Title: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: J3E125 on 2011-08-18, 02:57
so after being a member of generations for small while now,i think i'm ready for a wishlist,so lets begin :doomed:

1.maps:A remake of Q1DM6 should be done,i know there is one but it's not too good because its not 99% true to the original.A final showdown map should be made for 2v2 deathmatch (just split the ctf version in half).
2.items:Not much here, though the strogg armors are not as cool as the originals
3.models.Remaking the old quake 2 models (not really as grunt skins) would real awesome.
4.game modes: a ffa clan arena would be awesomeeee, some kind of monster hunt mode could be epic, and team  elimanation(without the full arsenal and ammo+health)and some u.t assault mode,it be cool
4.5:campaign mode-ok here we go, bundle 32 maps (2 secret) into 4 episodes (1.E.S,2.Doom,3.Slipgate,4.Strogg)you could have people vote for their favorite maps per episode.it could also be played with 1-7 other people for co-op;also at the the beginning you can choose your favorite generation of all to play as. Oh and at the of some episodes you could returned to a Q1 style hub entrances

that should be it for my wishlist,it's more likely you wont put any of this gen;oh well.  :smirk:

Well, anyone can have a wishlist, but since you've posted it publicly I get to critique.  ;)

1.maps:A remake of Q1DM6 should be done,i know there is one but it's not too good because its not 99% true to the original.A final showdown map should be made for 2v2 deathmatch (just split the ctf version in half).
I have a directly-converted (non-releasable) version of Q1DM6 that I used for testing of Slipgate weapons.  A true-to-scale Q1 map is way too small and tight for Generations.  Our version of Q1DM6 is going to be sticking around for the foreseeable future.  As for Showdown... the map author would need to be contacted for that since it was made by someone that is not on our team.  We can't modify the map without permission since it belongs to someone else... but I would love to have a classic Showdown map for DM.  Had good times playing Instagib Q2 there.

Quote
2.items:Not much here, though the strogg armors are not as cool as the originals
There are some minor differences in the head area of the red armor, but otherwise they look pretty much the same to me.

Quote
3.models.Remaking the old quake 2 models (not really as grunt skins) would real awesome.
It would also be really time consuming, plus getting the animations completely identical to Quake 2 would not be possible owing to how Quake 3 animates models.  Yeah, I could force the code to make models animate like in Quake 2, but I don't really want to go back to "hyperblaster surfing" when I've been getting new third-person animation stances working, like Grunt actually throwing his hand grenade and holding the BFG10K correctly, etc.

Quote
4.game modes: a ffa clan arena would be awesomeeee, some kind of monster hunt mode could be epic, and team  elimanation(without the full arsenal and ammo+health)and some u.t assault mode,it be cool
Clan Arena - likely.  Monster hunt... well that's "Resurgence" and it's on indefinite hold while the rest of the mod gets done (might hit technical limitations).  UT assault mode... not going to happen.

Quote
4.5:campaign mode-ok here we go, bundle 32 maps (2 secret) into 4 episodes (1.E.S,2.Doom,3.Slipgate,4.Strogg)you could have people vote for their favorite maps per episode.it could also be played with 1-7 other people for co-op;also at the the beginning you can choose your favorite generation of all to play as. Oh and at the of some episodes you could returned to a Q1 style hub entrances
Let me fix the normal Q3 single player first, then we might look at a possible Gen Single Player mode... well after the multiplayer is perfect.

that should be it for my wishlist,it's more likely you wont put any of this gen;oh well.  :smirk:
As I tell everyone, I'm always open to ideas but don't get upset if I don't use them.  John Romero once said, "Design is Law".  It's about as difficult, too.  :)

hmm i do think i went a bit overboard with assault mode..hehe
ok as for the monster hunt it'll be more want then possible.as for the dm6 it should be played 1v1 but i was able grab an awesome one from lvl world, but cant get people to play.
Ok for the quake 2 models i dont have a clue about their animations, all they do is run and turn around as for jumping they move up.the armor may not mater although the Q2 one was cooler.and not much to say for editing showdown.
Finally, the campaign is what i want the most from the wishlist,i think my idea is pretty genius,i mean how awesome would it be ripping apart ogers with q2 machine guns or obliterating massive cyberdemons with bfg10k's i think this should be in a need list

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: ReBoOt on 2011-08-18, 22:02
Regarding the size on my q1dm6 remake the map has to be abit sized to be playable in quake 3 and generations arena, this is a common problem with all maps from quake 1, but compared to the original it's not that much bigger :)

Also there is no point in doing a direct conversion from the original (it's also not allowed to do that) we want the maps to look better, (that's the goal atleast! sometimes it's successfull sometimes not!) and not follow the original map like a slave!

Anyways thanks for your feedback and thoughts!

oh yeah i forgot it's copyright and you got shut down for that one time :smirk:
well then make the best damn DM6 remake ive seen (the dm6 in  generations is mediocre) :!: :doom_thumb:

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: ReBoOt on 2011-08-18, 23:09
Well i might have another go at that map and do some changes(did it around 2004 and it's also used brush primitives which is not supported in the new gtk radiant 1.5 series so i need to install an old version of gtk radiant and resave it as a non brush primitives and all texture coords will be lost if you do that *sigh*) but that will be an later project, want to get dm2 and dm3 finished first!

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist

well then do that first, then do dm6 :slippy_thumb:

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist

Ok I added some new stuff and perfecting the wishlist.
How about a modified ut assault that won't be exact or over the top limits but feel some reminiscence of it, there'll be 2 teams one defending the base and the other assaulting. Instead of destroying an object it could be a flag that would be captured somewhere in the base or back to the spawn point.
Here's another simpler gametype tactical dm or ctf.
It could take place in big maps with lots of players. two teams would normally spawn with a twist, your team has limited lives,(if a player dies they will lose a life and has to use another)and will have to eliminate the other teams lives until they lose, ammo will be limited and health is scarce.
One last gamemode is melee mayhem, players are stripped from their machineguns and boomsticks and forced to use melee weapons. To add realism adrenaline pumps in so they'll move faster and stab faster, adding to the fun random powersups are given to random players that could help or hurt them; could be turned into tag mode.(for stroggs give em the ground zero chainsaw if possible.):doom_thumb:
that's it for now guys so you in the forums! :)

Well, may I show my little wishlist, as with lack of Internet for a day i refreshed my Gen skills.
I hope to see "oldschool" game setting to see earlier than on full 1.0 release, and to give some brain to doom bots, so they don't try to "shot" me with chainsaw.  :!:
And/or to give them/us 5shells so maybe they use it, until it's done properly.  :ninja:

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist

Haha oh yeah rabid chainsaw doomer bots gotta love em! ;)

Doom bots will know how to use the chainsaw better.

My wishlist is to create a Duke Nukem class that uses Duke Nukem 3D weapons except laser trip bomb because it may be hard to code. (Possibly as an addon in future when 1.0 is released)
Here is the item/weapon placement:
Quick Kick - Gauntlet (starting weapon)
Pistol - Starting Weapon
Shotgun - Shotgun ; Shells box - Shells box
Chaingun - Machinegun (found if mapper puts a Q3 machinegun, also can be starting weapon with low/no ammo) ; Chaingun Box - Chaingun Box
RPG - Rocket Launcher ; Rockets - Rockets box
PipeBomb box - Grenade Launcher ; A Pipebomb in Grenade Ammo
Shrinker - BFG ;  Shrinker Ammo - BFG Ammo
Devastators - Lightning Gun? ; Devastator Ammo - Lightning box
Freezethrower - Plasma Gun ; Freezer Ammo - Cells Box
You can also quick qick while holding any weapon by an altfire command. (with text Mighty Boot Engaged)
Small Health +10 - 25 Health Globe
Large Health +30 - 50 Health Globe
Atomic Health (+50) - Mega Health (health won't decrease back to 100)
For small health globe, it can be a small green health box version of 10+ health.
Portable Medkit - Medkit (acts the same as Q3 medkit)
Steroids - Haste/Speed
Jetpack - Flight
Boots & Scuba Gear? - Battle Suit? (boots for walking in acid/lava and scuba gear for allowing to breath underwater)
Damage Amplifier - Quad Damage (This new inventory item is a DN3D mod, can you guess which mod? ;))
Night Vision Googles - Invisibility (both make you invisible and see in dark places as in a mod)
? - Regeneration
These are my thoughts. It is possible?

It is not possible to add anything Duke related into Gen.  Duke Nukem is a completely different intellectual property, which we don't have permission to use.  In addition, Duke is not an Id character.  It would be outside the focus of our project.  Besides, I think Duke's ego is too big to fit in our code.  8)

"It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum... and I'm all outta gum." Hellz yes! Duke whould be awsome but as pho said Dukes ego wont fit the code ;)

I'm still waiting for that Commander Keen class...

:P

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist

Keen whould just use his pogo stick and jump the code to oblivion so that wont happen! :(

Besides, Keen was obliterated four times over in Doom 2.  I don't think he'd last too long in the Arenas. :doomed:

A doom 3 class would be pretty cool but i doubt the soul cube would be possible to reproduce.

I don't know about the gameplay mechanics of the laser trip bomb, but, just going by your description alone, I assume it's something you throw and whatever it lands on (even the ground?) it will create a laser normal to the surface it lands on.  You'd need to create the entity, store the origin and normal, and make the think function do a trace to see if anyone is intersecting it.  You could even fairly easily allow it to be detonated by rockets, plasma, and grenades that pass through it.

Of course you'd need a new trajectory (or you could just use the grenade trajectory), but phoenix likes to make everything as true to the original as possible, so I imagine there would be research work on what the actual trajectory was (is duke open source?) and possibly more (like what he had to do with doom for projectile movement).

Anyway, I thought it's a fun idea for just a general mod, I would throw it into q3au if I still played q3.

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: Phoenix on 2011-08-24, 10:39
Laser trip mines would be easy to code.  It would be thrown like a grenade and attach to any solid surface.  It would just save the surface normal as a "forward" vector and run a trace every server frame along that line with the MASK_SHOT clip mask.  If the trace clips something that can take damage (a player usually) then it spawns an explosion at the origin point of the trip mine entity.  Basically it would be a Q3 prox mine with a linear trace function for a think function instead of a radius scan.  Probably take less than an hour to code that since the functions are already present in one form or another.

Yes. It will also feature a new class: Braid. You don't get weapons, but you can change and reverse the time(scale) of any game.

Yeah, forget "Bullet Time", Gen will have "Laser Time"!  Sure, it may take three hours to actually move a single step, but just think of the cool factor of being about to plan your attack, order pizza, take in a movie, download some furr... er, "artistic nudes", shop on eBay, then come back and have the enemy right in your sights!  It'll stand the industry on its head I tell you!  :smirk:

Hahahahah, thats funny! :D I have also been thinking of Microwave Expander, the new weapon in Atomic Edition. I wonder how will work in Generations, I imagine how the players will grow and explode when they get killed by that weapon.

Talking about potential new weapons and classes, what about painkiller, the spiritual successor to Q1?  I loved the weapons in that.  Stake-nades, eletrified shurikens, and of course the painkiller itself.  Without the code, it would be difficult to create a simulation of those weapons in Q3, though. :P

I am only wanting Duke Nukem class as an addon because it may be easy to create. It also has a model created by someone that looks like Sarge so you don't need to create one, I don't remember the download link and I am not sure for other classes but Duke could be easy created, this is just my idea. Also for those who don't know what Atomic Edition is, it's the official addon of Duke Nukem 3D that adds an 4th episode (containing new monsters, new weapon: Microwave Expander and fixes many bugs that were present in original version of Duke 3D)
Of course that the Duke class would be in a separate pk3, it doesn't need to be included dirrectly in mod.
This is my only wish, I can't think of something else.

Plutonium Pack was an expansion episode for Duke 3D.  Atomic Edition I believe included this, plus had the most recently patched version of the game.  I have the Kill-A-Ton collection, which has Atomic, plus Duke It Out in DC, as well as a whole bunch of extras, like level guide, Duke 1 and 2 (the old side-scrollers), Duke! Zone, etc.

Speaking of which, I like the female Q2 skins which were eventually released in the Gen model pack. Any chance of a male counterpart to this set making it to a future version? There is a Nightops already floating around the net.

My wishlist? I'll try not to throw anything up that's completely out of the realm of possibility. At the same time, I do realize that some (most?) of these suggestions probably have no place in Generations. :P

  • Cyber Demon player model for the Doom class.
  • Female Slipgater, like Jaeger?
  • Grenades that are effected by different gravity settings. I want me some Ziggurat Vertigo!
  • Similarly, grenades that shoot different in water. I imagine them as being kind of "floating" underwater, almost akin to a lower gravity setting.
  • Grenades that are effected by jump pads.
  • Projectiles that travel through portals as a player would? Rockets and such, not hit-scan stuff.
  • DM Flag for a "vampire mode" where injuring another player adds to your health.
  • DM Flag for "exploding ammo", making ammo boxes explode after receiving so much damage. This could be just a regular 'ole explosion, or perhaps an explosion themed after the individual ammo types.
  • Arena lightning gun that discharges underwater. It's just weird not having it now that it's in the same match as the Shaft.
  • Newer lightning effect enabled for the Arena LG... It was introduced in one of the later Id patches, along with new plasma and rocket trails. I think it looks a lot better than the original lightning effect.
  • Newer plasma trails could be thrown in for Arena as well, though I don't think they make as big of a visual difference as the lightning.

And of course I want a full 1.0 release, with a Generations-themed singleplayer ladder to climb up through... oh, and Resurgence! Let's also throw in a "Blast Arena" gametype, as well as an "Elimination" type. :slippy_love:

Awesome, thanks Pho!

  • Cyber Demon player model for the Doom class.
While making an entirely new Cyberdemon model would be a lot of work, and impractical gameplay-wise due to its large size not aligning with the standard hitboxes, it occurs to me that a Hell Baron or min-Cyberdemon skin for Klesk in the vein of Tab's Death Knight skin would be a sensible compromise.

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: ~Va^^pyrA~ on 2012-03-23, 04:11
I don't think the Cyberdemon would pose any real logistical problems. You would simply scale it down to the size of a fairly average player. The Baron of Hell would be less apt since it doesn't have a built-in weapon... it would have to rather oddly hold guns.

Now if Klesk is going to get any kind of Doom themed skin, it had better be an Imp. :doom_thumb:

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: Gnam on 2012-03-23, 22:04
Uuum, wouldn't holding the guns in his hand like 99% of the other playable characters make him fit in more?

Also, how would you make an Imp skin for Klesk when Imps don't have horns on their heads? Also, there's already an Imp model for Q3.

Just sayin'.

I'd be all for a Chaingun Zombie model.. ..or skin. Just a shame that the best skinnable option for such (Biker) is an Earth soldier.

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: ~Va^^pyrA~ on 2012-03-24, 17:43
I merely meant that it would look more natural to have an armed Cyberdemon. Also, I think that the Cyberdemon is far more interesting to look at. To me, the Baron (and Hell Knight) always looked like a pretty generic demon. Of course, given their similar shape, it doesn't seem too far fetched that one would lead to the easier creation of the other. The Cyberdemon has a few extra pieces, so I don't think you could merely skin it to and from the Baron. Though perhaps you could used the "cleaner" outlines of the Baron/HellKnight as a base for a more intricate Cyberdemon model? Just thinking, of course.

Yes, there is already a very fine looking Imp model available for Q3. There is also a similarly finished Arachnotron and Revenant for that matter. There are also a couple of very high quality Strogg player models out there as well. If I recall, there is the Gladiator and the Iron Maiden. Of course, the problem with using any these is that Wirehead would first have to get permission from the original authors to modify them. Then depending upon how they were originally built, modifying them for the new animations system may not be the easiest task in the world.

I don't necessarily want Klesk to become an Imp, but I assumed that was the original intent given his assigned generation. Still, I think a serviceable skin could be possible. If you're really worried about the spikes, just keep in mind that they could be given a transparency with a new skin. You wouldn't even know they existed.

On the issue of skins... it wouldn't be too hard to make a "Grunt" enemy skin for Ranger. ;)

Again though, this is just flight-of-fantasy, "wishlist" material. It never hurts to toss ideas around, but I wouldn't count on any of them being used. Especially not when getting all of the vanilla Q3 models working is of a higher priority. I do miss being able to use Tabun's Enforcer and Guard models, too. Hehe.

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: scalliano on 2012-03-29, 03:05
My sole wish for Gen is a tier-based single-player campaign. 5 tiers - one for each class - plus a final tier which brings them all together before you go off to fight Xaero. Possibly throw in botfiles for the extra skins so the same characters aren't repeated too often. This way, the first match could be against Id, tying in nicely with the Gen backstory (see what I did there?).

Also perhaps anim2.cfg files for Pi and Fritzkrieg as a seperate download, maybe?

BTW there already is a Ranger Grunt skin (see attached). There is a Cyberdemon model for Q3, but it's not great.

I kinda doubt many have played the PS2 vesrion of Quake 3 but I wouldn't mind seeing bits of that implemented into single player Generations.

Namely the final "boss" fight where If I remember right you had to fight a few other opponents in different small arenas before teleporting to the final arena that had one of the vadrigar you had to kill...

Again that's if I'm remembering correctly...

I've never played Q3 Revolution on the PS2, but wasn't the Vadrigar just a re-skinned Klesk?

Maybe all the monsters should be a separate class. It would be a DM mode were it's the monsters of the id games vs. the 5 standard generations. The objective for the monster team is to achieve as many points(obviously) and along the way the monsters could be upgraded if enough points are achieved.

  • 0 Points: Light Guard: Fairly weak but fast and carries high quantities of ammo, capable of carrying multiple weapons.
Upgrade: 4 Points, turns into QEnforcer: Sturdy goon with decent fire power.
  • 8 Points: Imp: Well rounded average monster, can be deadly if gathered in groups.
Upgrade: 12 Points, turns into Superior Imp: An enraged Imp capable of spawning Lost Souls.
  • 16 Points: Iron Maiden: Powerful with rockets but very vulnerable.
Upgrade: 20 Points, turns into Ogre, slow moving tank.
  • 24 Points: Mutant: A fast and devastating foe with weaknesses.
Upgrade: 28 Points Fiend: Fastest monster out there, can give a real thrill.
  • 32 Points: HellKnight, an all-around foe, very powerful.
Upgrade: 36 Points Baron of Hell: A near unstoppable spawn of hell.
  • 40 Points: Shambler, rocket consuming electric abomination.
        Upgrade: 50 Points: Cyberdemon: Nightmare.

That would be awesome, but being realistic, it'll take ages to model and animate, most will end up being skins. Could be used as an Invasion type mode from UT2004.  :doom_thumb:

That would be pretty neat, actually. Probably way beyond the scope of the mod, but neat nonetheless. There was a "Life Cycle" mode in the Alien vs Predator game that this reminds me of. You'd start out as a facehugger, impregnate another player to become a chestburster, eat to become a drone, then mutant into more specialized castes until you eventually became the Queen herself. Of course, you could become a Predalien as well, but they weren't as easy to catch as humans were while a facehugger.

How about I make a simpler request? The ability to color Doom's outfits via the rail colors, similar to have Ranger's skin is currently setup. It seems like that would be a far more elegant system than simply having a bunch of Doom reskins to select from. Actually, it would be nice to be able to assign custom colors independent of class. Maybe I want my Strogg rail to be a different color than my Arena rail, for example? Of course, that may not be feasible for all I know. ;)

Colors can be assigned to classes via their own config, that hold weapon key bindings.
I did classic selection of crosshairs that way too.  :doom_thumb:

color1
color2
cg_drawcrosshair

Using "color2 0" can even make doom plasma "classic default" color, with saving difference for anyone else selections.

Hm, a good idea Kingu. I could only manage to either turn the colors on or off through the class configs though. O_o

I'm curious though, what do you mean by classic crosshairs?

Title: Re: Generations arena wishlist
Post by: Kingu on 2012-04-07, 23:10
I take default crosshair from original and set closest available crosshair from available in q3, or take some imagination if there was no in original game.

Slipgate/quake 1 it was actually add sing/letter +, cg_drawcrosshair 1
Strogg/quake 2 it was similar but without center piece, cg_drawcrosshair 2
Quake 3 empty circle with dot inside, cg_drawcrosshair 4
Doom had none but you need some indicator for long chaingun sniping so i took dot, cg_drawcrosshair 5
Earth also had none, but his main weapons are gatlings he needs rough indicator of bullet spread so i use filled circle with dot, and surprisingly it matches with it more or less, cg_drawcrosshair 3

And some original sound taken from my collection of above games, with some twists like q2 railgun being makrons railgun, and single gatling taken from team arenas gatling.

I like it! I'm going to play with my crosshairs set up like that for a while. Seems fun so far. :)

Far from it.

TBH I'd love to see the PS2-only maps redone for Q3. That final map in particular ("Final Resting Place") would make a great duel map with some item optimization.

The PS2 Quake 3 campaign was way better than original, I definitely liked their try at rpg style. The max evolved Doom guy was epic.

Any photos of the Vadrigar then? I can't seem to come up with much.

I wouldn't mind more maps, especially semi-official ones. All of the Dreamcast maps can be had one way or another. They are actually among my favorite 1v1 levels. Most of the newer Quake Live maps can be found converted over as well. I certainly wouldn't complain about the few new maps from Q3 Revolution... or Quake Arena Arcade for that matter.

Some of the Quake Live maps are actually Q3A maps that have been adapted and included in Quake Live.  Many can be found on the LvL (http://www.lvlworld.com) site.

Of course I know some of the more popular ones are older retrofits. Blood Run, Aerowalk, etc. There were a couple that I hadn't seen anywhere else though. The Asylum, Quarantine, etc.

Actually, I prefer some of the changes made to the vanilla maps even. The only downside is those pesky ads everywhere. They really kill the mood.  :)

Here's a video, this is the only good thing I could find of Vadrigar:

I'd love remakes from the Dreamcast, XBLA, and PS2 versions. The QAA for xbox had some great maps; Hazmat and Catalyst were chaotic.  :doom_thumb:

Cool. Definitely not a reskinned Klesk then, lol. I don't know if I really like the way the Vadrigar looks though. There's something about the style that rubs me the wrong way and seems little out of place. Oh well :\

Definitely agree with with you, I thought Vadrigar seemed mostly cool all around, but the face area was very unattractive.

Also worthy of note is that Reaper and Mistress are unlockable characters in Q3R (course on the PC you can just download 'em, and one of its levels is in the EA map pack as EADM6).

Interesting on having to fight the Arena Master.  I hadn't paid any attention to Q3R since it's on a console.  I do love the aiming difficulty inherent with the PS2 controller.  That would be an easy twitch-shot on the PC.  :P

I recently re-played parts of the PS2 game, My memory is as accurate as I said nevertheless I find it interesting that the actual final fight is after you kill the vadrigar by the way, weren't the vadrigar a species or a group of people, not a single person?

Yeah, so that confused me when I got to the final part. Maybe there should be a Q3 campaign where you kill vadrigar with cool weapons and featuring cool monsters.

I thought you can fight him on the XBL version of Q3. I might have to get it to see. I've been reluctant to get it. Mostly because I play Generations. But it's worth a grab if it'd help. But I don't think I'll be able to grab pics off it though.

I spent some time playing the game, I got to the ending, it was Xaero you fought, then when you beat it, it gave you a different ending than the original.

Also, there was "side" levels you could do, one of them was called "Generations". I'm pretty sure it was hinting at the mod, I was very surprised when I played it.  :surprise:

You are.  The PS2 version features a singleplayer mode called Skirmish in which everyone has a limited number of lives and enemies must be faced, one-on-one, in their own mini-arena.  I loved that gametype but sadly, no other shooter has replicated it.

Also, there was "side" levels you could do, one of them was called "Generations". I'm pretty sure it was hinting at the mod, I was very surprised when I played it.  :surprise:

Spork, really?  God, I wish I could say I had a hand in that but no, I didn't.  I just did some brief certification and multiplayer stress-tests on the title.

But back on topic, much of what I would like to see in Gen has already been implemented or is at least planned.  If I really had to dig, I would say the aforementioned Skirmish mode as well as another mode from Quake 3 Revolution called Possession.

Possession is a gametype in which a flag spawns somewhere in the level (usually at a power-up spawn) and a player must possess the flag for a set period of time in order to win the match.  I believe the time held is also cumulative making for a very focused and very messy free-for-all.  (There is also a team variant for Possession but that's kind of missing the point in my mind.)

Skirmish would make for a much better variant on tournament mode but I have no doubt that coding such a thing for multiple players would be a nightmare.

I say it'd be better simply because it would mean everyone can play instead of everyone watching two people fight.

This is based on the old Q1 mod called Qball.  This later evolved into Catch the Chicken.  Similar concept all around.  Whoever holds the Qball, chicken, flag, whatever, cannot attack or is restricted to a melee weapon.  Points are only scored while holding the item in question.  I have planned for a while to implement a Qball-style game mode, along with one-flag CTF and possibly a few others like Clan Arena.

I loved the Catch the Chicken mod, especially because of its added sounds and the little feathers that gave away the carrier's position. Good times were had by all.

Ah, I didn't realize it was patterned after Qball as well.  (I have the mod but I've never had an opportunity to play it.)  I think Possession differed in that the player holding the flag could still fight back but I would be fine if he or she could not.

I think Possession game mode was also on Skulltag. It was a green rock which if you picked up, you had to hold as long as possible without being killed however the price was you could not use any weapons. It's a bit similar to Catch the Chicken mod but yeah, good times playing this mod! Shame it wasn't fully finished, last version is 1.4 but I think there should have been more things like fixing railgun beam (it was always forced white even if was changed to other colors) and possibly new game modes like CTC Tournament and probably Capture The Chicken! :D
CTC Tournament would be like normal Tourney but with chicken added in and Capture the chicken would be red & blue chicken instead of flags, much like CTC Team Deathmatch but without scoring points.

Personally, I'd love to see a straight-up Possession mode as it appeared in Q3R. It's a shame so much ace stuff was wasted on the PS2.
