Title: Doom Items - III (Better Pimpin')
Post by: Tabun on 2003-02-07, 18:10
Ok. I'm done with all ammo types that will be used by Generations, for the DooM class.
For more appropriate pimping, here are some new overviews, including the latest additions: small cells pack, shotgun shells box and the pistol clip.

http://www.planetquake.com/tabun/pics/doom_items2.jpg (http://www.planetquake.com/tabun/pics/doom_items2.jpg)

Note: If the single rocket pickup (which you probably were looking for in vain) will get ingame, the standard doom rocket model will be used - and you should all know that baby ;]
Both cell packs,  the helmet and the health vial are shadered for enhanced prettyness.

Wow!  The shotgun shells in the large box are more detailed than the ejected Quake3 shells. :)  Oh, so is there not gonna be any small ammo pickup for the shotgun...like a little pile of four shotgun shells?

Also, I can't remember if this had been discussed before or not... Will there be radiation suits?  I'm fairly sure there has been some type of slime in all of the id games.  I know Quake2 had the enviro-suit to protect you against slime. And Quake3 has the battle suit. So, that's Doom 1 and 2, Quake2 and Quake3 that all had them, I don't know if Quake1 or Wolf3D (but Earth class is only loosely based on that anyway) had 'em cuz I don't have those games and I never played the full versions.  But they all protected you from ooze/slime and heat.  Or maybe the radiation/enviro-suits would be better utilized in ResurGENce.

Anyway, all of those skinned Doom models look awesome!  All of your textures that I've seen are better quality than in any retail/commercial game I can think of.  Most likely, id software couldn't have done a better job.

Hmm, would it be legal to re-skin the Arena weapons?  Well, even if it is, you probably wouldn't wanna spend your time doing that.  It's just that those weapons are so boring and bland-looking...the grenade launcher and railgun or alright, I suppose

I concur, excellent job tab, couldn't think of a better skinnisher than you... as for retail games with better pickups, honestly I don't think I've seen em... however I've played almost every 3d shooter there is so I could have one or two that have slipped my mind, but for my money I'm betting on yours :D

anyhoo take it easy and keep on keepin on!

Hollowpoint, Quake1 had a BioSuit ;)

* Tab bows humbly - don't make me blush
Thanks you guys, you make it all worthwhile ;]

As for what I'm doing next, I'm thinking Angst will want to skin some more earth stuff ;]
So the dog food bowl is pretty much done, just need to unwrap that. Maybe I'll skin one or 2 things for that set, but I'll see about that when I get there.

Nice models tab!

*ahem* Is it just me or does that not look like a bowl of dog FOOD, but rather something else?

Looks like dog food to me... after being digested that is.  :D

Tab, I think I have a plan on those Doom spheres.  I'll post the details in the private forum.  Excellent work on the models btw. :)

It's typical german nazi dog food :]
I had a bowl of it in my room for reference - come to think of it, it does smell a lot like shite.. oh well :]
The skin will make it more like canned food :]

It tastes and looks like shit so that the dogs will not eat it and get so hungry that they would attack the prisoners for food :)

An amazing and well-done job on those ammo boxes. Considering the original sprites are just blobs of pixels, it shows that you've put a lot of creativity in those models!

LOL!

Remind me to not ever post unskinned models on this forum again :]
Alright,  you've all made your point, it looks like shit - it has been said, it has been noted - I repeat -> it has no skin! It will have a nice german dog food skin, and it will taste like dog food and not like feces in the least, you have my word on that. Also, if anyone posts another reply about the suspiciously brown contents of the bowl, I will personally delete and or edit their message to something that will resemble shit quite a bit aswell.

Anyway: I edited the model, and this is what it looks like now:

On that note, Tab's work inspired me, so I decided to go back and remodel the Doom weapons to match the new style as well.  I think these look much better, what do you think?

Now just add some shaders to the cell boxes and make the lights pulsate :D
EDIT - I ment that in the ways of large animated gifs to show us

Post by: Tabun on 2003-02-10, 09:29
I'm sorry Devlar, we're trying to stay true to the originals, so they won't pulsate at all ;]

ok then... so like Doom will be able to water walk? Oh yea, and not look up and down! Guess that means Earth will lose the rifle as well... what a shame. :/

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Tabun on 2003-02-10, 19:36
earth will not only lose the rifle, flamer & mortar, but it will also be impossible to walk down or up any steps at all. We feel that this should make the game even more balanced than before!

Post by: Vadertime on 2003-02-11, 20:30
Do I detect wiseasses here? Who thought up this bullshit anyway? Yes it's all the old original stuff, and it sucks as bad as the old MSDOS graphics did back then. It's OK to be nostalgic but let's not bring back the crap that made the old stuff junk. I'm sure the guys at id would rather see the old stuff brought up to date than to see all it's limitations back in force.

I'm sure you can appreciate a little joke every now and then in real life, vadertime :] - loosen up old chap!

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Hollowpoint on 2003-02-11, 22:10
Will the earth food disappear off the plate, like in RTCW, or will the plate be eaten as well?

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-02-12, 00:17
I thought something looked funny. I can't believe anybody would go back to primitive, murky-goldfishbowl graphics just to be sentimental. I had an idea though, since quake3 arena has a Simple-Items mode, you could use those old pixelated sprites for the simple items. Neat idea huh? Please don't take out the Earth soldier stuff. I KNOW you had to be joking there. Sure the OLD wolfenstein didn't have mortars flamethrowers or sniper rifles, but who would want to give up the ability to BARBEQUE SOMEONE'S ASS. Even though that old game didn't have that stuff, GI's in the European theater sure did. The plate of food didn't look too bad but when I saw those pitiful blurrry screenshots it was just too scary. Also, I've noticed a possible problem. When my brother and I try to play Generations at home through our network cable, the past 4 or 5 times he couldn't connect to my server. It would try to connect on his computer and lock up or something while my screen would be fine. Could it just be his older machine with the voodoo2 card or could it be the BNC cable we use. Regular Quake3 Arena works fine. Any ideas? :)

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Tabun on 2003-02-12, 01:17
Exactly :]

Vader: please take the server connect / lockup thing to either the bug or the offtopic forum (if it is not a bug, but just a network prob) - I'm going to see to it a bit sharper that people stay at least on the general topic of generations items (even if we're joking :))
Anyone else, If you have a tip for vader, pray do not post it here, but in the offtopic forum too - thank you kindly ;]

Hollow: J.B. is a collector of fine german art (as I'm sure you know, considering how you were looting all those castles in Wolf3D!) - and this happens to be a very very fine german porcelain (kobayashi, anyone?) plate indeed. Needless to say, you'll pick up the plate, eat the food, and stash the plate away to keep as a souvenir :]

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-02-12, 06:43
Ok but you didn't say if you liked my idea or not. The old Doom sprites used for simple item mode. I read on one of these threads that somebody was working on the cacodemon. Any progress on that? It shouldn't be as hard to make as most of the others since it's a big tomato with horns and a mouth. I hope somebody puts a lot of care and effort into the pink demons. I always liked pinky.

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Tabun on 2003-02-12, 13:55
Ah, sorry, yes, I didn't quite take it seriously either.
If we'd use sprites for items, why not for weapons? why not turn off the lightmap lighting? remove curves from the map? make doom walk on water? (etc etc etc) - We've drawn a line at getting the characters to FEEL like in their original game-homes, but not look exactly like them.
For Earth the former is a bit tougher, since he's got a new arsenal too, so think of it as a wolf3d/rtcw mix for that matter.

Also, the Cacodeamon is not a tomato, but a big somewhat rounded floating.. facelike.. deamon thingy :] - with a damn impressively detailed skin so far (I don't know if it's animated or not yet, but that's a whole different matter entirely, and would take a huge amount of work too), pinky has about the same status as the caco, last I heard. Note: visit this site (http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/dragonspyre) to see the bastards.

Post by: games keeper on 2003-02-12, 20:13
tab are you sure the cacodemon is not a tomato cause im still in doubt .

I once saw a movie with killertomatoes ( dont know name anymore)
it had even ninja tomatoes in it :D
hmmm killing tomatoes :thumb:

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Hollowpoint on 2003-02-12, 22:46
Um, as far as I know the cacodemon is not on that site.  The demon, chaingunner, imp, revenant, arachnotron, and mancubus are though.  I think the Pain Elemental looks better than the cacodemon.

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-02-13, 22:01
Whoa, I didn't mean replace every damn thing with sprites. On quake 3 arena there's a game option that switches the spinning models with simple stationery sprites for people with slower older machines. That's all I meant but I sure as hell didn't mean turning generations into sprite based mush. Nevermind then, it was just a rambling thought. Granted the cacodemons have a lumpy knobby texture a lots of horns but they're still round and red. I meant the model not the skin. I'm sure putting that lumpy, rubbery texture on the model will be no picnic. I saw the demon on dragonspyre. It looked good but I remeber they're eyes glowing with a bright light. I guess it won't matter, they never sat still anyway. I've always thought they'd be cooler and scarier if they could jump. Imagine if they could reach up and grab someone's ankle on a ledge just like on the doom box. Too complicated I'm sure, and now I seem to be rambling. I'd best quit while I'm ahead.

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Tabun on 2003-02-13, 23:24
I realized you didn't mean it, but my exaggeration was just added to make a point - namely, that we won't be doing anything sprite-like in gen ;]
Not that I personally dislike the idea - it's just not for gen. What we could do however, is fix up some sprites, so that the people playing with said simpleitems option would be looking at something other than the default q3a sprites. But that's a matter for v.1 methinks ;]

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Phoenix on 2003-02-14, 06:29
Well, the simple-items mode right now DOES have sprites, it uses the weapon icons shown in the HUD when you switch weapons.  What we intend to do once all of the weapons are in a finished state is take uniform screenshots of each weapon in profile and use those as the HUD and simple items sprites.  We CANNOT use the original Doom sprites any more than we could use the original Quake 2 ammo boxes because that's a fox waiting to happen.  Besides, taking screens of our own weapons will make them higher-res anyway. :idiot:

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Tabun on 2003-02-14, 09:17
yeah, i wasn't proposing to use the originals, but indeed, renders of our versions -> sprites :]

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Chilvence on 2003-02-17, 01:25
The Jdoom model pack has spheres with all the polys facing inwards. in the middle is a head or eyeball. They always face the camera for rendering.

Title: Re: Doom Items - III
Post by: Vadertime on 2003-02-19, 00:22
Forget I ever brought up simple items. Now, back to the doom bassturds. I saw the ones on Dragonspyre's site. I even tried to download the pinky model but there was no way to download it. I just installed Doom collectors edition on my new 30gb harddisk and saw first-hand the shit that sucked in it when it was new. It's especially bad in Doom2 with those tall, towering levels that are too tall to fit on one screen. It's amazing the difference it makes to be able to look up and down, not to mention duck, jump, and swim. When Resurgence comes out will the monsters have any new tricks or will they be just like they were? I'd like to see some new post-dos era tricks. In your opinion, which is better, a pinky with bright, glowing eyes or two cavernous black ones? The one on Dragonspyre has two dark,  black eyes set far back in it's head. Has anybody seen the cacodemon anywhere? How about the Baron? I can probably make some models here at school using Xenon, but the problem is I'm not a programmer and I don't know if I could convert the xenon files to a usable form.  I made a round shield and a broadsword once, but they both got deleted when my school account was accidentally erased. B)
