I was saw a story on Kotaku on one of these guys, went to his deviantart page, and started clicking related links on the right column. Pretty soon I'd found a hidden treasure trove of quality Doom art which had never come up in google image searches. Thought I'd share...

The artist's handle is at the beginning of each URL (under the image) so feel that's sufficient credit. If you want to know who did it, you can figure it out. :p

If I had to single someone out, it'd be Mechanubis' page, as he had too many Doom pieces to post all of them, and his work ranges from very faithful interpretations of Doom 3's designs, to very creative and well done reintepretations.

Not really fan art, per se.. but.. I figure some here might get the same kick out of this that I did when I first saw it a year or so ago.



A skin for Bill Rizer from Contra, made to look like Doomguy (using Contra 3 sprites as a base). Made for Super Mario Bros. Crossover. Skin is currently NOT in-game.
And if it did get included, I doubt the portrait would animate as proposed.. they're just put there because those spaces are otherwise empty. Slipgate - Smile

Credits:
Frozsoul for making the original skin and allowing me to update it
Me for updating it in numerous places
Belial the Hedgehog for the Contra 3 sprite rips

Yeah I like that one too. The artist says he was going out of his way to reference Akira, but the attention to detail in things like the armor, plasma rifle, and floor tiles take it beyond a simple parody and make it work as a sincere piece of Doom art.

Prior to broadband via cable, DSL, and fiberoptics, in order to connect computers over distance you had to use a modem that connected over the telephone line.  56k, short for 56 kbps, was the pinnacle of dial-up modem hardware.  It was the fastest a dial-up modem could work due to the nature of analog telephone lines.  Short of someone in the hills of Alabama or perhaps some countries where the broadband infrastructure isn't quite there yet, I'm not sure if anyone actually uses dial-up connections anymore.

As to the "56k warning" statement, that was a way of warning people that were still on dialup that a web page was going to cause them problems as image files took a VERY long time to load.  Gnam used it here as a kind of nod to nostalgia, though in some places in the world it may still be a valid concern.

Yeah Arne is awesome, he recently did a sort of "alternate Quake Champions cast" set of sketches and its so much more cohesive and Quake-like than what's actually in QC.
