The metalwork looks a bit rough, but at least it does appear to have a full tang in the hilt.  Awfully blade heavy for real combat use.

I dunno... heavy blades are good for smashing things.  And through things.
That said, this doesn't move me.

Yeah, and heavy swords are good for killing horses and not much else.  The guy with the 3 lb long sword will cut you to ribbons before you can swing a big heavy meatcleaver at them.

So... when was the last time you faced someone with a big heavy sword and you with your 3 lb long sword?  Different strokes for different folks.

I've faced someone with a heavy spear with a sword, its not pretty. You'd think that they'd be slower with something like that but they aren't. But then people forget the fact that a sword was always a weapon of last resort, well except for those massive claymores

right, most battles aren't duels.

Good point, which is why I'd rather take a spear to war as a primary weapon

Thats why the spartans took 8  foot spears into battle as thier primary weapons and swords as thier secondary. The Japanese used spears as thier primary weapons too untill thier armys became too large. (note its easyier for larger groups of troups to use swords than spears) For example the roman legions used the Gladius (roman short sword) because they sometimes numbered tens of thousands of men at a time and in close combat you dont alot of room to maneuver a long weapon like a spear.

Notice I didn't say short stubby sword or rapier, I said 3 lb longsword.  That's a big sword, but not heavy.  Fighting swords are quick and light and rely on proper sectional geometry and speed to make a cut.  Talk to a swordmaster or a master blacksmith some time and they'll tell you the same thing.

I'm a sabre man myself. in the riots in england in the late 80's I lived in a very poor area called chapeltown, and used it to defend my home and wife one time. I won't go into details, but its not much of a weapon in a hallway!

give me a good bayonet anytime for close work.
