Title: Doom3: Sure, it looks good...
Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-07-18, 21:47
But does it sound good?

Scariness is more about audio than visuals, at least to me.

I may be startled by things jumping out of the walls, but hearing them skuttling around just out of sight is frightening.

The last game to truely scare the shit out of me was System Shock 2. Half of System Shock 2's atmosphere is auditory. At least. The rest is a combo of level design, the little clues left behind by the crew, and the sense that something is waiting for you.

I really hope Doom3 lives up to the hype, but visuals only go so far without the sound to back them up.

I guess we'll have to wait and, um, hear?

Well, since Doom3.com (http://www.doom3.com) went live, you can hear a clip from the game's title song. =P

If I'm not mistaken, Nine Inch Nails' ex-keyboardist did the music.

id should market Doom 3 as a Christian game. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, Phoenix, but how much more righteous can you get than to FIGHT THE FORCES OF SATAN?

You could even change a couple things to suit the bible belt. Make the fists a handheld cross, the BFG could be the Holy Grail, and instead of burning up, fallen creatures could drop to their knees and ascend to Heaven!

Sure, the modding community could produce something like that. Doom 3: Christian edition. :P

I read a preview of doom 3 and the previewer said that the sound was awesome! maybe he was exaggerating but he did say he nearly dropped the joypad (x-box version i guess)

I totally agree.
The sound in undying scared me shitless.

I had to turn the effects off in that game.

if only it had had a supernailgun, or twin gatts I could have finished it!

The sound in any good game is 50% the effect.

Man, that is soooo off-topic.  :p
But then again, I've always felt the same way - how could any religious person say it teaches us evil?

It's true. This game teaches us to DESTROY EVIL WITH OUR mouse. God save the DooM Marines

Exactly my point.  I said this when the ORIGINAL Doom was being bashed for being "Satanic".  So... running around with a shotgun blowing angels away would be considered Godly under that logic?  :wtf:

I would say Doom, Quake, Doom 3... anything that pits you against the forces of evil is teaching the RIGHT message:  Show them no quarter, take the fight to THEM, and give Satan a bitch-slap upside the face as often as possible.

I'm going to make a post in R&R about this, since it's got me in a mood to rant.

my motherboard has a good soundcard , and my radeon 9500 pro with passive salman cooler wil be up for the job . I still beat the crap out of geforce 4 cards and can almost compete with fx 5700 cards .

Cmon'...     If you want to put DooM3 with the Graphics setting in max you need a very powerfull graphic card!!!! not a 9500! a 9800XT or even a x800. Then a powerfull processor like 2.5 or 3 Ghz. And 1024 RAM memory is perfect

dont wanna say anything , but carmack showed the demo on a radeon 9700 when it was brand new ,
a 9500 pro is actually an underclocked 9700 pro .
( really , you can even download a hack that removes the block they put on it so people couldnt overclock it to a 9700 pro .

Well, getting slightly back to the issue at hand...

With all the reviews and previews that I've read, I've come to the conclusion that Doom 3 is little more than a revved up System Shock 2 without the character building aspect.  Especially when a little further reading told me how you have a PDA to receive emails from other people's PDAs and get crucial information...sigh, MFD anyone?

As for audio,  I agree with Con completely.  Nothing scared me more than hearing some previously unseen camera giving the "preliminary detection" sound or a zombie walking around in the distance...hell, take the original Doom.  That scared me too when I first played it.  Hearing those monsters...with only my popgun to protect me....23 health...no armor...wah!

Come to think of it, the original Doom still catches me off guard.  Somehow, I think Doom 3 is out of luck.  We shall see...and I wonder if there is a System Shock inspired mod for Doom 3 in pre-production...

Regards,

Yickle.

P.S. And here it is (http://www.sshock3.de.ms/).

I find it a bit premature to pass judgement on a game before it's even been played.

You're right Pho. The Final Judgement is when the demo is released.

Actually when the final retail product is released :}

After all, take a look at the DX:IW demo, a poor representation of what is (full version anyway) an ok game.  As it is, like I stated in my previous post, we shall see.

Regards,

Yickle.
