the time!  ^_^

what do I need to make it go? (I use telejano for Q1)

? , every quake runs on xp .

Title: Re: Rare moments in DM

The usual problem with running Quake 2 under WinXP is getting it to install. XP doesn't like to autorun the installer, so you have to explore the contents of the CD and manually start it up. Not a major problem. :)  Just be careful that you don't accidentally disable DirectX in the window that pops up when it tries to autorun...

I think I witnessed the lava-discharge-survive thing, Pho. I know I saw something like that, and though it was incredibly odd... :wtf:

oh and if you wanna play quake 1 in opengl , copy the opengl32.dll from your windows over the one in your quake 1 .
since the one in your quake 1 is outdated

Just copy the contents of the Install/Data folder to your hard drive and apply the patch.
Voila!

GK: No the reason is that the opengl32.dll in the quake directory is for  3dfx cards. just delete or rename opengl32.dll in your quake folder..no need to copy the opengl32.dll from your windows directory since it will be used anyways.

And i have no problems running quake 2 on my windows XP puter. but i am using the latest q2 patrch

For Quake 1 I'd recommend using Q2K4.  It interpolates models.

So does MHQuake.

And it doesn't have that clipping bug on E3M3, either. :thumb:

Quake 2 Evolved and Quake 2 Max are both excellent source ports for Quake 2, but I recommend that you make sure you have the lastest patch installed for Q2 and the mission packs.  It can lead to odd save game behavior otherwise.

:offtopic: I got around to playing classic QW DM, and I've got to say: You die MUCH faster than in Gen or Slippy-only DM. Even faster than when quadwhoring dualgat-spammers are on the server!

I got around to playing Q2DM and RA2, as well. Why do the weapons feel so unresponsive?

Title: Re: Rare moments in DM
Post by: Phoenix on 2004-09-28, 08:50
In Q2 your weapon switch time is a lot longer.  We've not gotten around to that stuff yet since it's frames code.  Rocket Arena 2, depending on the server, can switch weapons at 2x normal speed or at normal Q2 speed.

Also, Q2 cycles the game logic only 10 times a second.  Q1 and Q3 both run at 20Hz, although Q1 only cycles your player's weapon frames at 10Hz.  This is why Q2 can feel like you're "Slogging through mud" sometimes.  It's NOT as responsive as Q3 when it comes to popping shots off at people.  I've noticed this too when jumping back and forth between the Strogg Troopers class and Q2 Deathmatch.

Also bear in mind we're not using 100% true to Q2 movement code.  In order to do that I have to rewrite the movement physics code.  Prior to .99c I wasn't comfortable doing that.  Having successfuly done this with the projectiles for Slipgate and Strogg I believe I will probably be able to do this for Slipgate and Strogg so that movement physics are 100% true to the old games.  We'll have to wait and see what this will involve and whether I get hit with any engine limitations or not.

Today in abandoned base, Pho and I were fighting in the water...  I went to shaft discharge, and  according to the console somehow I died from my own shaft, and from pho's BFG simultanously! Also I think it said Pho was killed by my shaft, but I don't think he actually died. Wierd.

Also I was fighting someone else, they ran out of ammo and started using the blaster, and I went in and did a point blank rocket blast. Somehow, the other guy died from my rocket, then I died from my own rocket, then I died from the blaster.  It was wierd cause I remember blowing myself up, seeing the "Gnam got bored with life" message, and simultanously hearing "HUMILIATION" then seeing the blaster message.

Maybe it's blip-outs in my conn causing replication errors. I was getting lots of split second ping spikes.

Gnam, you were skipping all over the place all night.  I think your connection was funky, because I didn't see anything abnormal like that.

Everything Pho said. Plus there's more health available in Gen.  :thumb:  :slippy_thumb:

Yeah Pho, I've been getting lots of split second ping spikes at random. It's very annoying, as you can be in the middle of a fight and all of a sudden the game freezes for half a second and next thing you missed your shot, or died. Are there any ways to deal with this kind of problem?

Title: Re: Rare moments in DM
Post by: Phoenix on 2004-09-30, 03:25
First is to rule out the obvious.  Is it only affecting gameplay, or does it affect websurfing and downloads?  Is it happening specific to Gen, Q3 in general, and are other games affected?  If you're getting hit with this in other games then I'd say it's a general networking or computer problem.  It could be anything from a flakey router upstream from you to a network card that's beginning to die, or even a software glitch.  If it's only affecting Gen, try other servers first to see if it's your route to host or if it's happening across the board on any server.  Once you know this we can work on tweaking if necessary if it's something specific to playing Gen.

Title: Re: Rare moments in DM
Post by: Gnam on 2004-10-10, 06:38
I'm pretty sure it's my net conn, cause it happens in other games as well (although it seems to happen less in other games, probably becuase there's less fast movement so it's less noticeable and harder to get out of synch). My /rate could be a little high, but I don't think that would cause spikes. It deffinitely affects both Gen and vQ3 equally, so it's not a Gen problem.
