I'm surprised this wasn't brought up (or perhaps it was and I missed it).

Apparently it was held up a bit by the stencil buffer shadow implementation (Carmack's Reverse), so Carmack had to alter the code slightly to get around the legal bs.

I wonder if anyone will try to completely remove the fps cap in it.

I downloaded the source when it became available, but I didn't post about it.  I haven't looked at it yet.  I figured I would let the more eager Doom 3 modders take a crack at it and see what they come up with.  Doomed

This was posting about Id's plans to release the code, not that they had actually done it.  Technically minor difference, but it confirms that my memory is not completely shot at least.  Doom - Thumbs Up!
