Honestly I'd like to know if the game has been scrapped/completely redone and how many times...

That and why I should care, I haven't played any of the series and it looks like a standard issue FPS...

You should care because Duke Nukem 3D was a classic, and classic enough that, after being AWOL for so long, people still want Duke.  Doom brought action.  Duke brought humor, one-liners, and a lot of tongue-in-cheek stuff into the mix.  There were serious firefights galore, but there were also all sorts of gags and secrets, and a nest of easter eggs, too.  You could interact with or at least break damned near anything in the world, which was impressive for a sprite-based shooter at the time.

Now as for the character, Duke IS a character.  He's not just the cookie cutter "nameless, faceless marine".  He's a womanizing, tough-as-nails, American hero who (originally, in the first Duke Nukem) got pissed off because all he wanted to do was watch some TV and alien scum decided to invade, so it was time to go kick ass and chew bubble gum, but he's all out of gum.

I'm just hoping this isn't another example of a nice preview going up in smoke like the last one.  Will Duke finally come out of retirement?

I can't help but feel as if you just described the basic plot of They Live! One of John Carpenter's few true classics, for sure.

OOOoooOOOoo... I can't wait! Hopefully this will go on to be a game instead of another disappointment.

Shit they should giv out blowjobs for the people that have been waiting a decade for this game, or make it a 500+ hour universe sized game that beats every other game in terms of replayability and moddability...

Uhh... well Duke 3D did have strippers... if that helps you.  :surprise:

So that's why Doom 4 is gonna be out someday.

Although iD and 3d Reamls have been fighting the "who can make the best FPS" battle, 3d realms seems to have lost since a long awaited sequel is going out just recently and because in Prey the graphic motor was the same that the one in Doom 3.

But screw it anyway, Duke is my second favourite character only being defeated by Caleb from Blood.

but some time ago you said that you hated duke because a duke nukem's easter egg was a dead UAC marine or something like that and because he only battled the alien for the babes and stuff.

why your mind shift?

Well, this is an interesting development:

Thoughts?

Ahhhhahahaha.. with how Duke Forever has been going for the last 10+ years, I won't believe that until Valve themselves come out and say something. However, what I WILL believe, is that Valve will release all of the previous Duke games through Steam starting on the 18th.

I honestly can't see how everyone still gets a huge boner over duke nukem stuff...

But then again I've become quite the cynical, jaded gamer anymore.

I never understood the like of Duke Nukem myself, even back when the game was new. Then again, I was.. and still am.. a huge Quake nerd. So I was busy playing that a lot at the time. I still never played Duke 3D.

I did, however, play the original side-scroller Duke Nukem games. They were fun, but Contra did it all better years before on the NES.

I also thought it was amusing that one of Duke's most famous lines was a misquote from an 80s movie called "They Live".. but that was pointed out earlier in the thread by VampyrA.

Okay... I know I'm gonna regret saying this but...

After seeing that trailer, it looks like a game I would buy and try out.

It actually LOOKS like it uses something that is severely lacking in today's market filled with WW2 realism filled bullshit,

MOTHERsporkING IMAGINATION!!!

I hadn't seen that particular trailer.  Having played Duke3D, there's definitely some stuff I recognize, like the football stadium fight.  It does look pretty good.  I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Well nothing is for certain yet regarding duke, thought the rumors claim valve bought the source code and other duke related stuff, so it might happen, it might not! Guess we will find out pretty soon thought..or not at all! :)

So... It's 061810, and I'm still waiting for Blondie to show up.  I guess Valve was either taunting us, or the whole Duke screen shot was a hoax.

Perhaps "Duke Nukem Forever" was a trick title to simply keep people guessing until the day they died, and 3DRealms is amused at all the PR they get for a nonexistant game, and periodically produce an updated chunk of what could be, but they're too lazy to make. lol

There's not a mouse of keyboard to be seen anywhere during that demonstration. I guess Gearbox is going to release another game plagued by console-itis? That is assuming that this is ever released. :P

Nope theres PC action too.

"BTW, Duke was running on PCs at the hands-on kiosks. Woot, go PC! Not only is Duke apparently very bloody, but now that he's out of retirement he's got a lot to say in the classic humour department. "

Borderlands was released on the PC as well (by the same companies).. ..and it's not bad, but you can tell that it was primarily designed with a console in mind and pretty much ported to the PC unchanged.. hence, console-itis.

Yeah, borderlands gets a little laggy at times, and the mouse control is a little shifty if you turn up AA, but I for one love it! :)

Go, duke, go!

Exactly. Gearbox has already made me very suspicious of their commitment to the PC with Borderlands. It was a fun enough game, but it suffered in a lot of playability departments from its obvious console roots.

Not all console ports are bad though.  I enjoyed Legendary, which had checkpoints and got horrible reviews, but it was quite fun, and the newer Wolfenstein was pretty good, despite checkpoints and the regenerative health scheme.  We'll just have to wait (some more) and see I guess.

I did really enjoy the new Wolfenstein. I thought that it was a little too linear, given the central HUB areas, but otherwise found it to be entertaining.

That said, I could not get my mouse sensitivity set anywhere near high enough. I had to struggle through quite a few parts of the game because the mouselook was extremely sluggish. I'm not the only one I've talked to to have this problem either. I'd imagine that stems directly from it being a console port.

Wolfenstein was one of the prettier games I've seen in quite a while. The old Doom3 engine really shined with the amount of atmosphere they put into the levels.
