Title: QUAKE 4 GOLD! (Shipping October 18th) Post by: LeeMon on 2005-10-03, 23:30 I may have to call in sick to work. :D
Quote The long awaited sequel to QUAKE II, QUAKE 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the Earth Defense Force's legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race. "On October 18, QUAKE is dialing it up to 4.0 on the Richter Scale with this new chapter in Earth's war against the Strogg," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "Fusing an epic war-story driven single player campaign, and fast-paced QUAKE III Arena inspired multiplayer, QUAKE 4 delivers a gaming experience fans will be raving about for years." Hell yeah! Can't wait. *antisipates Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Woodsman on 2005-10-04, 07:22 guess ill have to get that video upgrade
Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Phoenix on 2005-10-04, 08:06 I still can't even run Doom 3.
Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Phoenix on 2005-12-01, 02:53 The Quake 4 Demo is out now. I've tried it out myself. My machine doesn't even qualify as breakfast, it's more like a "light snack" for Q4. 2.0 GHz CPU minimum? :wtf:
The demo includes multiplayer support for one level. Even on "lowest of the low quality" I got less than 20 FPS. I did, however, score my first two rail kills in Q4 today - with 230 ping (only somewhat empty server I could find). That was fairly miraculous considering. I didn't manage to tag anyone with the gauntlet though. As far as commentary on the gameplay goes, I'll reserve that until I can run the game at some kind of decent settings. I'm already not too fond of the Strogg berserkers though. Those bastards can actually hurt you this time. :surprise: Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Lopson on 2005-12-01, 10:17 If you can come up with a good setting Pho, please post it. I'm sure there are more people with slow computers that would want to run Q4 as smooth as possible.
Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: shambler on 2005-12-02, 09:22 I've just played the demo too.
good, but different. didn't like the nailgun much, (but it could have been the hyperblaster i was using!) too much like the hyperblaster. you walk very slowly, seems to has a lot of narrow passages, felt abit like I was playing 'house of the dead' I'll buy it when i'm on holiday, i think. settings? 1024x768, with low graphics settings for me. I'm a quake 1 fanboy, (reason I came to gen, and indeed to Q3) so if I can get it to look like that, I'll be as happy as a pig in mud. bet my frame rates low as hell...... Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Lopson on 2005-12-02, 10:01 The resolution doesn't affect me much, I put the refresh rate at 85Hz and everything looks as good as 1024*768, even in 640*480. What matters the most is the FPS. Now if a person could make it look like Quake I, that would mean that it would all look really bad, since Q I is 1995 :shifty: . That would be nice.
Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: shambler on 2005-12-02, 14:34 explain please?
Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: death_stalker on 2005-12-02, 17:43 I kinda like the the nailgun and hyperblaster in it. The nailgun has this neat alt fire mode to it that locks the nails on a target and homes in on them. Pretty sweet. Though they don't have much for mobility they are handy if firing on the move. Which in later levels it becomes essential unless you want to get turned into swiss cheese. The Hyperblaster, well that's were the kinda comes in. I got spoiled by the old q2 version and there's something different about about. Not really sure what though...
The multiplayer, I think, is a clone of q3 with enhanced graphics. Not too much new there. But plays fairly decent for me. IMO it's well worth the purchase, and much better than d3. Now if I could only stop from resorting to cheats near the end of the game to beat it... hehe. Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Angst on 2005-12-03, 18:39 wuss :P
I liked the end of the game, it was finally a challenge of sorts. Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: shambler on 2005-12-03, 19:27 I played the demo, then saw the game in town for 20 quid. I could not not but it then could I?
Haven't started playing it yet though. Got a copy for BAT for christmas, cos he said to. He's finished D3 and the mission pack, which I haven't even played Doom3 ecxcept for the first couple of levels. :ownage: Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Phoenix on 2005-12-03, 23:13 Kruz: I can't really come up with good settings since my machine is under the minimum specs. Min CPU is a 2 GHz, mine is a 1.53 GHz. I'm underrated for the game, so even on minimum settings my average framerate is around 15 in a busy area. There's no substitute settings-wise for being under minimum specs.

Post by: Lopson on 2005-12-05, 10:16 :( But... my CPU is 933 Mhz... And I'm able to play DooM 3 at 15 fps... Aw man! Damn you Quake!
Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Phoenix on 2005-12-05, 20:51 Quote from: scalliano That's roughly the same as my CPU. Is the game playable at all? Not by my standards. I mean, you can move and shoot things at easier skill levels, but we're talking maybe 1 or 2 Strogg and maybe a Marine escorting you on the initial map. This is all "first level" stuff. That means once it gets to bigger fights or more complex environments later in the game you can pretty much forget about it, unless you like taking 15 minutes to load levels and playing what amounts to a stop-motion game.Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: shambler on 2005-12-07, 15:22 I am enjoying quake 4, but I can't turn off the view bob. I tried the normal q3 stuff, and it disabled my mouse in game. (not in menus) so i had to put it back to 0.002.
any ideas anyone? Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Lordbane2110 on 2005-12-07, 22:30 Fear Not Quakers cause Lord B has arrived
now after much fiddling, generally making mistakes and corrupting the game at one point i can announce the Easier playable settings for quake 4 now after much recoding, as i'm not half bad once i get going i give to you guys this the quake 4 config that should solve your problems :D honestly i have had quake 4 working on my sisters and that's a 1.4GHZ now with this i can run it at ultra quality at 35FPS you may have to down grade the settings slightly to get it to run on yours tho pho as it's currently set for medium quality with all the effects now the spec i ran this on was 1.4ghz Pentium 4 256 Ram and only 80gb of hardrive space plus it was using a ge force 4Ti i can't promise that it will run quake 4 better, but it ran at 32FPs on the lowest setting with my sisters PC also lines in the config you may have to change seta image_useCache "0" seta image_cacheMegs "512" seta image_cacheMinK "20480" as that's currently set for my PC but happy fragging if it works for you like it did for my sis :thumb: so it should cut the mustard Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: ReBoOt on 2005-12-08, 14:38 Heh q4 is cool but for some reason i just stopped to play it..i didnt even finish it :S guess i gotta start play it again..but to be honest q4 aint "that" great it's playable alright but no where as fun as ol q1 was :P or maybe i grown ol and don't like these new fancy good looking games..or perhaps it's that bloody darkness i wanna see what im shooting at, see their little gibbies fly away when my rocket impacts hehe
Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Phoenix on 2005-12-08, 20:12 That's another thing I can rant about from here to Judgement Day...
WHERE ARE ALL THE !#!@$%@# GIBS!?!? Seriously, in every demo I've played so far of new games - Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Quake 4 - you cannot gib things, and bodies freaking disappear in Doom 3 and Quake 4. I am sick of this "disappearing body" crap. You hardly get to see what the monsters look like when they're trying to kill you, and usually that's when you can get a good look at them is when they're dead. I want to gloat over my kills, dammit. I don't care about "ragdoll" either, I want GIBS. Gibs are good. Gibs are fun. Give me back my gibs! :sob: Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: shambler on 2005-12-08, 20:58 Is it just me, or are these figures a bit scary? I know they are marines, but the faces are TOO human, a bit like shop dummys. I think they are a little bit worrying.
Anyway, gibs? you get them if you jam a strogg in a doorway and the door closes on it. I'll try for a screenie. Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! Post by: Gnam on 2006-02-19, 20:39 I've been playing it for the past week or so. So far, the single player is pretty mediocre. The level designs are not very intriguiing, and whenever you're just starting to get into it, the level ends, or there's a cutscene, or dialogue between your squadmates. The squadmates rarely add much to the combat, mostly just ruining that great sense of fending for yourself typical in id shooters. The enemies aren't that fun to kill; they aren't smart enough to take cover or flank you, but most of the time, they don't even rush you very effectively either. Mostly they just stand in place and shoot at you. But, I hate how when the Gunners rush you, they have so much health it's pretty much impossible to kill them before they hit you unless you see them coming 50 yards away (4 rails/rocket/nades to kill)...they run so fast, backpedaling doesn't work, and even if you manage to dodge out of the way when they swing their blade, it hits you even if you're visibly out of it's reach.
The environments do get slightly more interesting later in the game, but nothing spectacular. The vehicle segments are also really silly. The areas you travel in are so contricted, and the weapons you have are so weak, that you don't really get the sense of power that using a vehicle should. It's just a crappy diversion from normal FPSing. The multiplayer is pretty fun though. It's a weak effort, with inferior number of maps, player counts, modes, and system performance, and almost no new features to seperate it from Q3A...but, it's fun anyway because: 1) People play it, and unlike Q3, it's not all uber-clan-tourney vets, but it's not all n00bs either. Good middle-ground of opponents. 2) The graphical update, while relatively minor, makes it a bit more interesting than staring the same shit you've been looking at for 7 years. 3) There aren't a ton of maps, but generally the ones that are there are pretty good, and not as hit-or-miss as Q3's larger selection. 4) Most of the minor gameplay changes are nice; like the nailgun, better grenade launcher, visible body damage, lighting (sometimes people's shadows do give them away), Team Arena powerups, etc. The only thing I'm not really crazy about is the DMG (Dark Matter Gun), which is not as bad as the Q3 BFG, but not as good as the Q2 BFG either. Luckily, it's only in a couple maps. So...I don't know, it's not a bad game if you've got the system requirements for it, but I wouldn't buy a whole new system just for Q4, expecting it to be amazing. If you're going to upgrade for other games anyway, I'd recomend picking Q4 as well, but don't expect perfection. If you want to hear more about it, I've been posting commend on my 1up blog, if you really want to hear more of my ranting; http://gnam.1up.com/ (http://gnam.1up.com/) . Title: Re: QUAKE 4 GOLD! I started playing 'alice' instead, until I finished it, then went to tribes vengance, so I have to go back to Q4 at some time.Deathmatch? I prefer Gen, with all classes, and then UT2004, where I seem to do better than in Gen, then Q1. Sorry about the size of the last picture. just a mistake. |
