Title: Generations 4 Doom 3 (This is asking for a foxing)
Post by: Footman on 2004-09-22, 04:37

With what's said in the news post for this, there might be a chance they'll try to take models from Generations Arena.

Chances are high it'll get canned, though.

Are they allowed to call it Generations? Hrm.

Nothing will come of this.

It's not going to happen.  I think we only have copyright on the name "Generations Arena" but I wouldn't swear to it.  LeeMon would be the one to ask as to whether or not they can call it "Generations".  Either way, the amount of work involved would be astounding.  We're still working on Gen for Q3, there's no way someone's going to do it for Doom 3 even if it WERE legal.  Besides having to remake all the weapon models and functions, you'd have physics issues galore, courtesy of that 1066 gravity value and 60FPS hard-capped internal clock.  That doesn't even broach the subject of maps, monsters, etc...  You're talking about remaking 4 or more complete games within the uber-complex Doom 3 environment.  Even if the legal hurdles didn't kill it, the workload would.  The end result will be a non-starter at best, and at worst a project that turns out horribly buggy and half-completed before the team implodes or gets bored and gives up.

Aren't they the same fools who wanted to do a Generations ripoff for RtCW?   O_o

I saw a screenshot of this mod here: http://www.quake.de/show_picture.php?id=256 (http://www.quake.de/show_picture.php?id=256) .

IMO, there's not a chance in hell this Doom3 mod will ever see the light of the day, never mind the legal obstacles.

It'll be interesting to see how far this gets before the inevitable happens. As much as ripped models and maps help the authenticity level there really is only one outcome. Q2, anyone..?

I assume it's one of those placeholder models from the leaked Doom3 alpha.

Which doesn't make it any less illegal, of course.

No, that's a Quake 3 plasma gun set at an odd angle. You can get the same effect in CPMA with custom offset settings that are really high. Honestly I'm surprised you guys didn't recognize it straight off. The plasma projectiles are from D3 however.

I'm getting a 404 for the mod's homepage from a link on Doom 3 Classic (http://cdoom.d3files.com/index.php?page=faq) that used to work. It's looking dim for these guys.

That placeholder model in the Doom3 alpha is the Quake3 plasma gun set at an odd angle. This is exactly how it looks like in the alpha. Id Software probably used it for early weapon code testing in Doom3. I suspect that these modmakers have been messing around with the alpha.

This project is wearing a big neon "FOX ME" sign. Even if it is smuggled into existence (why is it that people always catch and rat out Q1/Q2/Q3/HL/etc mods with ripped stuff while Doom and Wolfenstein modders CONSTANTLY rip graphics, sounds, and, in once case, a whole level from another game (Strife Doom not only has many of the graphics and sounds from the game Strife, it took the entire starting level as well), but nothing bad ever happens to them? Does anyone care about what Doom modders do anymore?), it will be a crappy half-assed mod.

This is semi Doom3/Generations related. Any plans for putting in an alternate Doom class based off of Doom 3. I don't think it would really be worth the effort because there is already a Doom class, but it could be a good addition if made properly.

If Doom3 was a real action game rather than a glitzy tech demo... perhaps. But...

Нет. (http://dl.downloadhosting.com/download/tekhead/CrashIcon1.gif)
