Title: Some new skins
Post by: Tabun on 2005-03-20, 05:16
Strogg fans: Good news!
I'm still at it, and slowly more nostalgic skins are added to the available selection. In a new release, expect at least the following:

Intresting face there, how did you do it? did you make it from scratch? any chance of a closer look?

Nope, didn't do em from scratch. This is the one time where I absolutely didn't want to go and create a ton of faces out of nothingness, so I did two things I never did before, for Gen:

1. I kept entire parts of the face as they were (actually, the hair mostly, and I traced and detailed Major's face, to get a good base to work from)
2. I photosourced. I took mouths, eyes and noses to create unique faces without spending ages on them. Jezebel's mouth is entirely hand-drawn, but the others are taken (and heavily edited) from photographs of Famke Jansen, Denise Richards and some little known black woman who poses on porn sites :]

Ofcourse. However, Google's Image search provides, not my unwavering craving for the female flesh, as you may well imagine.
Also, I have whipped up a quick skin for Jungle, since that seems to be another big favourite.

Well, I'm not as much of an artist as Tabun, but I'm feeling like contributing something to the game other than being a beta tester. I'm working towards getting all of the unused Q3A skins (most of them red or blue) into Gen, since I've seen a few requests for those floating around. As a result, I'm coming up with "characters" to represent those, rather than just calling them "arena"... and here's the first.

... in vQ3A, i use the Ranger model and the BLUE skin. Any chance of adding the Q3A BLUE and RED skins as selectable? If not, that's ok, but Slippy and Earth should get a few more skins. They feel the "weakest" on this department by comparison to other classes (especially DooM?). All things shown are yummy nevertheless ;) ...

EDIT: since new is also afoot on making skins, and still on the colored ranger skins from Q3A, could it be done a Ranger skin like Team colored in Q3A, but replacing the color of team by grey (worn-out-but-still-chrome-grey?)...

If you'd fully read my post, you'd have seen that this is in the works.

That's also being worked on. ;)  Sarge's old Q3A stuff will be shoehorned in, and I'm going to attempt multiple colors like we have for Doom and Grunt. In a way, Ranger has several skins already available, since you can change the color of his uniform. I know Tab's working on something, as well.

... i *did* read it, but after seeing your skin i thought your approach would be like it all time: modified and not exactly team colored skins, but rather a new composition. ;) Also, i've edited my post :p ...

Well, I really would like to change them somewhat, but the whole point of my little side project is to include the omitted/replaced Q3A skins. Changing them at all would be contradictory to that idea. By changing some colors for a "new" skin, however, I can call it a different character instead of just labeling them "arena" -- in this case, you have qgrunt, qgrunt_blue, and qgrunt_red instead of just arena_blue and arena_red.

As far as greys and stuff go, that's generally a no-no. Something like Tabun's Deathknight skin for Keel works out, because he colored it in a way that it's still quite visible. Originally, my Quake Grunt skin was dark brown and grey -- causing it to blend into several maps and create the situation that we countered with Bones by making the default skin fullbright (thank you, Phoenix, and now I don't even see him used! Woo!). There isn't a lot of sense in fixing the problem on one, just to recreate it on another.

This is a story about good ideas that end up sucking. I took a quick look at the Q3A red and blue skins for Doom, and compared them to the Phobos skin. At a glance, they look rather similar. "Great," I thought, "less work for me!" I knew a slight modification would have to be made for it be believable, though -- Phobos is a dark-skinned individual, and the skintone of the red/blue skins was rather pale.

So I whip open Photoshop, and finally get a right color... and realize that they're actually quite different. The Q3A red and blue skins have some parts from the Doom skin, some from the Phobos skin, and some that different altogether, so that idea went out the window.

But, at least I got to have a laugh at Doom's expense, for once. Meet Deimos.

Note that the Deimos skin that already exists has about the quality of a lice infested mule turd. If you want to claim a likely and obviously commonly desired name for a skin, make it good.

Tabun, any chance of you remaking the Red/Blue skins of major to be more like the original CTF skins the Female model had? They rocked compared to the new.

If the female skin those red/blue ones were based on gets remade, then that would be awesome. I can't think of any excuse for alternate red/blue skins for Major, so... great idea, in my opinion.

As for another skin named "Deimos," yeah, that exists. You can find that here (http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/skins/quake3/doom/deimos/deimos.shtml). It was the first Q3A Doom skin made available on Polycount more than five years ago. I had no idea it even existed until somebody else mentioned it, but it's a piece of garbage.

I tried finding an alternate name based on one episode of Final Doom beginning on a moon of Jupiter, but the only male name of any of that planet's satellites is Ganymede, and I doubt anybody wants to try to remember how that's spelled to change a skin in the console. Our overly purple Doomguy is named Deimos, and it's staying that way.

:offtopic: Hey, I'm a Quad God now.

Sounds like a very good idea, o'dium. I can't recall what they looked like exactly, but I'll see if I can find them somewhere (we're talking threewave, I assume?).
Those would be a LOT better than VQ3's red/blue skins, and easily replaced with a little work. I have to make one more type of custom female skin (see Cobalt for instance), and that could be next in line.
I'm also working on another fun project that, however adding less to nostalgia, is fun indeed.. and a tiny secret for now :]

Hey, don't look at me, Makou converted and coloured the QGrunt and Deimos skins :]

Thanks o'dium - those use the Cobalt base I was talking about, so they'll be a piece of cake once I get that out of the way.

Hehe, thanks Tab. Though you're obviously doing harder stuff than I am, here. :)

And it looks like I won't need to touch Major at all, now. ;)
