Title: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Jaq on 2009-02-28, 17:45
Hi guys,

Last time I was here was um... 2004 maybe? I managed to change time zones since then.
After playing around with Quake Live I remembered the fun with Generations Arena.

Do you still play forum games? I've been checking the servers out every now and then but all I see
are three bots running around on the euro server.

Would be great to frag a bit in good company again.

I believe there are still forum games managed, thought due to my work i rarly have the time to attend them to myself :(

The schedule has not changed, but player participation has been low lately.  I've been fairly busy myself, and I've been trying to spend a bit more time developing for Gen and less time playing .99f, so I may or may not drop in to play depending on what I'm doing.  Usually if I drop in it will be closer to 10 to 11 PM.  It's hit or miss on who might show up, but here's the schedule as of right now:

Euro Forum Game:  9 pm CET (3 PM Eastern US)
US Forum Game:  9 pm Eastern (3 AM CET)

We had three servers running for a while, but Fourier has been working on changing hosts so any US games will have to take place on my server for the time being.  I have three bots running around on my own Generations server to provide company until people drop in to play.

Glad to to see you're still around!

So the times would translate to... noon and 6 PM in PST.
I'll try to drop by for the Euro game tomorrow and bring a friend along.

Also, let me know if you need any help with audio production for Generations.
I have a Pro Tools rig and would be glad to contribute.

Whoops, I left out an important detail.  The times listed are for Saturdays.  That's no reason some of our Euro gamers couldn't drop by Sunday for a game.  Scal, Kingu, Alucard, Tab... care to give Jaq some company?  ;)

It would be nice to play on euro with someone again.

I just don't have time for quake or much else these days, nor do I have the extra 20+ to throw at a server for the time being.  I know that might seem stingy, but for the time being I'm trying not to spend even a dollar on something that isn't a necessity.  Things will probably change, but since I said I'd have an update in month, I figured I'd give an update.

We were there, trying to play some 1 on 1.

Trying, as we both got high pings on the Euro server (~190 from Poland, ~270 from US).
I hope the US server will work better for us on Saturday.

See you there!

Oh, PS.
I'm having some sound problems on Gen only. Base Q3 is fine but Generations has all sounds at high speed and high pitch, as if the sample rate was mismatched or something. I tried changing between 11 and 22Khz but no luck. Any tips on that one?

Hmm, give a shout out the next time someone wants to play Gens on the Euro server again. I haven't played in ages and it would probably be fun to give it a shot again. I wonder if I can still hit anything..

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Phoenix on 2009-03-03, 01:47
If nothing grabs my time, I can try to drop by the Euro server this Saturday as well.  Regarding the sound.... that's the first time I've heard of this.  All our sounds use standard .wav formatting.  What sound hardware do you have?

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Jaq on 2009-03-03, 01:49
It's an iMac, so it has an AC97 codec or something.
I don't have this issue with Q3 or RTCW. I'll try dumping their sound configs and compare Gen's settings
but other than that I'm not sure what else this could be.

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Phoenix on 2009-03-03, 02:53
Hmm... interesting.  If it continues, see if you could find out what sounds it's doing it on.  There's a cvar called s_show which will print sound information as sounds are played, so if it's a shotgun blast, or a rocket explosion, etc, you can see the name of the sound file.  If it's a formatting issue we can check it out from there, say, if it's happening specifically on sounds recorded at 11 KHz or 22Khz, etc, once we know a few specific sounds to check out.  Let me know what happens with the .config comparison first.  If it's just a cvar that's out of whack that would be the quickest way to find out.

I'll be sure to drop by the server on Saturday if I'm not working.

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Jaq on 2009-03-03, 06:48
Ah, got it!
The sound issue was actually present, I just didn't notice it since I didn't go past the menu in vanilla Q3.
Anyway, it's a OSX issue. The audio device was locked on 48kHz and simply changing that to 44 in the "Audio MIDI setup" fixed all sound problems.

'Ashen-Shugar'. We're both from Warsaw, just as you are, seeing from your profile.
Looks like we might have quite a few people playing on Saturday. Looking forward to that.

I'm going to do my best to get some Euro frags in tomorrow.  If I can remember to do so I'll try to get some demos if we get a bunch of players.  :doom_love:

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Phoenix on 2009-03-08, 04:00
Ashen and Jaq both had connection problems, and nobody else showed up except for Kingu and myself.  We played some 1 on 1 games for about two hours and had a blast falling into the void over and over.  Boot, Tab, Alucard... everyone else, we missed you guys, and you missed some fun!

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Jaq on 2009-03-08, 04:09
Gah, Comcast is killing me! I have a slower than usual and a very unstable connection even outside of Q3.
I tried your server, Pho and I my was around 200 with interrupts.  :wall:

I'm surprised Ashen had connection issues too, especially since we have different ISPs (and he is in Europe).
Well, I'll keep pushing them to do something about the connection and hope to see more of you next week.

Perhaps others will combat their shyness and join us.

My bad, I stood you guys up again. Not due to shyness though, I'm afraid -- I had unexpected visitors... (which was good, but not for getting back to Gen's..)

Hallo everyone!
I am very new to generations arena though i read about it before but a few days ago i found this map: http://www.lvlworld.com/#c=mSearch&i=2062&d=20%20Oct%202009&m=All&p=review and it made me want to give it a try and i think it is great! - Both map and mod i mean ;)
Can't wait to get some online play against human players!
I hope Return to the Entryway is already added to the servers - did not check that yet by mapvoting.

Only "problem" i got with generations arena is that i have to writeprotect my config because if i don't the next time i start generations arena it loads a totally new config with the first time start up of q3 running. When i started it the first time it took the settings from my q3 config. Maybe there is some interference with other mods settings i got in my config (defrag, cpma, runequake).
Another thing is that i can't load nightmare bots when playing offline. I thought /addbot sarge[5] would do it for example and even if i chose nightmare bots in the server main menue they always are loaded hardcore.

To sum it up: Thanks to everyone who helped to develop this mod!  :slippy_thumb:

It's sad to see so many good mods are suffering a lack of players like http://www.worldofpadman.com/  - that's where my avatar comes from btw.

What i did like most is the option in generations arena to spawn as a differrent class everytime you get fragged - only played this against bots but it was a lot of fun.

Mayhaps I'll try to pop my head in, I'm stuck on Ubuntu right now until I can get me a copy of 7...accursed money! Hope I can get this runnin...

I know Gen .99f works under Ubuntu.  I had been doing some testing with Kubuntu a while back, but I've not updated since Breezy Badger.  If you can get Quake 3 working, Gen should work too.  :slippy_thumb:

After 5 years trying to convince someone, I finally made it, and (not so) forum games live on, randomly few times a week, on Euro, with 3 - 4 players so far.

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Phoenix on 2010-04-07, 16:48
I will have to attempt to participate in this Euro gaming that you speak of.  When do you usually play?

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Kingu on 2010-04-07, 22:10
Well most of time it is not set date, but i'll try to gather them tomorrow around 20 euro time.
And will post here if some spontaneous gather occurs.

I may have to peek in and join the fray. Would be an interesting way to return to Generations, is jump into a game with a  few other players.

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Kingu on 2010-04-10, 01:25
Well if not set time that I'll try to post about, we usually play from around 20:00 to midnight sometimes, Polish (http://"http://www.world-time-zones.org/europe/poland.htm") timezone.
So if you are passing by check for spontaneous activity.

As we use to play AvP2, and I didn't managed to suck few people into Gen, at the pretext of relief from looking for aliens in the dark corners of celling, looking for predators shoulder canon indicator, or just desperate motion tracker, beeping.  :P

I can post some demos if you like too(and tell me when i could upload them), it really reminds like that 3-5 years later when we all used to play.  :!:

Well a little misfire on timezone address: Polish (http://www.world-time-zones.org/europe/poland.htm) timezone.

Maybe I'll be able to join in for a few frags, too. I'll keep an eye on the time (GMT+1 for me, too) :]

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: ReBoOt on 2010-04-10, 21:56
Well easier if you write GMT+1 or CET (Central European Time) and i belive thats your timezone over there in poland ;)

Well i was writing it at almost 3 in the morning, and to easily check what time is left.

I made it! Missed Phoenix, but joined up with Kingu & friends. Actually played more rounds today than I have in over a year... 'tWas good. GG Kingu!

I have demos btw, but (unless somebody's interested) I won't upload them.

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?

I'm interested in that as always. [:

And in a spare time send that custom games votes. :slippy_thumb:

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Tabun on 2010-04-14, 01:04
Oh right, nearly forgot about that.
I guess I was wrong about simply being able to vote for a special custom config. Otherwise you'd just be able to set both the correct maps and settings with a vote for config "ffa_slipgate.cfg". Looks like that can only be done by rcon. You can still vote for the right genflags to change the available classes, though -- just look up the proper genflags in the manual on the website (don't know them by heart anymore, either!).

If you're looking to play a specific custom game, give me a heads-up, and I can set the maplist/config for you.

Here are the demos:
20100413_demos.zip (http://www.tabun.nl/tmp/gen/20100413_demos.zip) (7 Mb) - 3.5 maps, all my own PoV (It's been so long that I can't even list the actual map names!).

Title: Re: Forum games still alive?
Post by: Phoenix on 2010-04-14, 01:07
Sorry I couldn't stick around, but I had pressing matters that desired my attention.  Hunger tends to do that.  For some reason I was able to rail and hit with Strogg grenades, but with automatic weapons and rockets I couldn't hit much of anything except the scenery.  It's been a long time since I played with lag, and I sure felt it.  Good times all around though, and glad you snagged some demos!

We will probably, play today at some point in time.

Well same as above, today we will most likely gather up for gen.
