So I get home from work yesterday and the light is blinking.  I press the button.
(Imagine an elderly voice - older, but strong, quiet, and not shakey)

You're hearing it wrong. The message actually goes "It was 49 years ago - today - my mother died."  It's a message from the future warning you about the cataclysmic death of a person. You must act now to discover the growing threat to our world that has been set in motion, and stop it before it is too late!!!
