Lawsuits and efforts to fill popular p2p networks with garbage files took a bite out of mainstream file trading, and now the RIAA hopes to take the battle one step further. The industry is heavily shopping a "smart" filtering solution around Washington that can audibly recognize copyrighted songs and block them accordingly.

They can't stop this, cause if you ZIP or RAR the file, the filter can't do squat about compressed files.

GG RIAA, why don't you piss off even more people doing this?

They don't care about being popular, that's not their job...
It's true that it shouldn't cause too much trouble to just zip it, but still if it bothers pirats and the like that's some sort of succes isn't it?

You know, this wouldn't even be an issue if the record companies would actually promote quality bands instead of one-song wonders.  Here's my solution.

1)  Scrap the crap.  Learn what good music is, and promote it instead of the rubbish they're shoveling now.
2)  Pay the artists some actual money - not just these "super-stars" that are good for an album or two and no more.  Well paid people tend to stay a bit more loyal, and tend to be a bit more motivated to perform.
3)  Stop overcharging for a $0.30 piece of plastic.  Record companies can run the same profit margins as any other corporation.

This will never actually happen, of course, but I look at bands that have been around for 20+ years and have a loyal fanbase as opposed to the Brittney's and Spice Girls of today.  You don't have a problem with record sales for the old-school bands.  Why?  Their stuff is worth buying, and the fans know it.

Also, think of the artists that take music seriously (IE. they're not just handpicked by a couple of money-greedy manager-types, but they're actually performing in a professional manner - creating ART) - Most of the experimental bands I listen to have not only gained recognition througout the world via the P2P programs (soulseek in particular) but I can say that (in my particular case, anyway) most of those bands have SOLD more, because I bought their albums, after I discovered them illegally. Ofcourse, the better the artists, the better it turns out for them, which doesn't sound bad to me. Alas, I'm the last to say the public is capable of detecting something good, since most mainstream stuff out there is utter crap.. but still..

Ain't I the criminal? Boy I wish someone'd lock me up, I'm destroying the world here.

yeah you are a bad boy! but you are also right and so is phoenix...
a lot of bands and such only have 1 maybe two good songs on an album, and who wants to pay the price of about 10 songs to get 2?

I just think there's a reason for it. if there were only  great bands out there we wouldn't get a lot of new albums, which would mean the industri would be smaller and they don't want to be small so they try to make you focus on one or two songs. then you realize that you just bought some utter crap and you turn to downloading. Basically i think they are just shooting themselves in the foot and whining about it afterwards...

Downloading a couple songs  to see if the artist is good is like renting a game: Try it before you buy it.

I do a test, if 80% or more of the songs are enjoyable I go and buy it for the extra quality of a CD

I own 7 CDs, and most of the music I want to buy these days I can't since they don't have north american contracts. You try finding a Muse CD in Canada!
