Duke Nukem Developer 3D Realms Shuts Down
by Nick Breckon and Chris Faylor May 07, 2009 12:40pm CST
Update 3: 3D Realms webmaster Joe Siegler has commented on the shut down, stating: "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."

Siegler's post also reflects the unexpected nature of the situation, as he was unaware of the impending shut down during an interview conducted yesterday afternoon.

I suppose this was to be expected.  Sad, but expected.

Hmm... after www.3drealms.com went offline, suddenly it's back online, with a "goodbye" pic.  Their forums are offline, however things like job postings, etc, have not been changed.  If 3DRealms has not truly gone bankrupt then they're pulling one hell of a publicity stunt prior to dropping a (nuclear) bombshell on the world and saying "It's done"!  How many people now have Duke on their mind owing to the Shacknews article?  I know what Siegler said, but I'm going to wait and see what happens with this.

I had the same thought -- that this might just be a publicity stunt prior to release.  ...not a big deal to me either way.

Eh... that's what happens when your biggest (and to my knowledge ONLY) game is in development for a decade...

Once again, DNF lives up to its abbreviation ...

Sadly, it's not even a publicity stunt, it's corporate greed. (http://kotaku.com/5259942/3d-realms-were-not-closing-spent-20-million-on-duke-nukem-forever)  It looks like they had every intention of finishing DNF until Take Two got their panties in a bind.

So the short version is 3DRealms lives, the DNF development team was laid off, and Take Two is trying to muscle 3DR to get control of the Duke Nukem franchise, and 3DR is telling Take Two to go spork themselves, to which I have to agree with 3DR.  I could accept them taking too long and running out of money and not finishing because they just couldn't get it right, but for DNF to die in this particular manner is utter buffalo droppings.  What I would like Take Two to do with themselves right now wouldn't translate, and I think it's better that way.

$20 Mil? Isn't that more money than what was spent to make Final Fantasy 7?

Well, when speaking in terms with the most overrated game in the universe, I highly doubt it.
