That's because Windows Explorer is just a shell browser application.  Crashing Windows Explorer does not crash the system any more than crashing Internet Explorer would crash the internet.  It's the kernel you don't want to crash.  It's possible for Windows Explorer to crash the kernel, but it's just not as easy to do as it was with Windows 98, which liked to crash at the drop of a hat, and Windows ME, which crashed at the drop of ANY hat.

I don't think you can do it for 2000 or XP, but I know for Windows 98 you could actually use the old File Manager system and turn off the Windows Explorer interface.  It was a system option that was pretty deeply buried.  Remember that up until 2K, Windows was entirely a shell app on top of DOS.  Some of that structure is still present even if DOS is no longer the underlying OS.

The old split OS/Shell hierarchy is still present in Linux though.  You can use the same copy of Linux and use several different shells to access the same OS.  There's the Bash shell (command line), and the KDE and Gnome desktops, to name a few more common ones.

Ah, I forgot about dosbox (i use it to play blood sometimes),but I run xp and vista on my computer, so i just have to restart and put start under earlier version of windows, and I'm good.
