I don't see what the point of pitting these guys against Ash is?  Besides that, if Raimi isn't directing the film it wouldn't have the Army of Darkness/Evil Dead charm to it.  It sounds to me like a situation where someone wants to toss big names around to make a quick buck from yet another mediocre film.

While I am only familiar with the story of the Evil Dead series, I don't really think adding Ash into the mix would make much sense at all.  To me, Halloween's Michael would be the most logical choice for a third protagonist.

Slipgate - Off Topic
Heh  Because of this thread, I went out to rent Freddy vs Jason.  To be honest, I can't really picture a sequel, but I enjoyed the film thoroughly.  I have not seen either of the series, but it was quite cool to see the two titans of horror duke it out.  Admittily, I enjoyed it much more than I enjoyed AvP, but I digress.

Anyhow, I do like the idea of "vs" films, but I am not one for extremely odd pairings.  A good example of an odd pairing in my eyes would be something like Batman VS Aliens.  Really bizarre things like that are best left in the comics/novels.

I hope this does good so that maybe it would garner enough interest into Ash that Raimi would consider another Evil Dead movie.

Strangest Vs I have seen would be Robocop vs Terminator vs Alien.

But thats comics for ya.

How about this one:

Michael Jackson vs. John Kerry vs. Swift Boat Veterans vs. Al-Sadr vs. George W Bush vs. Michael Moore vs. Dan Rather vs. Saddam Hussein vs. Kobe Bryant vs. Larry Flint vs. Bill O'Reilly vs. The Govenator vs. Steven Spielburg vs. Tiger Woods vs. Howard Stern vs. MoveOn.org vs. Larry King...

Oh wait, that's right...

Heh At some point in the SNES's life-time, a Robocop vs Terminator game was developed but never released.  I remember reading that it was supposed to be based on a movie as well, but I guess that never panned out.  Robocop vs Terminator is somewhat of a logical pairing, but I still can't picture that one, especially with the way Terminator 3 ended.

As for more "VS" ideas...
I think I have a good one that everybody would enjoy.

Wolfenstein 3D VS DOOM VS Quake 1 VS Quake 2 VS Quake 3

Oh wait...  Thumbs up!

It was released on SNES and Genesis. Basically you played Robocop in a side scrolling shoot fest in the present. After a few levels you get launched into the future and take on terminators ;p

"YOU ARE UNDER ARREST FOR VIOLATION OF CODE 10/1000000000. RELEASING ATOMIC BOMBS WITHOUT A LESON." - robocop

"PREPARE TO DIE COPPER" - terminators

How sickening, I pray that Raimi doesn't sell out (any more than he already has with Spider-man *gag*).  Slipgate - Shouting

I seriously doubt that the idotic teeny bopper kiddies who view, endorse and love these kinds of movies can begin to fathom the infinte greatness of Ash and the Evil Dead series.  If he were to be put up against someone it should at least be Leatherface from the (ORIGINAL) Texas Chainsaw Massacre, then we could have the privilage of seeing a chainsaw duel, assuming they wouldn't butcher it with piss-poor CGI.

As much as i love Sam Raimi ( being a huge fan of the evil dead and watching a lot of hercules the legendary journeys as a long lad ) im affraid hes already done his selling out. (spiderman) Im in a agreement with apochratha on this one ( savor it guys this may never happen again ) the young folk of today cant really appreciate the evil dead series for the classic that it is.
Id also like to state the whole "versus" thing isnt really bad in itself its just how its applied. For example "King Kong versus Godzilla" is good "Aliens versus Predator" is also a good idea ( i havent seen the movie so thats all i can say ) but Ash Vs freddy vs jason is just stupid. Personally id like to see ash vs gremlins.
