Title: What's left
Post by: J3E125 on 2011-08-30, 04:12
I've been wondering for awhile, what is left in production. I believe that all important things should/have been made already. I'm guessing the little things are being done; unless having little time prevents you from doing anything.(I'm sorry if I get you frustrated/tIcked)  :doomed:

Depends on what you mean is left? about generations?
If its about generations it's simply done when its done! but it's getting closer...

unless having little time prevents you from doing anything.

That usually is the problem.  O_o

ReBoot:no I'm not saying when it'll be done, just what's is left.

Pho: eh, out of all mods this one takes the longest time; since you've had a beta, I'll just say most things are complete  :doomed:

I can't think of a lot of completed Q3A mods, to be fair. Most died off shortly into development, if they even made it that far past the initial announcement and posting of concept sketches. Some of the more successful mods that went stand-alone, like Urban Terror, are still being worked on and patched if not completely redone and updated.

Wirehead is a small team trying to accomplish a huge amount of goals. The fact that they're still actively working on it, let alone made as much progress as they have, is simply amazing. We all want it to be finished, with full first-person animations, classic ladder tiers, Resurgence, and Blast Arena integrated... but y'know what? I'm pretty happy with what we have already.

That said... it would be nice to see smaller, more frequent releases. I know that there is a lot of new stuff in the beta that the general public doesn't get to play around with. I obviously don't have a firm grasps of the mechanics behind everything, but it seems like some of the advances could have made for great version updates instead of holding everything off for the coveted 1.0 release. Just my thoughts there though. ;)

K, im not much of a mod expert, you do make a point with some other mods,i guess you must accept what you have, even if it does not include maps improved multiplayer and animations :doom_thumb: (oh im not sad to point out if i do sound like i am O_o)

What's left?  Well, here's a short version from my to-do list:

Fix spawn protection glitch with hand grenades.
Fix Doom Combat Shotgun model animation glitch when running out of ammo.
Rework scoreboard-only team selection (for tourneys).
Check all third-person animations with time accelerator and haste.
Fix view blends not clearing when changing spectators.
Fix grapples with taunt animations.
Fix Earth's harpoon behavior when hitting a player with other grapples attached to him.
Check all widescreen resolutions.
Fix Earth decloaking bug with invis.
Turn off autodownloading by default.
Fix turbo-crouch behavior at base of ladders.
Fix /spmap and maplist load failure spamming the console.
Reduce the number of dynamic lights used with plasma and hyper when using time accelerator.
Fix strogg grapple getting stuck in movers.  Need to fix movers "eating" grapples.
Need sounds for grapples.
Add mouse button5 support?
Fix railgun trails vanishing through area portals.  This happens because event is through portal and player is not.
Fix Strogg godmode sparks not rendering bubble trails for bullets underwater.
Fix tourney mode not cycling players properly.
Teamchained items cause server to freeze if items are disabled (no powerups dmflag, etc).
Revamp quad sounds to be frame-based and not on muzzle flash.
Fix multiple out of ammo clicking on bots with Strogg chaingun, etc.
Code additional fire events into bot list of "things to be aware of".
Broken skins when default model forced if model is valid but not skin.
Fix "model cannot be used for this class" print message during demo playback.
Fix demorecord not terminating before level change.  Might rework it so it can be toggled for session or per map.
Switching spectators can cause the wrong armor icon color to draw, eg, blue armor on a Strogg Trooper after following a Doomer.

That's just part of the current bug fix list.  Here's some major stuff that needs doing:

Finish third-person animations on all included Q3 player models besides Doom, Sarge, Ranger, and Grunt. (major grind work)
Rework bot logic to work with Generations weapons so bots can lead targets properly, understand their weapons, etc.
Revamp menu system so that all settings can be done per-class through the menu system instead of relying on command console.
Rework the TA menu system so that the default Q3 single player tiers can function.

That's just from my own to-do list, and does not include any engine-side work.  ReBoOt is working on maps and I have some stuff he needs me to do that I haven't included here, and each new major feature coded in can produce new bugs.  I won't post the post .99f change/bug fix list, but that has well over 500 entries.

heh this backs up your statement "it's done when done" which is short for "we got a s**t load of stuff to finish", so you wont upset more people :doom_thumb:; just a hypothesis.

I don't think I want to see the long version of to-do list. :D

And I actually would, been here so long and even Diablo3 has been announced in mean time. Planlist could be updated more than 6 times a year, no  :doom_?:
