Now if they would have kept its head alive for that long, separated from the body, that would have been really interesting. I know they've tried it with dogs and even with chimps a few times. It's not the best way to make friends with PETA (although ofcourse they didn't exist back then), but it's quite fascinating..

In effect it was not decapitation, it was a severing of the brain. The thinking part was gone, so yes, Mike was a goner. His body was on automatic pilot at that point owing to how the brain works in a chicken. I don't find it particularly fascinating myself, but then stories like this tend to evoke a strong emotional response in me. I will refrain from ranting though.
