Something to keep in mind with people like MLK and, say, Gandhi... Their methods only worked because they were more preferable to deal with. Those in power had already dealt with their contemporaries, who were often times violent in their methods. That makes a peaceful, intelligent speaker very appealing. Words don't mean much when there aren't consequences behind them.
