Of course that 1GB of RAM would help, but that video card... you should change it if you have the chance to do so.

Death stalker, the only way you will be able to run Doom 3 smoother is to do an auto detect in your options. If you raise the bar higher then the auto detect recommendation, you will for surebe dropping frames and all that jazz. My auto detect sets it on high at 800x600, but that is because I have a 2800+ athlon, 2gb RAM DDR2, and a 128mb radeon 9800 pro. The biggest resource consumer in Doom 3 is surprisingly, memory. I had a problem with FPS like you, then I got another gig stick, and it solved all problems.

Oh my... if I do an auto detect it puts it at the lowest possible settings. It just looks like crap. So if it's RAM then upgrading to a Gig should help abit. The upgrades for both my RAM and video card cost about the same. And that's expensive to say the least. IMO RAM might be the best bet for an upgrade(most useful) but as far as I know my Radeon x300 is a piece of crap anyway. So it's a toss up. Not really sure which would be more beneficial. Any suggestions? Doom - Huh?  I wanna do both but I've gotta be realistic.

Well if you can RUN doom 3 with your video card, then your best bet is getting a juicier RAM stick.

Exactly. The best option here would be the RAM. Then you'll be able to run D3 at a stable Framerate.

anyone with a 900 mhz processor, 512 RAM, and a decent 64mb video card, can run Doom 3 at low quality.
I'm not doubting that, but I have a 1.4 Ghz processor, 512 PC2100 DDR RAM, and a 64 MB Geforce 2 MX video card, and I can run DOOM 3 at 15 FPS at most with all of the lowest settings enabled.  My average framerate is 8 FPS.  The biggest problem for me with DOOM isn't really the number of monsters the game throws at me, but rather the complexity of the maps in combination to all the particle effects that are generated when a fireball is thrown.  Perhaps there are people more tolerant than I, but anything below 5 FPS becomes near physically impossible to play.

Once you have played W : ET at 15 FPS and HL2 at 5-10 FPS, you can take on anything. It's just a matter of getting used to the speed, at least it was to me.

Back to the mod, though... what disappointed me was the level redesigns.  I didn't ask for more puzzles in my Quake2.

After the third instance of new red lasers blocking the path I know I should be able to take, I quit.

Pretty art, and pretty fun (though the enemies seem to take way too much damage before dying), but the level design irked me.

I heard the level designs are really bad for hardcore Quake 2 fans, I wouldn't know, because I've never played Quake 2 in my life.  I was too busy playing Evercrack and other various RPGs at the time.
I'll give it a try though.

Thanks for the advice folks. Slipgate - Grin  Think I'll go with RAM. As for the Mod maybe after classes I'll D/L it. Been ify on it cause some say it'll mess up your install and some say it's not worth it. I'll give it a go, but that's a big download for it to suck <_< .
