Solution:  Turn off the TV.  Read more books.  Get off the dope.  Parents stay married and do your flipping job and take care of your offspring.  Oh yes, let's see, how about real alternatives to public education since it's a dismal failure?  And don't anyone tell me the teachers need more pay as an incentive, they've been throwing money at this problem for decades and it's only getting worse, not better.

As long as mediocrity is acceptible, people have no impetus to excell.

continuing in this vein.

Amusingly enough, the same has occurred to conservative staff, and their course materials were considered to be under fair use as the faculty were "public figures."

Isn't it funny how that works?  But then, rules can be applied selectively when one does not believe in absolutes.  We can't have anything like consistency in application interfere with our agenda.  After all, it's "for the greater good".  And remember, if you're ever feeling pinned by rules, don't let them get in your way, just think of them more like "guidelines".  It's easier than backing up your position with facts and logic.  Most people are too dumb - er, "intellectually challenged" to understand that sort of thing anyway.  Oh yes, and don't forget, laws are put there by those who are intellectually superior in order to help guide the masses who obviously can't make decisions for themselves.  Just smile a lot, say things people like to hear, and put on a good face for the sheep we're herding.  They'll love us for it![/End dripping sarcasm]

Seriously.  Just look at Judge Alito, and what they did to him in the Senate hearings.  When a liberal president was in office, the conservatives approved his judicial appointments without a fuss, yet take the model of what a judge should be - almost completely impartial with a perfect understanding of the constitutional role of judges - and from what I've seen exactly the kind of person you'd want on the US Supreme Court, and you'd expect Pontius Pilate to be using the sink in the next room.  Why?  Some people believe that following the rules is more important than getting their way, and others believe getting their way is more important than following the rules.  Universities are no different.  You have faculty who believe they must influence young minds to think a certain way, and this above all else is what is important to them.  It's one thing to teach a person how to think.  That's what a university should do.  It should not engage in trying to teach them what to think, especially when it comes to political concerns.  That's indoctrination, and the college becomes nothing but a propaganda machine at that point.

Seeing that university educations are so desirable in the private sector, and the private sector has a severe impact on the public as a whole, and also seeing that many universities receive federal grant money, I believe open accountability, independent peer review, and transparency should be mandatory for universities so that people know what the hell they're paying for before they set foot on campus, and so that the public at large knows what kind of educations the universities are churning out.

universites have become an industry, heaven forbid someone without a degree might be able to do the job just as well, probably better but most companies still hire the guy that probably cant even do his job simply because he has a stupid peice of paper that "says" he "passed"(used very loosely as there are many ways to "pass" in schools these days) a class on whatever he is applying for.. just judging by the fact that companies contract so much IT work these days, that its slightly saddening to think that maybe the reason they dont have any inhouse IT anymore is because it cheaper to just weed the bad ones out by hiring them on a per-diem basis and not allowing the ones that suck to do any work after doing a crappy job. theres nothing more i hate then going to a job site to clean up after the previous idiot couldnt figure out that a hardrive was simply unplugged.. *sigh*

Still Going In Circles

Politics turned, in the last century, into a merchandising machine, only thinking about themselves and their money. And, as all merchandising companies, they have to make propaganda for them to "earn" (get) some money. And it is so easy and cheap to make propaganda! Everyone, after watching a commercial more than 3 times WILL memorize that commercial in their heads & when that happens, they will talk about the commercial with other people, making that person also memorize the same commercial, and so on. Same thing here: A person hears about a certain type of politics, comments with other people, they also memorize, and so on. A very effective method of brainwashing. So, the teachers here can be one of two things: the brainwashed product or the merchandising technician, and the obvious answer is both. So what will the teacher do? He'll discuss "his" point of view with the students, and the same thing goes on.

An infinite loop that will never end.

I never went to college, I smoke the odd bowl and I can do all this stuff.  I'm a socialist by choice, not cos some pasty old fart with degrees coming out of his arse says I should be (none ever have). Hell, I can take a PC apart and put it back together. All that is missing is that little piece of paper ...

In a sentence? This is the height of sadness.

I saw a similar article in the local news paper here in New York. They gave a graph that I had to step back and go DAMN. It's amazing how many folks are getting into collage with literacy levels like that. Granted my grammar and spelling aren't the best in the state but to think someone with less skill with it that myself will become a lawyer or doctor someday. /shudders
