Vets have operated on a dog who had become sick after swallowing 28 golf balls.

German shepherd Libby had been coughing up blood after weeks of fetching golf balls at the course where owner Mike Wardrop works.
That's one crazy dog!

Hehe ... this isn't the 1st time this has happened. I've seen shows on Animal Planet before where they've had to surgically remove a ton of golf balls from a lab before. It's amazing what animals sometimes end up ingesting. Such as the iguana who ate over a dollar's worth of coins. HA !

But WHY would a dog eat any golf balls?

Do they smell like food?

Why did it not choke on one?

Well, if you think about it ... dogs in general, especially before days of domestication, would often eat huge pieces of meat w/o chewing in order to get enough to eat. Dogs and humans aren't exactly the same in that aspect. Just b/c humans can't swallow golfballs (altho, I'm sure there's a couple that possibly could do it) doesn't mean that dogs can't. As humans, we're more dependent on chewing our food 1st before swallowing. That's not exactly the case w/ dogs. Slipgate - Smile

Dogs, especially labs, aren't the smartest of critters.  LOL!  They are great at eating things they shouldn't.  I've seen x-rays of a great dane that had eaten a small statue of Micky Mouse that had been stuck in his stomach for almost 2 years.  *shakes her head*  At least the dog wasn't obstructed.  That's baaaaaaaad.
