Title: Serious Vulerability in Ubisoft DRM Software
Post by: Phoenix on 2012-07-31, 17:01
If you own any Ubisoft games, you might want to read this:

Quote
Hacker Tavis Ormandy has discovered a serious vulnerability in a well-known PC game DRM system. The Google engineer said that after buying a game from Ubisoft he became aware that its “Uplay” browser plug-in might prove problematic. In the early hours of this morning Ormandy confirmed that the add-on allows remote and “wide access” to machines running the DRM, potentially giving malicious attackers free reign to wreak havoc.

Not sure if you have a game that uses this DRM?  Here's a list of which ones do:

Even if it stops paying customers from playing the game, too :P

TBH I haven't bought a Ubi game since they went DRM-mental with AC2.

I suppose it's only a matter of time before EA's system gets nailed (crosses fingers) ...

What means DRM?

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management.  It's copy protection / antipiracy measures.  Usually these tend to be invasive and frustrating to legitimate users of software while being highly ineffective at actually stopping piracy.

Well just take a look at random torrent sites and you see how easy DRM is broken :) Maybe they should invent something new!

Perhaps they should look to something old instead:  Products that don't suck and aren't overpriced.  They could also deal with reality when it comes to their business model.  Instead of viewing piracy as "lost sales" they should just factor it out completely.  You sold X units.  You have Y cost.  X - Y = profits.  That's how it was done back in the old days.  Pirates will never buy so don't even worry about them.  Instead, reward your legitimate customers with extras like they're doing with a lot of pre-orders now, and give them superb support and service.  Old fashioned, I know, but the world could use some old fashioned sense about now.
