Would anyone here be interested in whipping up some GenArena emoticons?

We have tons of smiley faces to post with, but no doom/slippy/strogg/earth heads and such.

i would but i dont know how. id learn but im lazy.

I would if I had some extra time.  Maybe when I'm feeling adventurous?

I'm pretty decent with pixel art as well if you'd like me to try.  What would you want exactly though?  Individual "smiley" sets for each class or just a class-themed set in general?

Well I spent some time last night and whipped together a few Slipgate-themed smiley icons.  Here's what I have so far.  I would appreciate any and all comments on what you think of what I have so far.  The last one, in case you're wondering is supposed to be the Ninja Slippy smiley.  I need to touch up the eyes to make them more visible though.   I'm just toying with the idea of making some of the smileys show off Slippy with his different power-ups right now.

Wow, you did a lot to them since I saw them last night. They look good. Oh, and uh ... the one I'm assuming is a big grin w/ his teeth showing ... is there anyway you could outline his mouth and see if it shows it better ? It's kinda hard to tell ... hehe. But other than that, they look awesome. Keep em up.  :thumb:

I know what you mean.  I really don't like that one as the teeth show up very poorly.  I've tried a couple of different things, but none of them turned out too well.  I'll take a look at it again and see what ideas I can come up with.

Anywho, here's a picture of the Evil Slippy smiley.  I definitely want comments and suggestions on this one as I'm undecided on what more I should do with it.

1 make the emoticon a bit bigger or so , and make it move a bit more or make it do something slipgate specific

It's big enough. It's already bigger than our regular smilies, and we already have a lot of animated ones, so unless he wants to REPLACE those, more aren't really necessary.

The only slipgate smiley I want to see, will be a pile of gibs :P

BTW, be sure to send me the smilies separated into individual files when you're done.

I'd like to see a small doom helmet reving up a chainsaw for an emoticon.

Hehe.  I'll try.  I was planning on doing some emoticons that were fairly animated, but I'm not quite sure as of yet what I'll do.  I was thinking along the same lines as that though Manticore. :)  The only problem I'm going to have with Doom is conveying the different facial expressions since Doom's helmet would rather make that hard.  I'm toying around with the idea of thought bubbles or maybe just making the bottom part of his helmet mostly transparent so you can see his expressions.  I could remove the helmet altogether, but that would be a last resort.  Of course, I do need to finish the Slipgate icons before I start any others, but I was planning on doing Doom next anyhow. :)

Oh and in other news, I stopped smoking crack and realized that my ISP provides some free webspace for me.  So I won't have to keep uploading indivual pictures here anymore. :)

I do apologize for the emoticons taking such a long time in coming.  I have not forgotten about them nor do I intend to stop working on them.  So with that aside, I do bring good news.

The Slipgate-class emoticons are done for the most part. :)  I still plan on returning to Slippy to add class-specific, animated emoticons.  However, I also wish to get the major emoticons for the other classes out of the way so that the Generations-themed emoticons can be implemented sooner.

Attached to this post, is a zip file containing each indivual Slipgate emoticon in gif format.  Pictures of the emoticons are displayed below for those interested in previewing them.

So which class is next?

Slipgate Emoticons are now in place. As Kain completes more, I'll be picking the best of any over-lapping smilies, so expect the slipgate invasion of the emoticons to be a temporary one.

I hope it's the "Classic Doom Face" from the Doom Hud, considering the spacehelmet makes expressions rather hard to see.

Wow... I didn't expect you to implement them already Con.  
I really appreciate it though.  It made a good Friday that much better for me. :)

I still want to experiment a little with the helmet idea and maybe even try thought-bubbles, but I will more than likely just go with the old HUD face.

Yar... I know it's been far too long since I last showed any progress, and that is my fault on multiple levels.  Anyhow, I do have a WIP that I am actually somewhat satisfied with.  I need critique on it however.  I should also say that I've been mainly trying to capture the look before really doing anything else with the smiley so it won't look nearly as bland/expression-less in the future.

i think, if you wanted, you could make it a little bigger, and noone would really mind. if it helps to make it more detailed that is :)

I know how to animate .gif files.  I have a nice program for doing it called GIF Construction Set Professional.  It handles transparent backgrounds and is fully programmable for framerate, etc.

I wouldn't say Kain's efforts are wasted. The doomguy face could be really cool. Instead of a "Doom Rules" sign, you could just gave a 'God mode" face. Then there could be an angry face (like when he gets hit in game) or a "berserk" and bloody, beat of face (though I'm not sure what sort of emotion thatt would represent).

GIF workshop is okay, but I've had better experiences with Adobe's ImageReady (which is a free add-on with Photoshop).

Here's an idea: An animated gif showing Doom firing his BFG, representing ownage. I'm sure Pho would appreciate it, as he's been known to use BFG-related messages in the past. I'd appreciate it too.  :rules:

The Doom smiley I am working on is mostly finished, but I have been either too lazy or too busy and have not made the final touches that I wanted to yet before showing it off.  I guess it doesn't hurt to show it off now though. :p   I still need to adjust the hair some.

As far as creating animated GIF's go, I have to agree with Tabun.  Image Ready handles animation in a fashion that is different than most other editors I have dealt with, but it is quite flexible as a result.  (It essentially just works with layers like Photoshop, but you can adjust the visibility, the location, and the layer effects per frame.)

I did indeed try to do that for you, but the size and the shape of the Doom head icon did not seem like it would make for a very convincing Earth soldier.   I can still probably use what I had completed as a base, but the current design needs to be scrapped.

What about Strogg? You're missing Strogg and Arena. Throw in an Orb for good measure too.

Strogg will probably be next after Earth and finally Arena.  I am thinking Xaero would be the best character to use for an Arena themed set as he has the most visible face out of all the Arena Gladiators, but I could always mix and match Arena characters for that theme.  That's still a far ways off though...

While it's not quite Earth (I apologize for the bad pun,) I did get around to applying those final touches on my version of the Doom smiley.  I did four different expressions, and I avoiding re-doing what Tek already did.  I hope you all like the Doom Evil smiley, I like it much more than what I did with the Slipgate one. ^_^

PS:  Yes, I was lazy with the sad and the glad expressions.  I just thought the pissed-off look complimented Doom so well that I wanted to keep it for those expressions. :)  I'll gladly change it though.
