Anyone remember Lee's abortive IRC D&D game? I do. The flaming owlbears. The anime-inspired characters. The long, drawn-out, over-descriptive, extremely DETAILED descriptions. Ah the memories.
But I digress. For the past month or so, I've been running a Dungeons and Dragons character on SA, using the latest edition, version 3.5. The game is titled "Insert Coin to Continue". It's a game unlike your standard D&D, in the sense that there are no NPCs except enemies, no locations except battlegrounds, and nothing to do except fight.
The game is entirely focused on combat. Free-form roleplaying *is* possible on forums, but it takes forever and I find it hard to get into, as a player or as a DM.
Insert Coin is set up like the old-school beat 'em ups that were so popular in the late 80s, such as Double Dragon. The players face multiple waves of enemies, followed by a boss. After the boss, they level up, get some treasure, and start again.
The other focus of IC is the humor. Each player's post is typically followed by a brief monologue, usually humorous in nature. The enemies tend to be a bit absurd as well. My players on SA are currently facing a small army of explosive kobolds, much like the headless kamikazes from Serious Sam. The kobolds are currently using catapults to hurl themselves at the players.
If anyone is interested, I'd like to start up a game here, on WHS. Even if you've never played D&D before, but want to play, let me know.
The new rules for the new edition are avaliable free of charge. These core rules are known as the System Reference Document. You can find the SRD
