Users who reformat their hard drive and perform a clean installation of the operating system will find that they need to reactivate the product. But, as long as the new installation is on the same system and there won't be any hardware changes it is possible to transfer the existing product activation and skip having to go through the product activation process again.

Before anyone asks - no, it won't let you pirate XP onto another system.

I knew this. What I've done is activated the product, then used norton ghost 2003 to make back up images :  1 with just XP and 1 with office, psp7 and other things, and 1 with all on, inc generations and ut etc.

I keep these images on my second hard drive, and also on CD and another copy on DVD, being very paranoid.

I have also copied the relevant files as used in the article, mind.

over the years I must have used about 50 CDs to make images for my comps.

Mind, there is another way to 'activate' , but I can't talk about it here.

I've activated the same key on many computers.
simply call microsoft and get a confirmation number.
They ask you "is this number on another PC?" you say no.

they keep a list of the numbers and if a number is used 8 times or more , they delete the key so you cant install it on a new pc .
