Title: Attention to Wirehead
Post by: Xypher on 2010-08-25, 20:19
So, the forums are slow and IRC activity has pretty much dissolved.
Would you guys like to see this place jumpin' again or are you planning on keeping the present cool ambience? I would be willing to make an effort to draw some traffic, unofficially, but I can see it being difficult with the age of Quake 3. Perhaps an angle could be worked to shimmy our way into Quake Live searches?

I did mention about making a facebook page a while ago, but still never got it to work yet...   :p

I'm not worried about the level of traffic so much as just having a presence on the web and a means of communication.  A little extra pimping is never bad though.

Quake Live is, unfortunately, a bit irrelevant when it comes to Gen: Despite being a modified Quake 3 engine, its mod support is completely non-existent.

I realize that it doesn't support mods, however they are playing a very vanilla quake 3. There might be some interest there for something *a little different* even though we don't have ranking and achievements. The latter not being a bad idea post-1.0 perhaps?

Rankings I'm not a fan of for several reasons.  First, cheaters.  People always find a way to cheat and boost their stats.  That turns into a losing war to keep the process fair and defeat the cheaters.  People can use stats like a club as well, or instead of focusing on the fun part of the game they worry about their stats.  Now I'm not against local stat tracking, where people could keep track of their proficiency with specific weapons in a game via a modified scoreboard, but long-term stat tracking I'm just not much of a fan of.

In a sense Q3 already has per-game achievements in the form of awards, like Excellent, Impressive, etc.  Long-term achievements, like long-term stat tracking, both require a centralized server to communicate to.  If stuff could be kept locally that might be a thought, especially for a single-player campaign but I'd want to look at all of this well after the game play itself is hammered into perfection.

Let's get some fourm games going like the good old days? I'm sure we may see an increase in activity then.

I for one would love that, now if I can just convince the lady that Gen is fun, and not extremely frustrating because its a fast paced hardcore shooter...
