For those who don't know, I will be running the Gen tournament at qcon. I need your suggestions about the tournament. What kind of things would you like changed? What kind of things would you like added? Any other comments/suggestions would be great!

Anyways ... I didn't really see much of what went on last year w/ the tourney so I can't really say. Your best bet would probly be to talk to dic. *shrug*

Dicion handled the tourney last year, so he can provide the ladder information, etc.  Each year we've had some prizes to give out.  2002 it was a Koolance water cooling system, last year it was a most awesome Wirehead case wrap.  We'll need to think of some nifty swag for this year too.

I have the format for last year's tourney, but I just want input on whether you liked it and what not.

Allright, here's my rough draft of the gen qcon tourney - lemme know what you guys think

Generations Tournament @ Qcon2004
-------------------------------------------------

I'm not clear on how to divide up brackets based on the # of people, but I think this tourney setup will be competitive and good ol' fashioned fraggin' fun.

Note: g_spawnprotect needs to be at 0 or 1

1st round: 8-player FFA
 - All classes open
 - 40 fraglimit, 15 timelimit
 - top 4 scorers advance into the next round

2nd round: 5-player Random FFA
 - Random class ONLY
 - 30 fraglimit, 15 timelimit
 - top 2 scorers advance into the next round

3rd round: 4v4 TDM
 - Arena class DISABLED
 - 50 fraglimit, 20 timelimit
 - top scorer from both teams advance into semifinals

4th round: Doomed Wildcard FFA
 - Doom class ONLY
 - Losers from the TDM round playoff for a 2nd chance
 - 50 fraglimit, 15 timelimit
 - top 2 scorers advance into semifinals

5th round: Semi-final Elimination 4-player FFA
(Optional if there are too many people)
 - Arena class DISABLED
 - 25 fraglimit, 15 timelimit
 - top scorer advances into finals

6th round: 1v1 Finals
 - All classes open
 - 10 fraglimit, 10 timelimit
 - Continue 1v1 matches until there is a winner

-------------------
Maps:

1st round: Stormatorium / The Edge Revisited
2nd round: H2SO4 / Blood Run
3rd round: Iron Yard, The Abandoned Place
4th round: Sever the Sphinx / A Fist Full of Steel
5th round: The Bad Place v2
6th round: Eternal Arenas, Scrap Metal ][, (WE NEED MORE 1V1 MAPS!)

I've got a dumb question.Do you have to go to Qcon to play in the tourney or will it be on the regular servers? If not on the servers will anybody get demos so I can atleast see what happens, and who wins?Sorry for the dumb question.

I'm positive that this tourney will be a qcon-only thing =]

As far as demos go, I think that we'll push players to record demos as much as possible PLUS a floating-spec cam if we can arrange it. Demos will be taken - no worries =]

Spawn protection should be off for this, it is fine on the pub servers, but being tourny...its ultimately going to cause some issues....

First round needs to be random class though...keeps class hogging whores at bay...
Second round should be open class...really...this is where the weeding out of the weaker players wil take place...

ReQ2DM3 is great for 1on1, provided quad & invul are disabled for that. That's old-school Quake2 1on1 for ya ;]

Draft looks good to me!
The only thing I'm having a brow-raiser on is the TDM round. Then again, the Doom Wildcard as a losers-round makes up for any oddities..
Too bad I can't join! Oh wait, I couldn't anyway ;]

I'll argue that we should have an open-class round first then the forced-random class round second.

Having this tournament open to everyone, we should let players play how they're used to playing in Gen before starting to crack down on specific class limitations. This way we get the most talented and qualified players in the later rounds (in theory). The first round is intended to filter out the scrubs from the tournament. Also, the final rounds are open-class, just like a regular game of gen. I say let the people play gen, then throw them through the themed tournament, spitting out the best all-around gen players for the finals.

I think that throwing a team game mode into what amounts to an every man for himself tourney is a baaad idea.

Restricting the rounds by class is a good one though. I'd honestly start with a large FFA round to weed out the stragglers, then proceed by small FFAs restricted by class, ending in the 1on1 round..

Why is it a bad idea? Straight 1v1 and FFA DM can get really dull, so mixing up the game types gives the tournament a unique edge. In the end, the best fraggers make it through to the finals, so the structure of the tournament does its job.

Not necessarily true. If a good player ends up with a sorry team, he could easily be put out of the running. This is why it's bad to put a team-based match in a tourney with a single winner.
