Title: Bot-based Training Mode Post by: bengreenwood on 2008-02-16, 15:56 Hi,
How's about some kind of bot-based training game, which could act as a single-player game for Generations? It would be something you could use to hone individual skills, such as rail-gunning etc. I recently read a book about learning/ training etc. and in that, it was saying how the best way to learn something is often to break it down into it's component parts. That way, you can identify weaknesses, and work on them. So one mode could be purely about practising accuracy, and in this mode, you have a railgun with unlimited ammo. You get loads of bots running around, so many that's there always at least one in front of you for you to shoot. They can't see you or hurt you. So you just keep blasting away at the bots for say, three minutes. To pass the game mode, you need to make a certain number of shots, and achieve a certain percentage of hits. As the game level increases, you could even make it so that the speed of the bots increases or something, to make it harder. Obviously there would be a bunch of different modes, for example there could be one in which you get a load of bots chasing you around, all of whom are armed, whereas you're unarmed, but you're invincible. So in three minutes, you've just got to be good enough at strafing/ jumping around to be hit as few times as possible. Again, like the railgun thing, you would need a certain score to pass the mode. Ultimately the point with something like this is, that as well as being a fun variation on the game (especially if there was a berserk pack training mode), it would help anyone improve their skills, regardless of how good they are when they start playing. And obviously, you could compare high scores etc. So what do you guys think? That will be fixed later, so that the standard Q3 single player mode can work.
As for a training mode... I'm not sure that making a duck shoot will really help. Actually you can simulate the same thing yourself by doing the following: 1) Using the dmflags to enable unlimited ammo and fully loaded. You can rail away as much as you want, or use whatever weapon. 2) Spawning in skill 0 bots only using the addbot command. Skill 0 bots rarely ever shoot and only run around a lot. When they do shoot, they do minimal damage and don't hit often. Example: /addbot ranger 0 3) Setting a fraglimit and timelimit. If you want 3 minutes to get 25 frags, then just set /fraglimit 25 and /timelimit 3 4) Watch your accuracy and impressive on the scoreboard. This is a good indicator of how well you're shooting with the railgun in a railgun-only setting. Beyond that I won't comment as new gameplay modes are one of the last things that will be implemented and added since they are dependent upon everything else working correctly first. |
