While we are at, I've seen many fan games/remakes based off original games, one example could be Hexen Edge of Chaos.

Unfortunately, it requires Doom 3 full in order to be played in mods list menu. Banging Head against Wall

The Doom 3 engine seems like it would have been perfect for just that. Alas, it was not to be.

I thought the same thing.  Doom 3 had to offer just what Q1 needs:  Shadows, darkness, creepy ambience... the engine was perfect for a Q1 remake.

Shambler's Castle is pretty impressive. I remember playing it quite a while back. It certainly shows what a new Quake could be like. However, I didn't feel that the level design was what I'd want from Quake. Not a lot of traps or clever secrets.
