Hi,

I'm just wondering, has Generations been downloaded more often recently? Because I ended up sticking a trailer in youtube and doing my best to get it some hits. And it's kind of worked. A month later and it's already got 1,226 views.

Ehrm. That's nice, but didn't I explicitly state that I did not want team-created material to be published, distributed or otherwise internet-ized by others, under another author's name (unless express permission given)? That exact video has been sitting on youtube, with proper links and myself as the author. Now suddenly the movie is released by someone named "gtavigilante", and is presented as though Generations is a competitor of Halo 3 -- neither of which makes any sense.

If you or anyone else non-Wirehead wants to promote Generations, that is fine, but use your own material or ask our permission, first. You can easily record kick-ass Generations demos and turn them into avi's. We're fine with people uploading those to youtube and whatnot.

I asked about it here, and no-one seemed to mind:

http://forums.wireheadstudios.org/index.php?topic=3535.0

Also Phoenix has already seen that, and he didn't seem to mind either. And it says in the video info that I didn't make the video, I just like Generations. Also I just put that stuff about Halo 3 in the video name to get it more views. Do a search for Halo 3 and a search for Quake 3 and the former will get you videos with literally millions more hits.

Anyway I'm not trying to cause trouble if you want it taken down it's no problem.

No need for anything so radical -- I'm just commenting to avoid further instances in the future.

Just to resolve any misunderstandings for future reference:
We're cool with pretty much any kind of informal/unofficial promotion of the mod (we even heartily welcome it, ofcourse). If you've made it, recorded it, drawn it, written it -- feel free to upload it pretty much anywhere.
We're uncool with non-Wirehead originating formal/official promotion or use of promotional material. If we've made it, asking and getting explicit permission is the default way to go about it, at least afaic.

I think I missed seeing your reply to the topic.  I sometimes get sidetracked and busy and miss a post once in a while.  Never assume silence on my part to be an answer!  I'm the loudest mouth on the board (check my post count) and I will *always* reply yes or no if asked a question - provided I see the question.  I'd prefer to be nagged about something as opposed to someone making an assumption and causing a misunderstanding.  PM me, double post, email me, whatever.  I'll always answer.

I must agree with Tabun that any team-generated video content remain posted by us.  Something you may not be aware of is that we've had a serious problem in the past with people using our models and textures in their own projects without asking.  That's caused a great amount of strife, especially when we have to contact the person involved, notify them that what they're doing is against our wishes and to desist.  It's bad for us because our media is exposed in an environment in which it's not intended, and in a state in which we have no control over, such as unanimated guns or placeholder textures, etc.  It's bad for the person using our media as well because, instead of going into their project with the understanding that they'll have to be making models and textures, they went in thinking they could just use something someone else already made without any problems, and it puts them back to square one.  It's a lose-lose situation we don't like to see.  The number of times this has happened has made us a little protective of content as a result.

Since the video is already up, my primary gripe is the title.  If there's a way to change that so that it does not imply a connection to Halo 3, can that be done?  Again, I am unfamiliar with how Youtube's posting process works, so if the title can be changed to something like "Doom and Quake weapons in Quake 3!" that would be more appropriate.  Also, put a blurb in the test that the video is copyright Wirehead Studios, and a link to Tab's original video posting.  If that's acceptable to Tabun I could live with that.  If the title can't be changed...  well, it's already up and it is generating some interest from the looks of it.

I'll change the title if you want but first hear me out.

About people going to see the video expecting to see a Halo video- it doesn't say anywhere in the video that it's a Halo video. It says "Halo 3 owned by Doom weapons in Quake 3" which implies that the video is a demonstration that Halo 3 is not as good as being able to use the Doom weapons in Quake 3. Considering how many people play Halo 3, I thought this is quite an important point for people to know about.

But on the other hand I suppose it is misleading, because people looking for Halo 3 might get to the video that way. That said, they wouldn't if they read the title/ info properly. And if someone does click on it and is disappointed because they wanted to see a Halo video (and they were so eager to do that they couldn't be bothered to read the title/ info first), then that disappointment is hardly going to kill them is it?

Ultimately I think the overall pleasure people will get from hearing about Generations via the increased publicity this method gets outweighs the suffering caused by misleading people into thinking they're going to see a Halo video. Look at the comments. Sure one guy asks why is Halo in the title but most are thrilled to discover Generations exists- and they wouldn't know if they hadn't seen the video.

I understand the pragmatic stance, but I can't help but compare it to use adding  meta-tag descriptions in our website along the lines of "viagra, boobs, free lunch, cheat-codes, microsoft" -- etc --, just to get more hits. I'm all for spreading the word, but I do believe there is such a thing as "bad publicity", particularly in the kind of communities we (like to) operate in.

So what are the download statistics like recently? Any more in the last month or so? I really think youtube trailers are a good way to advertise Generations- I'd make some myself but I don't have the necessary software or well, the stuff in version 1 that should be shown off..

Phoenix with this I just meant a rough idea of whether more people are downloading it now, if that's possible. Actually looking at the trailer in my youtube account, in the last month it's got like another 1200 hits. It's nearly had 2500 total now. Seems like that should be reflected in the number of downloads/ page views for the Generations homepage.
