"A bill encouraging women and girls to go topless at California beaches and parks could be introduced this week in the California Legislature," a conservative group is warning.
This is absurd. I am appauled they would try to pass a bill to encourage this. As if women are treated as sex objects enough as it is, this is only going to make things worse.

I wonder why the gov't is pumping money, effort and time into something like that. It's like promoting the use of the color blue in plastic duck-shaped products...

really lets not pretend topless women on beaches are going to have this amazing erotic effect and turn women into sex objects ( at least more than they are now ) for the most part its just going to mean seeing old women topless on the beach resulting in alot less men going to the beach.

As the Los Angeles Times recently reported, a lawyer's group is pressing for a "topless sunbathing" bill at the request of a female attorney who insists that it is sex discrimination to allow men, but not women, to go topless in public.

"At some point, men's breasts became liberated and women's didn't," the Los Angeles Times quoted Liana Johnsson as saying. "This is the only thing left that men are legally allowed to do and, for women, they have to register as a sex offender. The real issue is there should be equal protection under the law," Johnsson told the newspaper.
Emphasis mine. I've never fully understood why men are allowed topless in public, but women are not. Popular culture aside, it just doesn't make sense to me. Men have breasts, too, even if they don't ever serve a real purpose.

Because men stare at women's breasts in a sexual manner, and female mammary glands serve a purpose in the reproductive process whereas males' do not.  The entire purpose of men being attacted to female breasts has to do with mate selection, since healthy breasts mean healthy offspring, which is why it triggers arousal.  It's biology, plain and simple.  That's the whole problem, men are easily distracted by sexualy arousing imagery, otherwise porn wouldn't be so popular.  Let me ask you this, if a woman flashed her chest near a busy highway and someone up ahead had to slam on the brakes how many cars do you think would pileup from the rubberneckers?  It's just common sense.

The question is, though, how much of of men's staring at women's breasts "in a sexual manner" is biological, and how much is ingrained in the heads of most men because of popular culture?

To be honest, I'm dead positive that a good deal of the facination that men have with naked breasts is entirely because society has dictated that women must cover them in public. Naked breasts have become taboo. It's no different than tobacco to many people who are under 18, alcohol to someone under 21, and any illegal substance to some people (obviously using the United States an an example, here) -- it's "not allowed," so they rebel and are abnormally attracted to it.

If you did that it wouldn't be exciting.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal in Denmark (I've seen it and no one seemed bothered by it) and I haven't heard one single incident of "b00bs cause trafic chaos"

Some women choose to "flash" their breasts other do not I'm pretty convinced that's all there is to it.

I think having a law against it is limiting freedom too much, but that might just be me...

We animals also tend to have natural "clothing" that protects us from the elements.  Humans do not, hence clothes.  Personally I think humans are quite ugly without clothing, so I'd prefer you stay modest and keep your pants and shirts on.  I promise not to strut around with all my feathers plucked as well.   Slipgate - Smile

Reading you guy's responses you neglect to mention the fact of the actions of this bill on how it effects the kids of this generation. I mean little kids seeing topless/naked adults on the beaches? Leave that for porn shops so only ADULTS can see the content. I wouldn't want my kids girl or boy to see topless/naked people on a beach. I mean what does that teach them? It teaches them its okay to do shit like that.  I mean why bother being naked/topless in the first place? If your so desperate then strip down inside your house and streak 24hr........or jump in the shower. But by god people what does striping in public show about our society? Not only is it lude but it degrades our society even lower than it already is. Why is that? Well not to get on a relgious subject, but in my opinion, the begining of the bible in Genesis when Adam and Eve eat the fruit and are knowledgeable of being naked they immeditately try to dress with something. Even if you're not religious isn't that message good enough to show some meaning as to how we should act?

Oh, so those *heathens* in Africa are doing lude and obscene acts?

BTW, does it specify which parts of the body must be covered in the bible? No, I don't think so...

Wierd bill.  On one hand, you'd have teenage boys with horribly constraining bathing suits, on the other hand, many women could work on their "tan line."  The only safety concern I would have is that shit bites you in the ocean (namely sea lice,) and you'd be an easier target.

Added:

Humor aside, I thought about other implications of the bill...

To be honest, I can only see the bill attracting more tourism to California.  The downside to that would be what kind of tourists are you attracing?  I don't agree with the statistics, but it's been proven that strip clubs attract a criminal element, especially in sub-urban areas.  Personally, I have seen no evidence of this myself, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

One of the Florida keys, Key West, actually does allow nudity to extent.  While vacationing there, I remember seeing several hotels which encouraged swimming topless (including the one I stayed at,) and I think there are a few nudist colonies there as well.  I can't remember whether or not the public beaches allowed it though.  I do remember my family and I having to pay to enter a beach so maybe they do.  *Shrugs*  The point I'm getting at is that I didn't see a single female topless or naked while I was there, so I honestly don't think the bill would sway many women to go prancing about topless if it did pass.

There is nothing wrong with nudity in my mind.  Hell, if everybody were naked, I'd feel much better about my own body, but then again, I'd hate walking barefoot everywhere or having no clothes to keep me warm on very cold days and nights.   Morality and deceny issues aside, there are good reasons to keep your pants on. Slipgate - Wink  Besides, I'm not too sure how comfortable  women would be around me while I'm noticably aroused by their beauty.  Slipgate - Smile~

Honestly I think while this bill won't see the light of day let alone pass, I think it is a step in the "right direction" for America.

Now here me out before you jump to any conclusions that all I want to do is go to Cali and see half naked women. If I really wanted just that I would look them up online or just look to my bed and my fiancee laying there.

America is the most "censored" culture in america, and I feel it hurts us. All this "touchy feely" protect the kids shit has got to go.  It doesn't truly prepare us for the real world in my opinion.  Now I'm not saying that allowing breasts to go free in cali is the solution, but it is a step.  An "uncensorship" law if you will, in this day and age where everything has to be so PC in America for fear of suit or conviction.

Just look at what happened after last years superbowl, all the censorship laws and regulations that came to pass because of that.

Doom - Huh?

Again, it's not so much censorship as it is public opinion. I don't mind seeing nekkid boobies, but there are plenty of nekkid boobies I dun wanna see. *shudder* I, of course, live in wisconsin.

So the question isn't "should boobies be free" but "should free boobies be seen in public."

Which boils down to what a given culture thinks is acceptible in public.

This is even more an issue than the bit about public TV.

"If you don't like it, change the channel." Doesn't work in real life.
If I look outside and see something that offends me, am I supposed to ignore it? I think not.

If I were in cali, and a beautiful woman walked by without a top on; I'd be relatively unaffected. "woah, hey, hot chick with a nice rack." Appreciate, and move on to whatever I'm doing. This, of course, would be spoiled by the cat-calling asshats that think they're at a strip joint all of a sudden. Say hello to 90% of the male college crowd. It's not the boobies that I find offensive, it's the drooling morons that will result from it.
