Title: New Mappack Format (A quick question) Post by: scalliano on 2004-08-12, 00:48 Just wondering, what happened to:
Entryway This Damn Castle Claustrophobolopolis (!) Nexus Of Hatred Tokay's Towers Flying Plutonians? Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-08-12, 00:58 You missed a couple, like Vesperas
They were removed for either sucking, looking horrible, having bad gameply, or a combination. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: scalliano on 2004-08-12, 01:05 Quote from: ConfusedUs You missed a couple, like Vesperas And Cthon. I always sat out Plutonians when it came up, but I liked Q1E1M2 - shame it looks a bit crap. But hey, Dead Souls ROCKS and I'm well chuffed that one of my suggestions made it in there (Trial By Error)! :thumb: I can still play the old maps offline anyway. :) Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-08-12, 04:00 House of Chthon was the campiest map ever.
The only way to play it was to camp, because there was absolutely ZERO incentive to move around. You either sat on top of the RL/GL platform and spammed, or sniped from the rail platform. To go anywhere else was to die. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Assamite on 2004-08-12, 07:43 Dude, Vesperas ROCKED!
Wait - do you mean "removed from the rotation" or removed from the mod altogether? Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-08-12, 08:12 Removed entirely.
Vesperas was an extremely bad map. It was ugly, the ammo counts obscene, the flow non-existant, and the only class that could do well was Doom. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Phoenix on 2004-08-12, 08:36 I liked the map myself, but the map wasn't very pretty. Hopefully someone can whip up a decent remake of it that looks more Doom-ish.

...at least the version we had. Perhaps a remix might be nice with optimal weapon placement and some interesting flow additions =] Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: scalliano on 2004-08-13, 02:16 Quote from: Assamite Please say you still got copies... Yeah. Granted Plutonians sucked major arse ...Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Tabun on 2004-08-13, 03:41 In addition: the invis spawn was borked, so it only spawned once.
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Phoenix on 2004-08-13, 05:45 I loved Plutonians. It's like Q3DM17 on LSD.
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Assamite on 2004-08-13, 08:27 Who was the putz who decided "Decidia" was a better map than all those dropped ones, anyway? You want to talk about unplayable ugliness? There ya go.
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Arno on 2004-08-13, 09:07 House of C'thon and Entryway were two of my favorite maps... :(
I like my DM maps small and with a high fragrate. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Tabun on 2004-08-13, 15:30 Each to their own.
All I know is that:
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: shambler on 2004-08-13, 16:11 Quote from: Tabun Each to their own. Hey you know much more than that! All I know is that: I agree with the Ho chiton stuff, but I still like to play it. mind, I still play the fragtown maps when I can just wrote this to test my internet connection and mozzilla!, which is fast, and I'm told safer Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: scalliano on 2004-08-13, 19:18 Vesperas is a Doom map. Doom maps WEREN'T elaborate but they were still good. Vesperas wasn't, although it was there that I scored my longest-ranged Doom rocket frag ever. :biggun:
This Damn Castle rocked. OK, so it didn't have the nail shooters, but it was pretty damn accurate imo. Plutonians was more like Q3DM17 on mogadon. Cthon was good for small games, but there were few of those, granted. Pro-Q1DM6 was just too damn big ... Entryway ruled! The only issue I had with it was the spawn right beside the BFG. Claustro was great too. It didn't look much and the bots were garbage, but everything was there and it was great with humans imo. Tokay's Towers? OK, I never liked the original much anyway. Nexus was good, although the weapons were stacked a bit much to one side of the map. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: JLMode on 2004-08-13, 21:24 I will not argue with the others about the old maps, but the two new mappacks rule!!!! specially ctf!!!! and for the ffa mappack, its awesomely cool!!!! of course, you can never be completely save from some crappy maps, but, there ya go!!!! most of the maps are cool, and the mappack has many really cool to awesome maps, and most of em are not dat big in size!!!! i definelly like to see added some of the burial-grounds kinda maps, dat are generally big in size but really cool!!! like lastarena.pk3.... otherwise keep em comin' ; and definelly, will like to see more Doom maps dat look really close to the original and with textures dat make sense to the architecture, maybe featurin' some textures by Tab, i dunno(by the way, nice site ya have Tab!).
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: games keeper on 2004-08-13, 21:25 bah , those maps you removed are those that I miss the most :(
I loed entryway ,vesperas and tokays towers specially vesperas , vesperas was da bomb for me . play that map on a server and i would join in any time . even when I want to take a brake and vesperas comes on , I stay for that map . with other words , there are wurser maps like wizards mansion and that map with the exploding barrels , they both suck . btw , removing vesperas hasnt anything to do with pho owning ya on there is it ? Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-08-13, 21:33 No GK. That had nothing to do with it. Vesperas was removed for being ugly and having horrible gameplay.
The others were removed for the same, or similar, reasons. No use arguing it. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: scalliano on 2004-08-14, 00:06 What exploding barrels?
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-08-14, 00:40 Swiss Cheese Trickster (qfraggel3ffa) has one-time exploding barrels. They explode about a second after being shot, but don't respawn.
This is something possible in any map. I *think* he talks about how to do it in his readme. Just open the pk3 file with winzip, go to the /credits folder, and find the readme for that map, if you're really interested. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: scalliano on 2004-08-14, 00:57 I see. Never noticed that before. Hang on a minute, Trickster ROCKS!
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ReBoOt on 2004-08-14, 07:04 By triggering a shooter_rocket and a func_door you can create a exploding barrel it is really a "hack" but it works.
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-08-14, 13:51 I think he used multiple shooter_rockets because just standing anywhere near one of those things when it goes off is a death sentence. They HURT.
Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Phoenix on 2004-08-14, 14:24 Quote from: games keeper btw , removing vesperas hasnt anything to do with pho owning ya on there is it ? For the record I begrudgingly went along with the decision to remove Vesperas for most of the same reasons already given. I still want to see a better and more balanced version of it remade. I liked the map myself, it was one of the few open maps we had, but it did tend to be extremely lopsided. As for me owning Con there... who DIDN'T I own there? :)~ Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Tekhead on 2004-08-14, 19:54 On another note, I and quite a few others here @ Qcon feel that Dead Souls is a freaking weird map to play on - FFA or Tourney. However, I was probably wrong in my opposistion of Trial by Error - I actually had a fun time playing it 1v1 with CrioKnight!
Pukka3tourney4 is a Strogg-DOMINANT map. Hehe. =] Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Tabun on 2004-08-14, 20:17 Quote As for me owning Con there... who DIDN'T I own there? /me is still Tabun property. It's complicated enough that total domination is hard to achieve, but not so complicated that it's impossible to navigate.Pukka3tourney4 is a Strogg-DOMINANT map. Hehe. =] It's quite nice. ;) Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: Phoenix on 2004-08-14, 22:23 Omega and I went round and round on a 1 vs 1 match on Dead Souls last night. I think the map got him more times than I did. It's very easy to get lost, and just when you think you've figured a route out you end up going down the wrong passage, or you run in circles with nobody to shoot. Skippy rockets aren't nearly as useful as one would think owing to the crazy layout. I think I got more kills on that map with the shaft than anything else.
Otherworld is just strange. You never know where anyone is going to be on that map. I played that as Strogg on the Euro server and I had quite a hard time connecting the dots with 156+ ping, mostly because I had people right in my face half the time. Title: Re: New Mappack Format Post by: ConfusedUs on 2004-08-14, 22:40 Dead Souls has a very intricate layout. No passage ends up on the same vertical level as it started. At least the only dangerous area is the quad area. Gotta be sure not to fall into the fog.
Otherworld actually has a very simple layout, once you understand where the teleports go. If you think Otherworld is bad, you should try Areowalk, which Otherworld is VERY similar to. Aerowalk has about 8 teleporters in a map designed for 2-4 players. It's nuts. |
