Title: Generations status (Been a while)
Post by: Skippy on 2005-08-12, 19:04
Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted. I just been looking on the website, and the forums for any recent (realtive) news about the status of Gen. I was wondering what is the status of the mod? Thanks.

Under construction :)

Games, the next time you post ahead of a team member regarding the mod's status, I'm going to delete your post.

Skippy:  Check my .plan on the Wirehead Studios main page.  Just click the big Wirehead Studios text at the top of this forum to go there.  The .plan list is in the lower part of the left hand page column.  :)

Also see this link (http://www.wireheadstudios.org/generations/tab_progress.php), if you're interested in the modelling/animation progress..

True, and while we certainly don't mind enthusiasm, it is polite to let the developers speak for themselves. :)

Thanks for answering guys. It looks as if thing are coming along great. Still, can't wait for version 1. And hopefully resurgence will happen, but I promise not to hold my breath.

So I take it we aren't gonna see the SFX outlined in your plan? : :shifty:

Maybe there should be a sticky thread called "Status of the mod", and Con could say "It'll be done when it's done. Quit asking."

J/K ;)

A sticky thread would be great. Every time something was done/added to the mod that was worth mentioning, it could be added.

Don't most people know not to ask for it's release date by now?

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: Moshman on 2005-08-16, 17:35
That would be an idea worth investigating in my opinion, but I'm not a team member so I can't speak for them.

/edit
nevermind, see Pho's post.  :shifty:

I'm not going to sticky every single change I make in the code.  Think about it - do you want me outlining everything, or actually working on the mod?  I do keep a running list of changes for internal development, and it stays internal for a reason - so I don't get swamped with questions about minor technical details when I could be pushing things forward.  It's also technical shorthand so outside of beta testers and those close to the development, it would raise more questions than it would answer.  You get to see the list of changes when a beta is released, along with some hints about what might be upcoming.  Otherwise, major things we sometimes highlight.  I do that in my .plan, and occasionally we post teaser pics, like when we model and skin new weapons or items.  Some things we'd like to save so you can go "ooh, ahh, wow" when we actually release, and other things can't be shown visibly so you just have to wait and play it.

Assamite:  It would help if I knew what "SFX" stood for in this case.  Does it mean sound effects, special effects, San Francisco Xylophone?  Proper usage of acronyms requires them to be defined on their initial usage within a specific context, otherwise you annoy the reader.

That's why I suggested a closed sticky topic that says "it'll be done when it's done. Quit asking." and nothing more

Asking when it will be done, and wondering about how it would be if it would be anywhere soon, is part of the joy of (some of) the fans, aswell as part of the social lubricant applied in internet-mod chatter. I see no reason to flame people in advance for asking?

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: Phoenix on 2005-08-18, 00:52
Aye, I wonder how many people we drove away with the "RTFM" tirades early on in our development, when a simple answer would have been much kinder.  Even if people should RTFM anyway, sometimes "hearing it straight from those who know" provides a much more solid answer, and a more personal touch.  This is why people still talk to priests. ;)

A little courtesy goes a long way, even if the answer isn't going to be what someone wants to hear.  I'll extend that courtesy to anyone who has a genuine question or concern.

Yes Pho. I remember when the first beta was inching its way for a release, and there would be people posting everyday asking when it would be out, it did get annoying after a while.

There was only one kind of SFX you mentioned in your plan...   Well, it's not like you're gonna show anything, so I'll just shut up now.

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: Phoenix on 2005-08-23, 00:51
Ahh, in relation to my .plan.  No, not going to show anything off there yet, because the impact models are placeholders right now.  Once we get the real models in place we might show a few teaser shots. :)

I'm still tryn to stick a model in....it's a Q4 gladiator model so yeah...what's with the 'not 100% supported' thing? Does that mean that models will be supported, but not well or what?

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: Lopson on 2005-09-06, 14:33
It means:
1st - You have to create a file so that the model can be recognized by the mod (for now).
2nd-Only works in LAN games (for now).

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: Phoenix on 2005-09-06, 14:43
What it means is we plan on adding additional stances and animations to player models.  Since that is not yet done, and nor is the information on how to properly set up a third-party model, we won't support any third-party models at present, the exception being Tab's Enforcer model because it was developed in-house.

In addition, all models have to be assigned a specific class to function correctly in Generations.  The only people who should be doing this are us (the mod team) and the authors of said models should they choose to add such support.  This is a consistency issue, as people may have differing opinions as to which model belongs to what class, and we want everyone to have the same models in the same classes, otherwise it becomes a mess.  Now it is possible to manually set up a third-party model to work with existing builds, but I will not post instructions on how to do it, and I will delete, without warning, any posts containing such instructions.  The reason is I do not want to have people altering pk3 files or doing other things to potentially break either their Gen install or an install of a third party model, which will invariably result in a tech support request that we'll have to answer.  The rule is here, if you figure out how to do it on your own and break it, you fix it.  Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to supporting third-party models, but I don't want well intentioned people messing up their installations either.

Damnit..i know what class it belongs to, but yeah i can wait.

I'll figure it out sometime, and i really don't care about online multiplayer, cos i suck arse and i'm in Australia on 512k internet...where most of you guys have what? 5mb cable? 10?

Oh great...i'm a dopefish.... -_-

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: Phoenix on 2005-09-07, 15:33
Oh, the custom title!  No worries about that, it's automatic, not intended to be an insult.  Everyone starts out at Dopefish, and the more posts you make the more powerful a critter you are.  We all have a soft spot for ol' bucky the fish, so dopefish are always welcome.

We're in all sorts of places.  Some people are West Coast US, some Eastern, some Central, Tab is in the Netherlands, ReboOt is in Sweden...  a very multi-cultural group here.  As for connections, it varies.  Some 5mbit cable (like myself) or better, some ADSL, some are on crappy college campus networks.  Up until a few months ago, 'Boot was still on dialup, and I know Vorlonesque still is.

That Farside comic had a date of 1985?! Dopefish has been around that long?! Cool.

"The FarSide cartoon above was given to me on November 2, 1995 by Matt Long of Software Creations. This cartoon originally said Pirahna where it says Dopefish."

How did you do that? BTW does anyone knows if the Dopefish is in DooM3?

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: scalliano on 2005-09-21, 19:30
Easy, really. I loaded up Angst's excellent "Ruins of Babel" map and using a combination of:

devmap re2m8
noclip
cg_thirdperson 1
cg_thirdpersonangle 180
cg_thirdpersonrange 100

and my own personal Q3 skin (see left) I was able to pull off the shot you see above. Before I knew what a dopefish was I thought that the big creature was a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (babel, fish ;) ) but now I know better.

You can get the map here:

Dont have to use noclip to get into that room, in the center of the map (foggy room), the center pillar has 3 skills and a glowing one. Walk up to all 4, each time you touch one it drops, if you drop all of them, the Dopefish room opens.

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: scalliano on 2005-09-22, 20:56
You only need to hit the one that drops to open that room. However, I'm actually inside the tank in that pic and you do need noclip for that.

So much for any "easter egg" potential for that one.

Title: Re: Generations status
Post by: OoPpEe on 2005-09-22, 22:26
Couldn't really say it was much of one as it was obvious to access. When I first played the map I knew that wall opened as that part of the wall was pushed in.

Q3DM11 had a good easter egg as it wasn't at all visible. Although I hated the "mutated" DopeFish they used, so I threw in the classic Dopefish in its place.
