Still Going In Circles

« on: 2005-06-01, 23:06 »

I don't know if you know about this, but there's a new ET coming out called ET : QW (enemy territory quake wars). Here's the full press release.

"Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars? Announced

Santa Monica, CA ? May 16, 2005 ? id Software? and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today announced the development of ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS?. Developed by Splash Damage and built on id Software?s new MegaTexture? rendering technology, ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS pits the armies of Earth against the invading alien Strogg in the ultimate online strategic shooter. Featuring strategic team play, persistent character promotions, day and nighttime combat missions, and the universe?s most powerful weapons and vehicles, ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS transports players to the front lines of an epic new war for Earth.

?For years, fans have enjoyed incredible battles on the Strogg home planet; but with ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS, we?re taking players back to the war that started it all ? the Strogg invasion of Earth ? where the choice is to fight with the humans or the alien Strogg in a massive campaign for survival,? said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. ?Like all great id Software games, ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS unites bleeding-edge technology, a fantastic universe, and meticulously balanced gameplay to deliver an engrossing and futuristic gaming experience.?

?We have been so proud of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory?s? rave reviews, ?Game of the Year? awards, and massive fan-base, so to work with id again in developing ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS is an amazing opportunity.? states Paul Wedgwood, Lead Game Designer and Owner of Splash Damage Ltd. ?The stories of the Strogg invasion of Earth have always fascinated me, and now through ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS, we?re able to bring this incredible war to life with an uncompromising level of detail and realism.?

As the invasion begins, players choose to battle as one of five unique classes in either the EDF (Earth Defense Force ? humans) or the barbaric alien Strogg armies, each augmented with specialist weapons and combat hardware. Troops utilize over 40 conventional and futuristic vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems like quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to lend firepower from the air. Throughout each battle, teams establish bases, deploy defense structures, artillery, radar, and advanced forward-command systems into enemy territory while constructing and demolishing obstacles to speed progress and gain a tactical advantage over the enemy.

With realistic dynamic lighting and shadowing from headlights, searchlights and even the moon, battles can be fought during the day or night; while accurate simulation of the atmosphere, weather, and vegetation combine to create an unparalleled degree of realism. Battlefields are perfectly rendered using MegaTexture, a totally new rendering technology developed by id Software that crunches millions of polygons and a gigabyte-scale texture into a single, seamless and un-tiled landscape with unique detail down to the square inch or the un-obscured distant horizon.

Players can take on class specific missions or join a fireteam to utilize advanced command and communication options, including voice-chat and the game?s context sensitive mission order system. With bitterly contested multi-battle campaigns, each soldier fights not only for victory, but to gain valuable skills, special rewards for team-play, and persistent military promotions and medals. ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS will debut at this year?s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Activision?s booth #1224 in the South Hall."

I am looking forward to it as well, but I do hope it has some kind of single-player component even if it is something as simple as a few cutscenes here and there.

One thing I wanted to bring up with everyone else, is it just me or does the style of the armor seem reminiscent of Quake 1's albeit more reality-based?

PS: Kruzader, could you possibly resize the picture or link to it?  It's throwing the whole thread off text-wise.

I'm cautiously curious about it.  Most of what's in the screenshot looks pretty plain and modern-ish, the uniforms, guns, and tanks especially, and the flying vehicle looks suspiciously like an AH-65 Apache.  It is only one screenshot, and I certainly want to see more Q2-ish stuff, like hyperblasters and BFG's and Strogg gunners, etc.

hopefully it will bridge the gap between quake 1 and 2

showing us the early strogg war, with prototype hyperblasters, bfgs and railguns

and yes the heli in the background definately looks like a AH-65 apache

I think it's going to be a store game, not a download game.

Basic plotline for ET:QW is the initial strogg invasion of earth; so we should expect to see lots of semi-modern stuff, and early strogg models; should be fun.

I suppose this breaks from the "Id History" we're using, sort of bypassing the whole Doom and Quake 1 eras then?

It looks like an injection, so to speak, at the head of the Q2 universe (the one with the most canonical reference).

I'm not sure the pre-Q3 storylines were intended to coexist at all; it's just been fun merging them.

At any rate, this would be placed firmly several months before the events of Q2.  As for the more current-day look, well, how do our astronauts look compared to our marines?

(The Apache seems to be VTOL-based, incidentally.)

Er... all helicopters are VTOL by nature.  Doom - Huh?

Hmm... true, we have no idea how long after the initial Strogg invasion that Operation Alien Overlord actually took place.

I get the feeling that part of the reason Earth's forces were so overwhelmed in the initial Strogg invasion is because they were horribly unprepared -- if they were stuck somewhere in between the "dark ages" of Quake 1 and what we see in Quake 2, then they would have been considerably screwed, especially if the Strogg hit during some kind of technological transitional period. If this is the case, then it would explain why things look rather "modern" in QWars -- the UAC simply ramped up research and development in the time between the Strogg attack and Operation: Alien Overlord, resulting in the weaponry, transporation, and armor we see in Q2 (and may explain why they used apparent prototypes rather than entirely new weaponry in the cases of the Hyperblaster and BFG10K).

True. Q1 looked like a really bad earth's epoch, not only because of the enemies that are clearly medieval-like, but also because the weaponry was VERY rude. It looked like UAC went back years of research! So yeah, the weaponry was still in development stages. UAC was completely caught in surprise by the Stroggs. Fortunatly, Humans grew very quickly in terms of population, maybye because of the fact that in DooM II, Earth's population wasn't completely exterminated, instead of that it was eprisioned by Hell's forces and later freed by Flynn. In fact, that part of DooM II is very fascinating, because with Earth's population free, maybye they fought against the remaining forces in the surface of Earth, while Flynn goes inside Hell and kill Goat-head. I think that Earth was caught in a bad time in Quake 1, otherwise they wouldn't have that weaponry. I think that they got more time to grow & develop between Q1 & the Strogg invasion than between DooM & Q1 but it still wasn't enough, as they were completing the new weaponry, the Q2 weaponry. At least Earth got enough time to make vehicles. This is my POV.

One thing that amazes me is the fact that the Stroggs could have been killed if they had just nuked the planet in Quake II.

Looks the business, though I hope that id don't break the habit of a lifetime and make it subscription-based.

You guys are assuming dat because id has its own chronology when it comes to the games and their release date they have to have a continuity when there is not one.

Quake 1 does not necessarily take place after Quake 2 and so on, remembre that you play as ranger in Quake 1 and you use the slipgates to travel to Quake dimension in order to defeat him after your base was overwhelmed with grunts and enforcers and they ended up destroying everything and leaving you with the only choice to jump to the only slipgate in a desperate attempt to survive.

In the 2 expansions at least one, you`ll get to play as Wrack, but you never defeated Quake himself, so there is no UAC involved in the quake series, there is no medieval earth, its just Quake dimension and the effort you`ll do to kick his ass durign the game, so the plot of Quake 2, as far as i can tell could be very next to Doom 3`s , and the initial attack of the strogg that lasted years, its what quake wars is all about, and its what we will be playing online, as the story unfolds, the strogg technology that was captured by humans, later on will allow  the production of cybrons, and cybronic implants dat we see in some characters of quake 3.

So there ya go... and at the end of it all well see Hell On Earth....
