As to "old-skool" mode - I see it as most useful in cases where a game is restricted to one class only. In those situations, balance issues go out the door.
I agree that "oldskool" might get old quickly on non-class restricted servers, but when I'm playing Slippy CTF, I want my playing experience to be as close to classic QWCTF as possible.
I hope someone manages to improve the Q1 rocket/grenade explosion sounds. The incredibly loud BOOM of Q1 rockets exploding is something I've missed in every Quake game since then - Q2 and Q3 rockets sound wimpy in comparison.
