Some of you may have noticed my signature (my temporary fat-guy-eats sig, that is). I was trying to  point out how I find animated gifs annoying personally. Maybe I didn't pick the best animated gif for that- but it's quite hilarious enough ;]

• they form a distraction from the actual content
  
• they make the average board-page look like a badly designed HTML-page (just add size 20 comic sans ms fonts in bright red, green and yellow et voila :))
  
• if it is amusing now - it'll get old fast :]
  

Anway, that's how i feel about it - just decided to post now, since it's starting to become a hype to add/use animated sigs & avatars.

I've seen still sigs that are distracting. Moving ones are fifty times as bad. Tab's is driving me nuts (and he knows it). Please no more.

i could change it back to the normal one, but dic put alotta time into that animation :)

I have yet to see any animations that bother me, be it Phoenix or Daedalus' avatars to your signature Tabun. I can imagine some that would bother me, but I'm sure that could be dealt with when the time comes. But these current ones are fine I think, they had some flare and personality to the boards :)

Just for the record, I find Byskwik's signature to be the most distracting. Not because of what it attempts to imply but because of the shape and shades used.

ahem. time for the 56k'er to talk, .gif are fine as long as the animation is'nt too long, using animated gif as an avatar works fine but using animated gif for a sign. is a killer for us with low bandwith.

I think animated avatars are fine, but I can see animated sigs getting annoying... especially if everyone started using em.

I 've always prefered to let common sense dictate the boards. Honestly, if it is an annoying .gif, just tell the mods and we'll do something about it. If it doesnt bother anyone, what's the problem?

I agree with reboot I think animated avatars are okay, because they are not 'in' the actual content, and are usually smaller in size (physical dimentions, and filesize)

The ones in the sigs should not be animated.. My old sig/current avatar used to be animated... but since i stopped smoking, i removed the animation. In fact, my avatar does/and will pretty much accurately reflect me :) (/me draws a bottle of whisky in his hand next)

but since there's no size/size limit on sigs currently.... they can get out of control. so i'm for the animated avatar, but non animated sig.

omega: if it would be glowing softly I'd think it would be a nice sig too - but it shimmers erratically, blinks  and tears at great speed - hence: distraction

im not really the one to talk about animated avtars as one should never throw rocks while sitting in a glass house but i find omegas sig pic extremly annoying in comparison with the others

and as for the avtars the most annoying one is the static face that daedlus uses

but thats just what i think

No, the Attack Banana is by far the most annoying.  And I'm not kidding.  I would happily watch the damn fat kid before dancing bananas.

Alright.. so far:

• 6 votes for allow ALL animation
  
• 8 votes for allowed animations with certain restrictions (mostly 'only in avatar')
  
• 3 votes for allow NO animation
  

Thus, the conclusion I draw hereby is that most of the regulars prefer animations.

Pepe's banana doesn't bother me in the least.  Tekhead's on the other hand is borderline pr0n here.  Yes, I know it's meant as a joke.  Let's just not let this whole new board thing fall into the gutter, shall we?  :rolleyes:

 I don't mind animated gifs, within reason.  If it's something that's going to lag a 56k'er, is obviously offensive, or in obviously poor taste,  then it's got to go.  Keep it small, keep the framerate low, and keep it clean and not overly visually annoying.  The blurred Omega symbol doesn't seem to bother me although others claim to find it distracting.  Personally I'd rather look at that than a monitor set to a 60Hz refresh.  The latter is like looking at a strobe light for me.  :blink:
