Title: Your Favorite Id Monsters
Post by: Phoenix on 2007-10-15, 03:56
It's easy to know who likes what Generation when playing, but what about the bad guys?  Which ones are your favorites, and why?

Is there really that much of a difference between Doom 1 and doom 2 monsters?

Doom Monsters:

Zombieman
Shotgun Guy
Imp
Demon
Lost Soul
Cacodemon
Baron of Hell
Cyberdemon
Spider Mastermind

New monsters to Doom II:

Chaingunner
Hell Knight
Pain Elemental
Revenant
Mancubus
Arachnotron
Arch-Vile
SS Nazi
Commander Keen
Icon of Sin

If felt there was enough difference between the two monster sets to warrant two poll entries.  Someone might not like the Doom II monsters.  Besides, my poll, my rules!  :doom_thumb:

Oh, I see, I didn't really think of the icon of sin or keen as enemies though, something more of a puzzle...

If I could pick more than one i would take D2 beside Q2.
And I'm wondering how it would be to swap weapons/heroes and play like that through that games.

Doom 2. Those damn Fatties (Mancubus), the dancing skelletons (Revenants), running naked guys (archviles) and the terribly annoying Burned Tomato (Pain elementals, that made a weird barking sound when you shot 'em) all rocked.

Since DOOM 3 is not a choice, I am going to go with the original DOOM.  I'm a sucker for the pinky demon.   :doom_love:  Cacodemons are also pretty cool sans how much damn life they have.

I guess my vote goes to DooM II. The more the merrier, and in the days of the DooMs, hordes still existed, too. I also really liked the realistic, plastic look of DooM sprites, in addition to the actual monster designs. The Mancubus (aside from its rather lame name) was my favourite (excellent death anim, too!).

I'ma go with DooM 2 as well, despite tech limits I think they're presented better than any other group, and cyberdemon probably pwns any other monster ID has made, even it's DooM 3 counterpoint.

Why not go with DooM 1 then? arachnotrons mancubi and archviles thats why dammit

I have to jump on the Doom 2 bandwagon as well.  I liked Doom's atmosphere a bit better overall, but the Doom 2 + Doom 1 monsters are just downright wicked.

Quake 2 comes in a close second to me.  I think it's because the Strogg have a great deal of personality to their sounds and animations, and overall look.

Wolf3d. Sure, there were only a handful of enemies, but they were enough to amuse me when I was a kid. Besides, DooM doesn't run as fast as Wolf3d in my 386, so I'd oftenly choose Wolf3d over DooM. However, my second choice is DooMII.

DOOM II. Without a doubt. UD's atmosphere was better (particularly if you played the PSX version which had D2's monsters on the harder settings), but the sheer variety in D2 makes it more fun IMO.

Lop: sounds more like you prefer the game, rather than its monsters.. Each to his own ofcourse, but do you really prefer nazi soldiers over imps and pinkies? :]

Quake 2 monsters were great in concept --although I do prefer hellish demons over biotechnological things-- but they were a bit too easy to deal with, too "stupid" to really work up any awe while playing, for me..

Quake, by far. The Shambler still remains one of the most fearsome creatures to ever grace a videogame, new or old!

Tab:  I just love the overall look and attitude of the Quake 2 Strogg.  I agree that damage-wise the Strogg are pushovers, but then I also remember playing Quake 2 in 320x200 software on an underpowered machine.  I don't think the average newbie of the day could have withstood fully-powered baddies with the hardware that was common.  I really do need to port my code into a normal Quake 2 .dll that makes the Strogg do player-level damage with their weapons.  I'll get around to it eventually I guess.

Vamp:  In the Quake 2 Generations mod, whoever did the Ziggurat Vertigo level goofed up.  One of the two shamblers up top actually spawns as a Strogg Tank Commander.  I've done this a few times where I've grabbed the invuln and got between Shambler and Tank and let the tank accidentally hit the Shambler.  Shambler doesn't like that, so he'll shoot lightning in return.  They'll continue to fight, and the Tank Commander pulverizes the Shambler every time.  To be fair the Shambler can't get in close to use his melee attacks since they're on two different platforms, but it's still interesting to watch the two monsters duke it out.

There's a similar situation on Grisly Grotto.  One of the Fiends in the castle courtyard spawns as a Quake 2 Mutant.  The mutant kills the fiend every time.

Well, the Shambler may not be the overall toughest of the Id monsters, but I still tread carefully around them to this day. Of course, they are far less dangerous if you get up close and simply avoid their melee attacks. My perspective is probably ingrained from Quake being my first FPS though. Coming up onto that first "white monkey", as we used to call them. Hehe. If nothing else, I find them to be one of the most interesting looking creatures.

Aye, you can kill them with the axe if your timing is good and you don't run out of room.  They're definitely dangerous though, no doubt.  Those melee attacks and even the lightning can make short work of a Quakeguy!

... Maybe you're right, Tab. But the problem is, I love both set of monsters equally! So, to take a decision, I was forced to choose between the ones who I enjoyed fighting against the most. In the end, I chose the Wolf3d monsters.

Hey there, Shambler, long time no squawk!  Aye, those blobs are a pain.  I've found that if you can rocket or get a grenade near them before they start bouncing they're pretty easy, but once they start hopping around look out!  Best thing I've figured out is run and jump towards one as it bounces so it goes past you, wheel around and shoot a rocket at the floor before it comes back.  The blast will hopefully do it in.  Otherwise, keep to the high ground and bounce grenades into them!

Being the big Q1 fan that I am.. it's only natural that I pick Doom2. Best enemies in a game by far.. Arachnatron taught me how to circle strafe, and Mancubus was just cool. Other favorites are the annoying Arch Vile and the awesome Chaingunner zombie (for obvious reasons).

Being a Q1 fan, it's also natural that I pick Wolf3d as a close second. Nazis are always fun to blow away.. Hans Grosse is just badass, wishing everyone a good day before turning them into swiss cheese. Hitler is just the icing on the cake.

Quake comes in 3rd.. the Fiend royally scared the bigeezus out of me when it first leaped across the room and smacked right into my face. Vores with the overly annoying purple spiked balls of doom, Shambler with the insta-hit lightning, and the lowly Zombie with the awesome description in the manual.. the Enforcer was a personal favorite tho, and is now forever immortalized in Gen thanks to Tab's awesome model and skin work. :)

Doom is 4th. Nice demonic enemies that fit the atmosphere of the game, but I feel they're not up to snuff when compared to the top 3. Spectres in dark rooms are hella fun tho.

Quake 2 comes in last. I'm not a fan of the bio-mechanical theme the Strogg have going.. but there are two notable exception. The Tank/Tank Commander are badass.. slow moving, heavily armed and armored machines of death. The unsuited Makron is also neat.. mostly because he reminds me somewhat of Shockwave from the Transformers. Makron has the railgun head, giving him a dull and lifeless feel.. much like Shockwave's single yellow 'eye'. The rest of the lineup is pretty lame and boring.

I love the Quake 2 enemies.  To me they have personality and the more military weapons are interesting to go up against, plus the Q2 environment has always been interesting to me.  A lot of Doom's enemies were all fireball throwers, and Quake had some shooters but a lot of melee monsters.  The most common shooters on the non-base levels were the ogres, and they seemed a bit overused at times.  Vores are just a pain.  Hate Vores!  Q2 tank and commander are pretty nifty, and remain my favorite Q2 enemies.

As for the Makron... I tweaked Q2 a while back so that monsters could inflict more severe damage with their weapons, up to player-level damage at maximum.  The Makron is actually tough on this setting because he shoots the BFG quite often, and a hit from the railgun is 150 points.  All the Strogg become very dangerous at this setting, but the Makron and Gladiators especially are the nastiest to get hit by, with any flying monsters coming in close behind them.  20-point blaster bolts from fliers are painful!

My only issue with Makron was that by the time you got to him you always had a couple of Quads and Invuls in the bag, meaning that the fight lasted about 20 seconds, tops. D'oh!

The Ground Zero boss was much tougher, but I'm not sure that he counts :P

Title: Re: Your Favorite Id Monsters
Post by: Phoenix on 2008-04-12, 14:29
The CD version of Q2 that I have, forget the release number, you had the ability to hoard multiple quads and invulns, etc.  That did make the Makron a pushover.  A later patch limited you to carrying one of any item, but still, with an invuln and quad handy, Makron did go down.  I like taking him on without the powerups, is more challenging, especially with the player-equivalent damage from his weapons.

The Ground Zero boss was actually a she, the Black Widow, and she had the nasty ability to match any powerup you used.  Ground Zero's enemy AI was flat out nasty compared to normal Q2.

I'd have to say DooM 2.  Above all, those biomech-demons have had more of an affect on my concepts and artwork than any other creature barring Cthulhu.

Well DooM and quake 1 all the way :) doom 1 and 2 the best fun there was to actually play coop 2 persons..actually i really liked the N64 version of doom..it was dark and scary hehe but as a downside no multiplayer support which sucked bad.
