Title: Doom Items - Some Previews (Doom Items, modelled and skinned :])
Post by: Tabun on 2003-01-24, 03:11
Just something to get some content on this board too.
I'm currently modelling & skinning doom items (health, ammo, powerups) and this is what gives, so far:

http://www.planetquake.com/tabun/pics/doom..._items_pre1.jpg (http://www.planetquake.com/tabun/pics/doom_items_pre1.jpg)

Note that a Beserk skin for the health-kit is done too, with a nice glowing red-cross shader.

I'll update this thread whenever more is up for the showcase.

first of: tab it looks good as i have been saying all along

socond: a question: will there be a green shader inside the helmet? like in doom1&2?

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: dev/null on 2003-01-24, 16:59
What's the average poly count on the new items? Are you keeping them in the general limit of the original Q3A items or are you going above and beyond?

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Tabun on 2003-01-24, 16:59
Jup, the inside of the helmet will glow green, likewise with the healthvial (not vile btw, the archvile is a project that one of my much more skilled modeller friends are going to tackle soon, hopefully ;))

Also, the poly limit is above and beyond the default q3 items. 200 to 250 for the boxes, and about 400 max for more organic/complex models. Nohting too insane, but definately along the lines of the increase in polycount we saw with the weapon models.

games: he'll make it from scratch, animate it, and then I'll skin it - and it will be a bloody great model (undoubtedly the best arch-vile out there when its done ;)) (if he keeps his promise)

ehhm TAB I just wanned to help ya and tell ya that I already have a
cyberdemon
arch-vile
demon
cacodemon
mancubus
heavy weapon dude.

the models are all finished but they need animations and some of them need skins .

I once got them from dragonspyre who is an exellent modeler (made the imp , arachnatron and revanant .
but since he has a job now he couldnt finish them . so after much asking he gave them to me .
problem is I dont have 3d studio max to complete the models .

anyway if you want to look into it give me a signal and I send it to ya .
(please look into it those models are really great  with lots of detail and still low poly .

anyway have a look at his models on his site .

http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cotta...es/dragonspyre/ (http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/dragonspyre/)

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Tabun on 2003-01-25, 00:43
i KNOW about dragonspyre's stuff. I have seen them and are aware of the models that have been made - with exception of the arch-vile, since that wasn't on his site last time I checked.
I was just telling you that Andy, the modeller I was talking about, is more experienced and more skilled.
Afaik, Angst was working on finishing the skins that needed finishing - Dark-Horizon had done quite a bit of work on that department, before he too got too much work to keep at it.

Awesome models and skins!
Very doomish looking too, except for the helmet. I wonder how it will look with that glowing green visor.

With such beautifull items, it's almost a shame to pick them up...

That caco skin is being a pain in the ass, but I THINK I've almost got it finished..

I'll at least release the skin once I'm done with that, I don't think I really wanna tackle animating that SOB

Hmmmm...hadta re-register...my account got wiped, probably because I don't post as much as everyone else.

Anyway, excellent models, Tab.  Amazing recreations of their Doom counterparts, and I can't wait to see them in the game.

That Arch-Vile'll be nice, too...I always hated fighting them, but they were damn cool monsters.  And what's this I hear about a Cyberdemon model already done?  I've seen the mancubus, revenant, chaingunner, demon, and cacodemon, but not the Cyberdemon (I've feverishly been looking for one, lol).

Anyway, once again, congrats on the great modelling work.

I had to re-reg, too. I did it with a slightly different name, though. a lot of ppl know me only as Atom235.

As for the models, they look GREAT, especially if the armor bonus get's his green glowing eyes back (if that's possible by shaders or smthing, I don't know much about Q3 engine shaders).

Parapsyche: I've heard gossip about Cyber, too. I think I saw a pic of it in the IRC, I'm not sure though... maybe I was dreaming :D

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-01-27, 02:15
I hope it's as mean and ugly as the old one. The sprite based cyberdemon was a real badass. It was big, ugly, and intimidating. Some of the newer big monsters were just sortof there, not really demanding the attention that thing did. The shamblers were big and powerful, but they seemed too funny to be intimidating. The tanks and tank commanders of Quake2 were just big lumbering bricks. They looked like a big stove that shot bottle rockets and they were funny when they died too.  Anyway, is anybody working on that other stuff? The Quake1 fiend ought to be good when it gets finished.

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Tabun on 2003-01-27, 02:36
I agree on the tanks, but the shambler scared the shit out of me back then :]

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Angst on 2003-01-27, 03:05
Well, you've got this thing with teeth and claws in your face, and it's like twice your size.. It was pretty scary, but not half as bad as that first sight of the cyber.. Considering I opened the door and THERE THE SONOFABITCH WAS! At any rate, more models that might need skins are good, I should be finishing up the caco as soon as I can find those files again...

3 hd's all former boot partitions, it's in here SOMEWHERE... I hope...

Man, i remember that one level in Quake where the Shambler comes outta the dark gate at the end.  You open it, and you think you're all clear, but WHAM!  Claws in the face.  Scared the crap outta me.  Actually...I think Vores scared me the most.  Their sounds were freaky, and the things the threw at you seemed to ALWAYS find you, even if ya hid behind a corner.

The Cyberdemon was always so cool.  The Doom 64 variation was better than the original, however.  It was about three times as tall as you, where the one in original Doom was only about twice your size.  Cyberdemon = most widely known enemy from Doom, I think.  It's always the first one that comes to mind when I hear the word Doom.

By the way, thanks for restoring my postcount.  Now I don't hafta post like mad to get it back up, lol.

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Tabun on 2003-01-27, 13:51
Not for me tho, the monsters that i think of when you say DooM are the imps (immediately hearing that sound when they roam) and barons of hell - in that order.

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews

heh, i played gauntlet alot as you can see

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-01-27, 22:34
Somehow I always think of the horned devils first. Cyberdemons, Barons, and pink demons in that order. I think the cyberdemon was so impressive because it's big, it's ugly as hell, and it's feet make that intimidating clunk as it walks. When you hear that, you know something BIG is close by. The shambler is scary up close with those big teeth right in front of you, and no eyes visible. At a distance though it looks like a big fat white mole that walks really funny. Somebody ought to make an extra model of one with a cone-shaped party hat on it's head. One of those things with big polka-dots all over it. If you can see a shambler from many yards away, especially from slightly overhead and head on, you might see what I mean. Also shamblers aren't that tough when they can't shoot lightning at you. A pair of knights killed one once with their swords. Anytime two of something can beat on a shambler continuously it's enough to overpower one. What happens is the big oaf will turn to swat the first guy that chopped him as the other gets in his hit. The shambler will wince from the second hit, turn to hit guy #2 and get chopped in the side by the first guy. If you do it right with your helper, the shambler never gets in one scratch.

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Thomas Mink on 2003-01-27, 23:59
My most remembered Doom enemies were the Arachnatron and Mancubus... as you can see, Dead Simple was my favorite Doom2 single player map. Come up from the elevator, and BAM... 5 or so Mancs. As if that isn't enough, you kill the Mancs and BAM again, like 15+ Arachnatrons! WICKED level, man. :)

Arachnatrons and Mancs also happen to be my favorite Doom enemies... Arachs taught me how to circle strafe properly and had a cool death sound/sequence. Mancs had a cool death and were just... different. :)

As for Quake... that first Fiend scared the bijeezus outta me. Jumped like a foot out of the chair when it leaped at me. Shamblers weren't bad, and the same goes for Vores. Those 3 were all good, but my favorite Q1 enemy was the Enforcer... don't ask, I have no clue. They were just cool. :)

yes lost souls were a bitch, but the first time i encountered the cyberdemon (or he encountered me), i'd had my pitiful little labtec speakers up almost full volume, and when he roared at me i almost had to change my underwear....

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-01-28, 23:01
Use hit and run methods on the big spider. Use rockets, bfg, or plasmarifle to inflict some serious damage quick then duck behind a corner. Repeat until it turns to mush. I don't know anything for lost souls. I hate those damn things. Just keep a shotgun loaded and ready and fire when they get close. I once drew a map on paper called claypidgeon and my cousin made it with DEU. His early rendition was junk because he filled it with archviles and barons. I edited with DEEP and it was great. When you run out into the main big room everything lights up with assorted gunfire. If you keep running you can get the monsters shooting each other. I wish they could find the floppy it was on. Maybe I can replicate the map on GTKRadiant for quake3. :D

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Angst on 2003-01-29, 02:21
Lost souls were fun, wait for them to pause right before attacking, line up the pistol shot, hit 'em when they charge.. They'd float back helpless until they hit something :P

Title: Re: Doom Items - Some Previews
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-01-29, 22:16
It looks pretty good but the head is a little small and the teeth are pretty square and human-like. The original id shambler had big sharp carrot teeth, just big stained triangles more or less. It's head was just a big pointed lump but I guess this one's an improvement. Also the pistol method is OK on lost souls but not if there's a bunch of'em. Use something that can hold the whole bunch of them still like the plasma gun. I always hated them anyway. For best results on dead simple, leave one fat slob alive until you've got enough ammo to take on the spiders. When you're ready, kill the last slug and then head for the nearest door coming down. Nail the spiders in front of you as quick as you can and get out into the outer ring of the map. Go in a circle blasting each spider that gets in front of you.

Is anybody working on wolfenstein nazi's? Somebody should at least put the blue SS officers in Resurgence. They were in wolfenstein AND doom2, so at least earth and doom would've encountered them.
