Environmental breakdown is possible of course...but this seems a bit hasty to me.

The current cause of major climate disruption is (surprise) the sun.  Solar activity was supposed to peak in 2001 due to an 11 year solar maximum.  Well, guess what?  It never stopped peaking.  Solar activity is abnormally high right now, and the sun - not man - drives the Earth's climate.  Human activity affects it, but automobiles are not going to melt the polar ice caps and flood the planet in some Waterworld "doomsday" scenario.  The only reason I can figure these people in the pentagon would be freaking out is either they've found some evidence of a coming extra-planetary disaster that nobody knows about (like an asteroid or alien invasion, what have you), they've found out irrefutable evidence of some coming divine judgement against man, or they've got a few agenst sniffing too much glue.  I think the last option is the most feasible explanation.  How about you?

considering that we've got a cokehead running the country... *cough*... I'd go with the last option too.

Not any worse than "But I didn't inhale!" and "That depends on what your definition of 'is' is"...
