Title: Screenshots (Screenshots from other games)
Post by: shambler on 2006-04-08, 23:53
I thought it might be nice if we put up some screen shots that we took from the other games that we play.

I play Quake 1 a lot with telejano engine, and a lot of textures assembled from all over the place. As I've just put the new PC together, I found a texture pack from about 3 years ago that I can't remember where I got, and this is how I play the game on the Lan

I play a lot of UT as well, and if I can find any intresting shots, I'll post them.

The tank would win easily at range, duh. The shambler would put up a better fight if it could get into melee range.. but would most likely still lose.. especially since I doubt the 'low damage from explosives' thing is coded in for the shambler.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Phoenix on 2006-04-12, 06:34
Unless there were a lot of ammo laying around, no.  There are too many cybers.  It takes about 20 direct rockets to kill one (remember, cybers are immune to splash damage), or 3 direct BFG9000 hits at point blank range (2 if you're damned lucky).  You could kill 5 at the most with rockets, and maybe 5 with the 9000.  Using plasma instead of the BFG, it takes about 190 rounds to kill a cyber, so that means you could off about 3 instead.  This leaves you with shotgun shells and bullets.  You can kill two cybers at most with shotgun shells by shooting the SSG point blank, takes 40 shells to off one cyber.  You can empty the chaingun and maybe kill one cyber.

So let's do the math, being generous and assuming we don't eat any rockets:
Rockets:  5
BFG9000:  5
SSG:  2
Chaingun: 1
Total:  13

There are at least 24 cyberdemons in the picture, at least that's all the metal legs I can count.  Without ammo or an exit, you are SCREWED.

Spawn:  Actually the low explosives damage thing is coded in.  Have you ever tried to stand point blank with a tank in Q2?  They'll sit there and fire the laser blaster into you non-stop, and unlike the wimpy blasters on the flyers, that thing hurts.  It would damage the shambler even quicker since the tank wouldn't stop very often to switch weapons.  Still, I would love to see that melee fight.  It's too bad there isn't any other map with both entities present.

heres me and my team in a UT2004 game. Only now have I started prefering 2004 to original UT. Don't know why, but I could always hold my own in UT, but in other FPS's I am always very near the bottom of the scoreboard.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: scalliano on 2006-04-18, 23:06
McDeth and Sham: You're both right ;) It's a map from Kiltron's ill-fated Unreal Arena mod. It did my head in that the mod was left as unfinisherd as it was, so I decided to do a bit of backseat modding and extract all of the finished UT levels into a seperate pk3 and bring them back into VQ3. The result was the above along with Turbine, Tempest and Morbias][. The only issues with the maps are that Morbias has a RA where the redeemer should be (I would have plumped for the BFG myself) and Morpheus is COMPLETELY low-gravity. Other than that, they're great conversions.

The mod is availabe here:

http://meanarena.planetquake.gamespy.com/d.../downloads.html (http://meanarena.planetquake.gamespy.com/downloads.html)

And if you don't want to go through the slog of messing around with pk3s you can use this:

quake3.exe +set fs_basegame unrealarena +set fs_game baseq3

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: shambler on 2006-04-19, 09:40
THis is what happens if you exit the map and the coloured balls are chasing you - I managed to out run them, as I was short of health i thought it best to get the hell out while i could, but as the end of episode script came up, these things were 'bashing' against the camera viewpoint.

even thoough i had exited the level they were still trying to get me! Gos knows where my sons where at this time, i think they'd both sacrifised them selves so that i could reach the end of the level.

I tend to play a lot of Q1 with or without mission packs etc with my sons, as if we play any deathmatch game on the LAN they get angry with me or each other and start a fight, so we mainly gave up deathmatch, except some rare times on the Gen euro server, when there are others present they watch there tempers somewhat.

we sometimes play teamdeathmatch in UT and I now have jedge dredd v death, which you can play as co-op apparantly. might even try Diakatana co-op.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: shambler on 2006-04-20, 18:41
I think this is Tenebrae, but I often use telejano, which seems to run faster. depends if I'm on the lan in co-op, or jsut running thou the game again.

I seem to live in Q1 these days.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Phoenix on 2006-04-20, 20:02
I tried Tenebrae once, and it was hellaciously buggy.  I haven't tried Telejano.  I usually use Q2K4 if I'm playing Quake 1 for any reason, and I use EZquake for Quakeworld.  I like it much better than trying to use GLQuakeworld since it's too dark, and I can't stand Quake's lack of interpolation.  I found out EZQuake doesn't work right with ASE, it doesn't load the configs for some reason, so I wrote a batch file called ezquake.bat and I call that from ASE.  Here's my batch file:

O:/Games/Quake/ezquake-gl.exe  -width 800 -height 600 -conwidth 800 -bpp 32 -m_smooth +exec cfggfx_gl_faithful.cfg

Substitute backslashes for forward slashes.  Once EZQuake loads to the console, I just type "/connect" and press ctrl+v to paste in the IP address.  That gets around the ASE problem.  I don't play Quakeworld very often but once in a while it helps to gauge the feel of Gen's stuff against it.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: scalliano on 2006-04-20, 20:53
Tenebrae does have a few issues, namely that godawful E3M3 clipping glitch (which, oddly enough, I also got with Q2K4 the first time I tried it). There is a fix, though, although it refuses to load the first secret level off Hipnotic. On Q2K4 I get a HOM effect where the status bar should be (???)

Myself, I still use good ol' fashioned MHQuake version 6 for SP and Fuhquake for QW. Both have interpolated anims, but what is it with that crosshair??

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Phoenix on 2006-04-20, 21:51
Well, the bugs with Tenebrae I encountered included the game hitching for about 30 seconds every other minute, and random crashes.  The video flicker on the HUD in Q2K4 is something leftover from GLQuake.  I forget what the fix for that was.  If I remember what it was I'll post it.  I do have all my Q1 maps vispatched.  That's something else that makes Quake single player so much more enjoyable is translucent water.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: shambler on 2006-04-20, 23:38
I have never played quakeworld. didn't have a decent connection until 2 years ago, and by then other games were out. might try it now.

The clipping thing got us for the first time ever the other week. didn't understand it at the time. Also seemed to happen in one of the hipnotic levels, about half way though.

i had never heard of Q2K4 until today. what a big world the internet is!  :ownage:

Too bad those gouys at Tenebrae2 aren't progressing at all. It looked promissing. But industri was a Tenebrae2 leak, so that's why I asked. I still think that Fuhquake is the best though, stable framerate, good graphics.

About WolfenDoom on Doomsday... is there some specific way of setting it up? I tried playing it in the past (about a year ago) and the dogs had obscene amounts of health (since they were actually pinky demons in disguise) compared to what they should have.

And I just tried it now and got the same result.

Have you tried aiming downward at the dogs?  It works wonders.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Thomas Mink on 2006-05-03, 04:37
I know how to aim. I hit them.. the blood spatter effect appears, the dog whines, etc etc etc, but they don't die in the usual 2-3 hits as they did in Wolf3d. It takes like 15 or so.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Phoenix on 2006-05-03, 05:07
I can kill them in two punches myself, or 2 bullets.  One shotgun blast (machinegun, but we know it's really the Doom boomstick) should kill a dog instantly.  It sounds like you don't have the dehacked patch loaded.  15 bullets sounds more like a Doom demon than a Nazi woof woof.  Here's what I do to run it using Kickstart:

Games tab:
Doom II:  Hell On Earth

Wads tab:
YourDoomsdayPath/wads/2nd_enc.wad

Other Options tab:
Add to the command line:  -deh 2nd_enc.deh

2nd_enc.wad is in the wads folder of course.
2nd_enc.deh should be in YourDoomsdayPath/Run/jDoom/

If you're using one of the other missions besides Second Encounter then substitute the appropriate filenames inplace of the ones I've provided.  If you're not using Doomsday and Kickstart to run JDoom then I can't really help you with the pathing for JDoom, you'll have to check the manual.  You really do need that dehacked patch though.

Actually, that wouldn't work. Monsters of the same type are immune to their projectiles.. like.. Cacodemons are immune to those lightning ball things that they spit.. Arachnotrons are immune to green Arachnotron plasma.. etc.

Now, I've never seen two cybers in the same room before.. so I might be wrong.

I believe they don't, but I haven't played Doom for a while, so I might be wrong. At least I have never seen it. :rules:

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Phoenix on 2006-05-05, 18:47
Monsters of the same type do not fight each other, with one rather strange exception and I'll explain below.  Cyberdemons are also 100% immune to explosive damage from rockets and barrels.  This means only direct rocket hits from something other than a cyberdemon will damage them, eg the player's rocket launcher.  This rule applies to projectile-throwing monsters only.  Bullet-shooting monsters can and will piss anything off if they don't watch their aim.  You can easily get  two spider masterminds to chaingun each other.  I've done it numerous times on The Spirit World in Doom 2 near the massive dump of plasma cell packs.  I usually just grab the invuln, BFG all the arachnotrons, and let the momma spiders chaingun each other and finish the winner off with a single BFG blast.

The exception to like monsters not fighting each other involves exploding barrels.  I've not quite figured out exactly how this works, but it involves getting one monster to set off a barrel and either damage itself or damage its buddy.  It doesn't always work, but if the "trick" kicks in, one will turn against the other.  Once it gets close enough to inflict melee damage, they'll fight to the death.  I've seen this happen with imps, Barons of Hell, and Hell Knights.  I've even seen monsters attack themselves (!) after blowing up a barrel.  It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen in Doom was the Baron of Hell in E2M3 start clawing himself to death.

Spawn:  You can get more than one cyberdemon stomping around on some custom maps.  Also, if you have Final Doom, Level 32 (Go To IT) on Ultra-Violence has 2 or 3 cyberdemons stomping around at one point.  I can tell you for a fact that they ignore each other completely.

I got it from right here (http://newwolf.sourceforge.net). Doesn't get updated often, and seriously needs full mouselook (instead of just for turning), in my opinion anyway.. but it gets the job done.

New doom has quite some years, too bad it doesn't have the popularity it should have.

Must've just heard about the Playstation 3 launch price.

I'll have to check that Wolf3D port out sometime. I was really disappointed when my "Windows compatible" version of Wolfenstein 3D was still just the DOS version, so no sound for me. Always wanted to try playing through it, too.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Phoenix on 2006-05-13, 21:53
The retail install of Wolf doesn't work right with Windows 2K and later.  It's basically just a shell for the DOS program, which did work right up through Windows 98.  Since it does include the DOS executables, Dosbox is your answer.  I've been running Wolf with that without any real problems.  I set the CPU cycles at 8000 and I don't get any hitches.

I'm quite lucky in this matter. I just go to my room, sit in front of my 386, and VOILA! Problem solved, more fun and no porting stuff, even though the port has models and better textures, there's nothin' like playin' it raw.

Title: Re: Screenshots
Post by: Thomas Mink on 2006-05-14, 05:51
I just use the port with the old sprites and the original textures. I took the screenshot with models and updated textures just for fun. That being said, I also play jDoom the same way.

I'm gonna be mauled to death for reviving an old topic, but I just had to post this...

This is from around a year ago (Or close), when I was using my stepdad's iMac.  Me and the other guy were Gauntlet-dueling at the Mega in q3dm7 when we both accidently went through the teleporter at the same time. I got the telefrag though. There's no gibs because I don't like blood clouding my view. =P

Oh yeah, one health left. Can you say "lol?"

The Stranglehold demo is incredible.  You can dive-bomb, slide across tables, jump off walls, hop onto carts with wheels, and grind down rails.  Every-time you pull off one of these stunts, the world slows down allowing you to see bullets coming and going.  Every enemy you dispatch in this manner gives you style points.  The more style points you have, the cooler the ability you can pull off.  Want to heal yourself on the fly?  Done.  Want infinite ammo to go on a killing spree?  Done.  Want to watch your bullet fly towards its target and kill your opponent in a gruesome and unique manner?  Done.  Want to spin around in a circle mowing down everything in your path?  Done. Oh and did I mention that nearly everything is destructible which allows you to dispatch your enemies in a highly creative manner?

Want to know what else is awesome?  Besides the demo being fairly lengthy and meaty, beating it unlocks an extra difficulty and an extra ability for you to use.  How sporking awesome is that?  Say it with me, PRE-ORDERED!  Seriously any game that allows me to watch a bullet I fired fly through someone's neck has succeeded in getting my attention.

Portal is the best single-player game Valve has created. (It's a first-person puzzler!)
Team Fortress 2 is the best multi-player game Valve has created.  (The taunts, my God the taunts...)

Dear Valve,

I'm not even angry.  I'm being so sincere right now.  ;)

Title: Re: Screenshots (Screenshots from other games)
Post by: Kajet on 2007-10-17, 01:02
Yeah valve would be retarded to NOT make a sequel to portal considering how pretty much everyone whose played it has said nothing bad about it, and rightfully so.

Dear Valve,

Please wise up and ditch Steam so I can buy these games and not feel like my soul has been removed.

Yours wishfully,

scalliano

PS. Or include Portal in the PS3 version.
PPS. And mouse/keyboard support.

Quite looking forward to that game actually, although it bugs me that the games media seem to be saying that it's the game that could "save" the PS3. My PS3 doesn't need saving. MGS4, anyone? Why buy a 360 when all its big hitters end up on the PC anyway? :P

Tab: Laura Croft works in an Indian takeaway in West Belfast. She's got 3 kids and lives in a pokey 2-bedroom flat. I made that up.

The reason being, at least in my mind, is because up until this holiday season the PS3 has been selling on nothing but brand-recognition and promises.  It has finally caught up to where the Xbox 360 was 6-8 months after launch (one or two must-have exclusive titles, a few good ones, and a sizable collection of network-exclusive games.)  Seeing as how the Xbox 360 has been out for over two years now, the PS3 still has a long way to go before I would say it's comparable in terms of features and library.  That's not to say that it's bad, I just wouldn't choose it over an Xbox 360.

That said, will you be purchasing Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3?  I am curious to see how well mods work out on that version.  I currently own the PC version but I can't run it. :p

Oh and Tab, Laura sounds more suiting no? :p

I probably will get UT3, although at the mo it's a case of seeing whats left after the Chraistmas shopping's been done.

Granted, up until now it has been a case of "the good stuff's coming, honest!" but the system is still finding its feet. Sony aren't half as big as Micro$oft, remember, and we've seen a few occasions where M$ have quite cynically waded in with the cold hard and snapped up games which were originally being developed as multi-format (Bioshock being a case in point)*. True that this has left us Sony fanboys feeling a bit cold, but the system is finally beginning to come good. That and the fact that online play is TOTALLY FREE.

I don't dispute that the 360 has some class games (so does the Wii), it's just that with a decent PC I can have the best of both, I just have to wait a bit longer on some of them.

*I know it could be argued that Sony did this back in the day with GTA, but that was back when nothing else could run it, apart from the PC. Besides, as a Megadrive/Genesis owner I'm no stranger to the opposition getting the upper hand. Eighteen months I had to listen to those irritating (and rather hostile) SNES fanboys winding on about Street Fighter II. But hey, we got MK with all the gore and death moves, so there.
