Tabun, you might want to look into something that requires the first post or even response to be verified by an admin.  Although, you might want to just turn on admin activation of accounts at that point.

I'd say someone just dumped an upgraded spam bot on the net.  And... done.  All member registrations require administrator approval until we're sure the spam bots can no longer bypass the registration protocols.  I also took the liberty of cleaning out hostile links from the account profiles and signatures.

There's also the trick of disallowing the use of hyperlinks or image posting in the first (or first few) messages. I've always disliked that approach though: it doesn't stop the registering of non-user accounts and it's a hindrance to users proper.
