Title: D2M3 - The Gantlet. (Done.)
Post by: ..::WHAT!? on 2004-06-02, 08:16
Well once upon a time, long, long ago. In a galaxy far, far away.  I was known at these forums for a breif period of time.  I originally introduced this map to Phoenix on ICQ.  The map had some problems, and so I left to work on it... kinda.  After computer issues, and corrupt files. I kinda just left it alone, until one day I was bored and decided it deserved one more go.

...And so finally, if you still care, and if you would be at all interested in using this level in the Generations mod please feel free to do so, all I ask is that my readme is included with the level in some way.  And if you don't want to keep the level for the Generations mod, well thats cool too.  But at least some feed back would be apreciated.  ;)

The odd thing is that this map popped up in a discussion thread on our beta testers board less than two weeks ago, and we were seriously considering using it.

It's nice to see it being offered even before we asked.

Thanks man, there's a very good chance of this one going in the next release. ;)

Did you know... I have doomish textures, including (animated) monitors, that might look nice in there somewhere? If you're willing to take a look, for consistency's sake (or just because they might look prettier ;)), they're in the Laced Neptune/Textures sticky thread.

Map looks sweet btw. Very clearly nostalgic and moodily Doomish - good work!

This was one of my fav maps on DooM II. It looks super on the screenshots! I have to download it!! And the textures look very good (doom 2 retexturing project?).

(doom 2 retexturing project?)

I don't think so - from what I've seen, the 'official' doom2 retexturing project has godawful material. Most of the artists in there know how to rip original doom textures, scale them up, and smear an overlay on it. Others know how to rip the work of others (mine, for instance) and only a handful know what they're doing.
I'm seeing a lot of original Quake3 textures, and, I think, one of my crate textures in there.

Yeah if you take a look in the readme I credited you for some textures.  I also used some texture sets from HFX, and the DooM tech wall textures actually did come from the Doom2 re-texturing project.

I'll have to take a look at the sticky and see what else Tabun has whipped up.  ;)

I am happy to see you all like the level!  I was actually contacted via E-Mail by Tekhead.  But its been a while since I heard from him.

::EDIT::

BTW - I do have some old DooM music tracks I thought about putting into this level for effect, but I don't know if that would be 100% legal...  Meh, I just think it needs some creepy music to finish it off. :thumb:

It would increase the D/L size by about 3 or 4 megs though.

As soon as I get off from work, I'll give this new version a good look-over.

@ Tekhead, thanks... I'll look forward to that.  I actually just had a chance to load the level into Generations.  I think I will be changing the one of the Grenade lunchers to a lightning gun so it appears as a chaingun to the DooM class.  I'll have to mess with it some more tonight, I am gonna be out the rest of the eavning.

Awesome. We've had problems in the past getting authors to change minor details for us. We appreciate all the help we can get. ;) (For those of you who don't know, the only reason we don't have Ziggurat Vertigo is because the version we found includes a railgun. The original author lost the .map or something...)

Also...

Would you be willing to put together a new version of Final Doom Map 13 (Vesperas)? The version in our mappacks is absolutely hideous and plays awfully, and is most likely going to be removed in the next release.

However, it's almost an iconic map to us, and we would really really like to see an up-to-date version of it, made from scratch.

Full credit will be given, of course. ;)

Everybody making all these sweet maps lately... it makes me want to finish my own that's been in the works for about two years now. But at the same time, it also makes me wonder if it'll be able to compete with all this stuff you people are whipping up.

Right... my ramblings aside, tis an awesome map there, ..::WHAT!?. The Gantlet was one of my favorite Doom2 maps. I really have no idea why... but it was. I'm happy to see it recreated, and remixed, at the level and quality you put into it. :thumb:

Its possible, Can you tell me if its level 13 of "TNT" or level 13 of "PLUTONIA" I looked for the level name "Vesperas" in both wads and I just didn't see it.

Once I know how big the level is I'll let you know.  ;)

Vesperas was actually part of the Master Levels for Doom II.  Send me a PM if you have trouble locating it.  There's a few 99e-ish things I might need to bring up that would aid in the map design that I don't want to discuss publicly at this point.

I recomend going to Doomworld's music section. They have lots of remixes, so you don't have to directly rip Id's stuff and incur legal wrath.

Update!

Updated the link on the first page to a new version of the level after following some advice from Tekhead.  You can also get the link here: http://corleonefamilymafia.com/The_Gantlet.zip (http://corleonefamilymafia.com/The_Gantlet.zip)

 - New items / some new item placement

- The lift that blocks the BFG pit will now crush you if you are a bit too slow.  :)~

- Torches in the center of the map now burn you if you stand on them.

- Some cosmetic touch ups... ect.

Anyway d/l and see for yourself.

-------------------------------------------
@ Games keeper, thanks but I have a copy of the wad now.

@ Gnam, Cool I'll check out that site ASAP.  :thumb:

Bad idea. BAAAAD idea. Especially with the water there. Earth and Strogg have a hard enough time getting there anyway. It's possible, but tough.

Do you really want the only class capable of getting the BFG every time without worrying to be Doom?

Baaaaad idea.

Earth is hard to get in there, but Earth does make it. I have had no trouble with slipgate or strogg.

... Meh its still up in the air, I'll see what everyone thinks and go from there.

I'm just going to add that any directly converted or ripped piece of music is breaking copyright laws.

However, if you remixed a version yourself, of gained permission of someone who did, then it's perfectly alright. See Not Quite Earth (myk_doom2 is the map name) in our mappacks

Just had a run around the map there. Much less chance of Doom or Earth players camping the central area with the Chaingun/Gat being in a better spot.

Liking what I'm seeing, just one question - TWO chainsaws?

heh... opps, I just realised that one myself, I ment to change one out for an ammo box but I forgot.

@ ConfusedUs, yeah I am going to try and find a good re-mix to put in there. and I will be sure to get permission.

... Has anybody else tried the BFG pit with the Slipgate and Strogg classes yet?

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: scalliano on 2004-06-03, 23:13
Haven't tried it with Strogg, but I tried Earth and got flattened every time. Every other class can make it with no problems.

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: Tekhead on 2004-06-03, 23:54
I can get in easily every time using Strogg and Slipgate (without strafejumping - just running from the button to the BFG spawn). Earth does need to gain some speed via strafejumping in order to get in there, but what is he going to get? More gats? That area is insignificant for him anyway, so it's allright if he can't get casually get in. It's possible for him to make it though, one just has to know how to make him move.

I like how the roof is now clipped off, but still has a lot of headroom. Excellent =]

The UAC wall logo in the Medkit room is a cool touch too.

Perhaps for the YA, it could be placed up on a small altar-like platform similar to the green armor in e1m1, still highlighted in yellow lighting? Just a suggestion - its location now works, but it could be better.

All-in-all, nice touchup  :thumb:  :thumb:

Not to be a nitpick, but the level's name is spelled "The Gauntlet." :P

Nice work on the map. I have little trouble with any class except Earth to get to the BFG room, though I got smashed as Strogg a few times. The BFG room isn't of much use to Earth anyways, the Gats are easy to find on their own.

As of the last version I played (didn't check out the new version yet) there was also a large ammo box in the BFG room that would really help out an Earther short on bullets. That's ample reason to get in there.

The insta-kill is a bad idea to me.

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: Tekhead on 2004-06-04, 03:55
As minute of a detail that this is...

What is the alternative to crushing? I think it does a good job of punishing the slow. Having it deal no damage is silly and causes a strange clipping issue - also it could be opened indefinitely. Having it deal light damage would have the same effect. One alternative would be perhaps to put a hidden teleportation field in the celing to throw them in a hellish suicide pit (like the end of doom episode 1)... but that'd take some effort ;)

Crushing works :)

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-06-04, 03:57
Dealing a small amount of damage is fine to me.

Of course, if he wanted to give it a Gen touch, he could put a few shooters in there set to go off immediately after the door closed. Room o' Doom, eh? :)

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: ..::WHAT!? on 2004-06-04, 05:45
What if I made the BFG pit so that it took away 100% heath?  That way the only way you would survive is if you went and got the Mega Heath before getting "crushed".

What about just adding a touch of nukeage, or that evil damaging water that sometimes showed up in Doom?  Make the floor hostile and you'll want to leave in a hurry.  I think it would work better than a squish-o-matic.

No, I am just talking about the door way that lets you in.

You hit a switch and you have a certian amount of time to make through the door and into the pit, if you don't make it you get crushed.  But some classes are slower then others and ConfusedUs is concerned this will tip the balance in the game so that Earth class won't have much of a chance, so I am trying to find a happy medium.  But to be honest I kinda like the crusher.

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: Tekhead on 2004-06-04, 15:08
Exactly - that area is insignificant for Earth, so there's no reason to be concerned for that class' sake ^_^

Post by: ..::WHAT!? on 2004-06-04, 17:30
Well this sucks...

Right now I am having trouble getting a full compile out of my level.  It just sits at the Vis compile line for hours until I finally get a message from windows that says my system memory is low and that its denying programs to access my system memory until windows finds a way to sort itself out.

However...

The level will compile if I use fast-vis.  This is just odd. :/

Anybody know what would cause this or how to fix it?

::EDIT::

Well on a more upbeat note I just got the ok from Ashley Carr (http://www.djredlight.tk/) to use her re-mix of "Count Down To Death" on this level, which is the original music this level had in Doom2.  :thumb:

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: scalliano on 2004-06-04, 19:38
I agree with Con - not only is there a big box of bullets but even if the Earthguy already has one gat there's still a shitload of extra bullets to be picked up from the twin gats too. ;)

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: Phoenix on 2004-06-05, 05:19
Yes, and if you have no gats at all that's 100 bullets for the dualgats pickup, plus another 100 for a gat ammo box.  That's 200 ammo plus any you have remaining from spawn for a theoretical max of 250 rounds - 50 rounds short of your carry limit.  That's a SERIOUS reason for Earth to visit that room.

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: Lopson on 2004-06-05, 08:35
Well...there's a lot of ammo boxes for Earth in almost every corner. So I don't need to go in there. Yes, it has a LOT of ammo, but i don't care about that room.

As I said on the last page no its not....

(http://host116.ipowerweb.com/~corleone/large_images/Doom95.gif)

 - its Gantlet, I dunno why. Ask id software I guess.

As far as the BFG room goes I think I am going to leave it, I mean this level also has to work in regualr Quake 3 Arena play, it would just be kinda weak to have no penalty...
I suppose I could just make it take a large chunk of heath though, we'll see.

And as I said Earth class will make it into the pit, you just have to try and be a little quicker.

Imagine that. :)

As far as the instant kill on the BFG secret... I agree, that's a bad idea. If it was in plain view without any switches or whatever to hit, I could see a high-risk-high-reward situation (like on Pain From Spain). However, it handicaps the Earth class, as it does have a reason to want to get in there, and that's being able to quickly load up on ammo, moreso than by running around the map for the usual pickups.

holy crap... this map went from over 2 megs to over 22!!

For the quality of music that went into the new pack... I don't think it's worth 20 megs. Stretching a tiny .mid file into 20 megs is a bit obscene - I'd reduce the bitrate of the song so that it goes at least under 5 megs.

It's cause he had to include the wav file for the music. Too bad Q3 doesn't support mp3s.

My bad about the spelling thing. It is wierd that Id decided to spell it like that though.

I know, but there really isn't much I can do about it. I'll play with it a little more in wave studio.

...I will also be uploading one without a custom music track as well, so pepole can choose for themselves.  But I recomend getting the one with the original music, it adds a lot od atmosphere to the level.

Erm, yeah. I'll try and have some more downloads up tonight. I plan on having a final version hopefully by tonight or tomarrow.

Personally, I draw the line way before 20 Megs on a single map. If you need music to get you going, you're not fragging hard enough ;]
For singleplayer, it's an entirely different matter - but that should be a resurgence issue.

Listened to the music and checked out the pk3. It's a pretty sober remix, but it has that atmosphere you mention - like all doom tracks :]

Btw, when I referred to the static/ugly viewscreens, I was referring to the COMPUTE* textures in there. Wouldn't it be cool to add in/bevel some brushes & slap my animated version(s) on them? Its one of the few uses of shaders that I haven't come to despise in Q3 ;]

And as I said Earth class will make it into the pit, you just have to try and be a little quicker.
Can't run any faster  :(

If you say so... I personally have been in there with earth class on several occasions. I know Tekhead has been in the pit as well.  If I have to I will downlaod fraps and post a vid of me doing it.  But it would be a lot easier if you just took my word.  Its possible, you just gotta strafe jump.

Anyway sorry didn't post that d/l I got kinda busy.  But like I said it will be up somtime soon and hopefully it will be final.

if the button was shootable and pressable, that may resolve this 'issue' without changing the flow of the map too much. It just might add to it - just another idea that I'm throwing on the table.

Hmm.. 'tis a good idea, however I am not 100% sure how to make things shootable.  I have also realized there are shader issues with this level, one of the button textures won't work unless you have lun3DM3 installed.  :(

::EDIT::

spork it, I'll just move the button up the way a little bit so it is not such a struggle to get in.

if I remember right, I think you make a func_button with a health value attached to it or something...

Title: Re: D2M3 - The Gantlet.
Post by: ReBoOt on 2004-06-07, 20:40
Tekhead is correct. just add: KEY:health VALUE:1
in this case the button has an helth of 1.

Well it appears I need shader help, and I am hoping sombody here can give me that help...

Here is my problem, the button for the lifts all look like this if Lun3DM3 happens to be taken away from my baseq3 folder...

(http://host116.ipowerweb.com/~corleone/large_images/wtf_J.jpg)

here is the script for that particular texture,

Code:
textures/TheGantlet/than_button2
{
surfaceparm trans
surfaceparm nonsolid
surfaceparm playerclip
{
  map $lightmap
  rgbGen identity
}
{
  map textures/TheGantlet/than_button2.jpg
  blendFunc GL_DST_COLOR GL_ZERO
  rgbGen identity
}
{
  map textures/TheGantlet/than_button2fx.jpg
  blendFunc GL_ONE GL_ONE
  rgbGen wave sin 0.9 0.1 0 1
}
}

The funny thing is, the than_button1 texture works fine and it uses the EXACT same script as this texture, obviously the only difference is that it would point to button1 instead of button2.

I have a feeling I am going to go through this same thing when I try to get Tabuns monitors to work.  O_o

well lun3dm3 is in our mappacks so odds are anyone who d/ls this in a future mappack will already have lun3dm3.

That's odd.... does the other (button1) texture user .jpg in the shader too?

Yes.

try to use lowercase letters in your shader, might be the problem.

EDIT:
Also don't use the .jpg extension use .TGA  even if the texture is .jpg eg. map textures/TheGantlet/than_button2.tga

for some reason q3 have problems with shaders using .jpg.

El UpdateO

Alright this is it, I am prepared to call this version final.  However if you see anything that needs attention don't hesitate to bring it up here.

This is the music version, I cut the hell out of the original wav file so now it is 7.49MB instead of 22MB  :thumb:

Get it HERE: http://corleonefamilymafia.com/GantletMusic.zip (http://corleonefamilymafia.com/GantletMusic.zip)

I will post a version with out a music file ASAP.

::EDIT::

 - Also thanks for the help ReBoOt, but it turns out I had another shader that the game was using, and it pointed the files in the worng direction. silly me, anyway I deleted it and it works fine now.

Well, I'm well happy with what I just had a few rounds on. I actually won a round with the Wolf3DGuy. And made the secret. Still quick enough to kill, but long enough for everybody.

Won a round with the Wolf 3D guy?

did you play it on a LAN or somthing?  Or can you have bot play in Generations, and I am just insanely dumb for not finding it?

- Questions aside though, I am glad you like it man. Thanks.

.:EDIT:. - typo.

Read the manual. :)

Anyway... set the minimum players when you start a server.

Or type:
/addbot 'botname' 'skill'

Like...
/addbot Phobos 5

I do it the Min Players way myself. Saves all that typing  ;)

Well the layout changes are pretty obvious, but I don't think detract from the level.  This falls into the "remix" category as opposed to a straight remake, but it's remixed decently.  Comments:

I have no trouble getting through the door to the BFG with any class.  Just strafejump a bit with Earth and you make it every time with time to spare.  Most of the fighting with bots tends to be in the central areas, which makes it difficult to whore with the BFG since you'll be at half health about 70% of the time you charge into the room.  The central area isn't too BFG friendly for fights as it is (never was in the original either) so that should help cut down on tanked BFG runs.

The "Quad in the crate" is a unique  first, and I like it.  You take a big risk going for those powerups.  Rail is nice and out of the way, and using the teleporter throws you into the thick of the action so it's a bit harder to take up an outside camp/snipe position since you have to run all the way back around.  Very good placement.

The only thing I might have done different would be to narrow the outside passages a bit so there's a bit less room to strafe around, but I see no reason to change that now.  Map flows good, plenty of places to get into fights with varying elevation, tight turns and stairs.  Berserker was a VERY nice touch, and it's neat seeing a chainsaw spawn.

Only one obvious bug I found, and that's a light bleed through.  If you look at the grenade launcher spawn, then turn left into that little nook you can see it on the floor.  Fairly minor.

Very good fun map.  I like it with the music, gives it that old-school feel!

Thanks a lot Phoenix, thats the first full reveiw I have been able to get for the level.
I am genuinly glad you like it. and I hope it is what you are looking for in the next Generations Arena release.  ;)

I agree with Pho about the powerups in the crates - you're left open to the odd grenade!

(As if nobody can tell, I'm very partial to maps that allow good exploitation of the GL)  ;)
