Title: Strogg Machinegun (2) Skinned (New skin work)
Post by: Tabun on 2006-07-01, 14:22
Well ladies and laddies, I'm back. I once again join Phoenix in active Wirehead/Generations service.

Strogg Machinegun, updated (http://www.tabun.nl/tmp/strogmg2_shots.jpg)

You may remember our old model and skin (http://www.tabun.nl/tmp/strogmg_shots.jpg). Now, a worthy version has been completed for addition to the Strogg arsenal. I will be animating it promptly, to finalize the Strogg art-section.

Also, A special player skin pack will be released (very soon). With this 'add-on' to Generations, you will be able to recognize all the (actively playing) members of the Wirehead team.

The Wirehead team skins (http://www.tabun.nl/tmp/gen/preview_teamskins.jpg)

You will be able to easily recognize:
ConfusedUs: In blue and silver.
Dr. Jones: In green and gray.
Makou: In red and black.
ReBoOt: The mean Swede in yellow and blue (the colours of the Swedish flag, which is no coincidence, I'm sure!)
Phoenix: In red and gold, just like the alternative colour scheme of our site.
And myself, in orange and blue camo' gear.

In the pack will also be several Q3 Major skins. These will make her definitely more Stroggy, as they will represent Athena, Brianna, Cobalt, Jezebel, Jungle and Stiletto from the Quake 2 we all know and love.

Watch out for these, and we'll keep you posted..

About time that machinegun got a nice makeover.

As for skins.. kinky.. now all we need is a pink arena skin. :D

And a light blue one ...

Eh.. at least there's blue skins. Every generation but arena has a pink skin tho. :)

One thing I noticed, not to be picky or anything but, where do the bullets/clip go on the gun? Just curious.

The same place they went on the original!

You shove a magazine up through the handle, like an Uzi.  I didn't bother to mesh a protruding magazine because I wanted a clean, uniform appearance, so assume it's a nice form-fitting clip like a German Luger has.  Otherwise, use your imagination, this is a video game after all.

Now the better question is... how does the Strogg chaingun shoot without any visible bullet belt? ;)

I think I have an answer! They just shove the bullets into a pocket dimension and link the weapons to said dimension, thus no reloads are required unless said ammo in said dimension runs out!

*Gets shot for crazy theory* What?! YOU think of an explaination on how they can carry EVERY ammo type on their bodies then! The same goes for the weapons!!!

I could write an inconsistency list a mile long regarding weapons behavior in video games if I really wanted to.  The point is to maintain just enough realism to give just enough believability that the player suspends their normal view of reality in favor of the fantasy provided by the game.  Video games are escapist by nature.  Too much realism takes the fun away.  Then you get...

I believe myself that realism takes the fun away from games, and I believe I don't think any should try to exaggerate realism too much. However I still refuse to believe any explaination on weapon/ammo behavoir outher than my "pocket dimension" one. ^_^

Post by: Phoenix on 2006-07-07, 18:29
Well, in the Elite Force Star Trek shooters, there was a viable explanation for how you could carry around so many weapons and ammo.  You had a portable transport buffer that could store items in molecularized form indefinitely.  That's not quite a pocket dimension, but it's the logical equivalent.  ;)

I still believe that in DooM and Q1, both main characters had slaves. The DooM guy had a bad-ass pinky biker, with the black coat and piercings. Ranger had a stupid zombie.

Wanna totally spite realism?
Make a gun that shoots asian clowns. And when they hit the wall they go: Honk!

Go do that in Doom. Replace the Rocket Launcher with a Clown Launcher! :D

EDIT: I misread "Spite" as "Sprite"... :ninja:

Actually, there was a mod for HL that substituted the Grenade Launcher of the MP5 for a Scientist Launcher, and when they were in mid-air, they'd just scream "Do you know who ate all the doughnuts?

We're getting a bit :offtopic: here, but does anyone remember the Yoda mod for Quake 2?

I believe I do, Pho.  Is that where various objects in Q2 (including player model) was transformed into Yoda?  That was pretty goofy.  I remember playing a server every once in a blue moon.

Glad to see some updates to the project.  Love the machine gun.  Anxious to see more skins for the Stroggs as well.

I've noticed servers seem to be empty as of late.  We should try to plan a forum game soon.

I was on last night at 9 pm eastern, for about 45 minutes.  I was very tired though so I didn't stay around.

I still want to see my baby jesus rocket launcher. Fires a standard missile with a halo-wearing cherub riding it like a particular nut in a movie I forget the title to.. That blares 'halleluja' as per the holy hand-grenade of antioc when it goes pop.

I'd like to see a scene where Jesus goes into the temple, sees the money changers, and instead of fashioning a whip, pulls out two pair of nunchaku and starts kicking ass like Bruce Lee, with all the money changers coming at him like so many Kung Fu extras, ending the scene with the trademark reverse fist to the face and accompanying vocalization.  Oh yeah, and throw in the bad lip sync movements and overdubbed speech for the dialogue parts.  I know that's a bit irreverent, but it would be great for a tongue-in-cheek comedy.  In fact, I think a Kung-Fu gospel movie would be pretty sweet.  You could even throw in Ninjas at some point, where I don't know exactly, but it needs some ninjas (but they have to be Jewish ninjas).  Mel Brooks ought to make this one.

And now we're hopelessly  :offtopic:

Aye, we seem to be having hosting difficulties, Phoenix is working on that.

In the main time, you can download the skinpack here (http://www.tabun.nl/tmp/gen/zzz_skin_update_pack.zip).

I've added this to the Central server's generations directory as well, so you should be able to see these on both Central and Euro when playing.

We were playing for over 2 hours, about 4 hours ago.

And we played for an hour or two on the US server Saturday, 9 pm.  We had a new player there too, and we had some good fun.

Your servers dont work, I get a bad IP error when I type the IP in and cant find any servers when I try the server browser.

Title: Re: Strogg Machinegun (2) Skinned
Post by: Phoenix on 2006-07-18, 03:40
If the servers don't work, how are we all playing then?  As of right now, both Euro and the US servers are up and running fine.  I can connect to both and my ping is stable.  Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere?
